The Wonder Years

If The Wonder Years were to come out now, it would take place in 2006.
Dan Lauria, who played Jack Arnold, was 41. Alley Mills, who played Norma Arnold, was 37.

I just rewatched the entire series last year. Really weird experience remembering relating to Kevin when I watched as a kid, and relating now to Jack...especially being the same age as Jack. Really gives you an appreciation for the journey of life and one's own maturation.

The intro music on streaming is awful! It’s not Joe Cocker’s version. Great show still.
thejunkmanadv@reddit
Much of the music was re-tooled/removed or changed for streaming and the early DVD releases because of licensing issues. Similar thing with 90210, Daria, and others. It changes the "art" as the sound design, in this case the music, is an integral part of the feeling and communication the scenes are supposed to convey.
Fortunately there are fan made "restorations" that put it all back (mostly) the way it was when it first aired. Problem is you need to sail the high seas and use an appropriate internet condom.
todreamofspace@reddit
I don’t rewatch old shows that rely heavily on the original music to connect themes and scenes. Absolutely ruined Skins, Dawson’s Creek, etc.
pct2daxtreme@reddit
I always thought the theme from “Life Goes On” would work for this show.
nakedpilsna@reddit
Corky took that one I think
ipsumdeiamoamasamat@reddit
Corky’s sister was cute. Ten-year-old me had a small thing.
certified_anus_beef@reddit
A cover song of a cover song.
Those older shows are a mess when it comes to streaming rights due to having to license all of the music.
IanDetroit@reddit
Why did they include Marilyn Manson in this photo?
zealot_ratio@reddit
it was a picture of Beautiful People.
dadjokes502@reddit
I still to this day don’t like Wayne
zealot_ratio@reddit
Hamster patrol
_NoleFan6@reddit
Wayne sucks 🤣
Othersideofbroad@reddit
That moment when he gave his shirt to the friend suffering from PTSD was really something, though. Showed he was a lot more than just the older brother who messed with his little brother all the time.
zealot_ratio@reddit
I still have a crush on Winnie.
faulternative@reddit
Damn, Olivia D'Abo was one of my earliest crushes 😍
Fantastic-Bid-4265@reddit
that's Marilyn Manson on the left.
VVrayth@reddit
I love that this never doesn't come up.
Metamorphica_0226@reddit
Me and my inner monologue on a random Thursday afternoon for no reason whatsoever: Paul from the Wonder Years is not actually Marilyn Manson…. We’re all stars now… In the dope show
magster823@reddit
I'm seeing Paul Pfeiffer open for Rob Zombie in Sep.
Bluffwatcher@reddit
I thought it was Milhouse.
External-Praline-451@reddit
I'm in the UK and this was solid gossip for us too. I love pre-Internet viral moments 😂
paf0@reddit
I know that's not true but I think it every time I see that photo. I feel bad for that guy but it's a hilarious urban legend.
Hot-Sauce-P-Hole@reddit (OP)
And Jamie from Small Wonder was played by Billy Corgan, who purchased Marilyn Manson's removed ribs to be used as drum sticks during the recording of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
ILustForVolcan0@reddit
Ribs removed around this time, I think

There’s an episode where Kevin goes to work with his dad, only to see him get shit on by clients and his boss. He realizes that the dreams and aspirations his dad had were set aside for his family. His dad would go out with his telescope frequently and look at the stars. You didn’t really see a change in the relationship on the show, but the voiceover implies that it did after that.
Steven_G_Photos@reddit
That was such an amazing episode, it's one of the few that I really remember having an impact on me watching as a kid. It pulled the curtain back to reveal parts of the working world that no one had ever talked to me about, and I found to really have deep truth in it as I got my first few jobs.
Enge712@reddit
The Dad seemed like such a jerk as a kid and is much more understandable now.
Hossflex@reddit
One of my favorite moments is when Kevin does backbreaking chores from sun up to sundown only for his allowance. When it’s time to pay, the sound of a rusty metal door is played while Jack slowly opens his wallet to hand out $2.
aenflex@reddit
Plus he’s super hot
cptjaydvm@reddit
The dad is my favorite character on the show. As a dad myself now I really identify with his struggles.
Aggravating-Try1222@reddit
I was always reluctant to watch this show because the dad scared me.
IDigRollinRockBeer@reddit
Scared Kevin and Wayne too
thematrixhasyoum8@reddit
Yeah i remember watching it as a kid and thinking he didnt love Kevin
_NoleFan6@reddit
I watched some original run episodes as a kid, but it re ran on Nick at Nite during my HS years... I had soooo many crushes from this show!
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I caught the nick at nite repeats!
Chi_Nap_King@reddit
I remember I hated that Kevin and Winnie didn't end up together in the final episode
LumpyJump6091@reddit
As an adult, I like that. How many of us realistically end up with our childhood sweethearts?
bigdirkmalone@reddit
I hated the later years when Kevin was a teen and a dick
Othersideofbroad@reddit
Here's the secret: Kevin was always a dick.
Intelligent-Invite79@reddit
It wasn’t until a rewatch a few years ago that I realized what a horrible friend and son he is in the show.
RedBeardedMex@reddit
Just like the show "Friends", despite it being on prime time growing up I never watched it. I simply didn't find it interesting.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
One of my favorite shows, gotta find out if it's streaming
BohemiaDrinker@reddit
Marylin Manson was cute as a kid, wasn't he?
Old_Association6332@reddit
Kevin Arnold grew up to become one of the wet bandits from Home Alone
(In other words, Daniel Stern, who did Kevin's adult voice, played Marv in Home Alone)
tgbarbie@reddit
Whenever I want a good cry, I watch the last 5 minutes of this show on YouTube. It’s devastating. Wayne took over the business, after Dad died. I like to look back, in wonder. All the tears.
Old_Association6332@reddit
Yeah, I do that too. Very beautiful, powerful and moving. Just watched it yesterday, in fact. Although there's a continuity error in the ending. The narration has Jack dying three years later, and Kevin and his wife and first son meeting Winnie at the airport eight years later. Yet, an earlier episode talks about Jack not only being alive at the time of narration but also mentions him reading to Kevin's children. He couldn't do that if he died before Kevin's children were born.
VelvetMatthews@reddit
Yeah I distinctly remember this was the first time I cried at watching a show or movie. Still gets me…
PvtHudson093@reddit
Its funny that even if was meant for our parents generation, a lot of the show could have happened in our teenage years and nothing would have really changed.
thejunkmanadv@reddit
That is the thing with this show. The subject matter of a lot of the episodes transcends time/generation. If you think about some of the episode themes, first kiss, crushes, best friend issues, teacher issues, family dynamics, first job, sibling rivalry, and it goes on. The key is the show is done in a serious tone as you are seeing these situations through Kevin's eyes.
Season 1 episode 3 really hits a little too close to home as an adult with a son about Kevin's age in that episode.
Plumeria9798@reddit
Very true. I was oddly super into this show during its original run and I wasn’t even a teenager yet. I guess it’s just relatable no matter what.
59apache01@reddit
Hell, I just realized I'm the age Jack Arnold was when he died.
If that isn't a wake-up call I don't know what is.
59apache01@reddit
Jack Arnold, coming home every day looking beaten and exhausted, would reply "Work's work" when Norma would ask him how work was that day.
It took me years to understand those moments and where he was coming from. I often use the same line when my wife asks me how my day was.

Legitimate_Bird_5712@reddit
The episode where his math teacher died absolutely destroyed me as a kid.
Brian1326@reddit
The Wonder Years doesnt get credit for how brilliant the writing, acting and story are. As others have mentioned, if you watched it when you were 10 and then again when you are 40, its a completely different show. Its the only show on my radar where that is the case.
HippieThanos@reddit
I loved this show as a kid. I remember a lot that episode when the older brother moves to a different room and Kevin was very sad at first
It happened with my and my older brother
RainieTuesday@reddit
The dad always scared me as a little kid! I get it now, Jack!
Myriii1911@reddit
Kevin did have a sister?
One-Earth9294@reddit
Girl from Conan the Destroyer
IIRC she wasn't on the show a lot because she was constantly doing hippie shit with her friends.
Hot-Sauce-P-Hole@reddit (OP)
Yes. She was a hippie and argued with her father about Vietnam.
LeopardDue1112@reddit
Then she married Ross from Friends and become a yuppie lol
Enge712@reddit
I think this was all after her adventure with Conan
Lord-Curriculum@reddit
She's did fine. She's a Q.
avalonfaith@reddit
Every time I watch the episode I'm wondering who the fuck that is!!! Know I know.
One-Earth9294@reddit
All I came to say is 'please don't tell me how old the dad was in this show' and I was never safe I guess.

Fun Fact: The Wonder Years was one of Osama Bin Laden's favorite shows
phillium@reddit
Also fun, for people that, I don't know, didn't pay attention much, the narrator is Daniel Stern, the taller of the Wet Bandits, Marv, from Home Alone.
I attempted to start rewatching the Wonder Years, just for nostalgia, and was instantly like, "Wait a minute! That voice!"
LeopardDue1112@reddit
Are you serious? That is so strange to imagine OBL rooting for Winnie and Kevin.
boner79@reddit
Yep. I just learned this the other day.

Such amazing casting with how Wayne and the dad resembled each other
feickus@reddit
The episode Angel pisses me off so much. Karen brings over a guy she is dating. They are eating and disrespected Jack at his dinner table. I didn't get it as a kid, then I had some disrespect me in my home like that and I realized how much Jack was holding back for his kids.
Janeheroine@reddit
I absolutely loved this show. It gave me some insight into how my grandparents raised my parents, who would have been 13 or so in 1968 which is the first year the show is set.
chunkerton_chunksley@reddit
I watched this show when it came out, again 20 years ago and Im just going through it right now. Kevin is a brat, Wayne is awful, Norma is a gem and I identify with Jack more the older I get
nior_labotomy@reddit
Wait...is that Marilyn Manson?
Zesty-B230F@reddit
Damn, why'd they dis Winnie like that?
pastinaisgreat@reddit

Never was into it. My mom really liked it but she was also 13 in 1969 so it was basically made for her.

The Vietnam War seemed like it was so long ago when I was watching this show. Like ancient history. It might as well have been the pyramids or the Odyssey.
Whereas 2006 was just a couple of years ago.
