Memories of the “Greatest Generation “

When I was young and even a young adult I remember seeing WW2 veterans and others in my grandparent’s generation be very subdued in their displays of patriotism. For example, they would display an American flag on Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day, and Flag Day. Some wore hats that had their unit’s information (e.g. 10th Airborne). I don’t remember a lot of bravado about it. I feel like those who served in WW2 had more to brag about or show off, but didn’t. Between the war and the Great Depression they suffered and served more than any generation alive today. These days I see a lot of the old timers, boomers and Gen X, who maybe served in Vietnam, but mostly not, wearing more gaudy stuff that may or may not be MAGA-affiliated. Has anyone else noticed this, too?
