Lorry drivers, do you prefer actual mirrors or cameras?

Posted by pixpix89@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 52 comments

sim-o@reddit

Mirrors. Always prefer mirrors. Can adjust them to get rid of blindspots, the resultion of the image is far superior, so is the colour reproduction, you don't get LED lights flickering, better depth perception, less distortion, in the rain one drop doesn't bugger the whole image, the heater elements actually dry the lens and clear it (if it's working obviously, with the many cameras I've used hitting the heater button on all of them has done nothing. You don't need to keep turning them on to check if your bay light is green. You can communicate through them, because they're two way. You can also see if the driver you're overtaking is paying attention, seen you etc. The advantage of cameras is you're less likely to hit the on a branch or something and you don't get dazzled by misaligned headlights behind you. Some camera mirrors are better than others, and some aren't bad but actual mirrors are always better for me.

Do you guys really do the “hokey crokey” and not the “Hokey Pokey?”.. and don’t use “that’s what it’s all about!”

British Police?

As well as all the other explanations here, from the publics perspective, there's no police officer that can't arrest you. So like, a member of the British transport police can still arrest you if you're breaking the law miles away from train station. You can't flick them the V and tell them to fuck off because it's not their jurisdiction. (someone will come and say I'm wrong, but as with everything there's always an exception)

I love watching British police/crime procedurals. How do the SIO/CIOs drive such nice cars like Audi, BMW. Etc? Are those their own personal cars? Do they have to have special police license plates? Do they have to pay for their cars?

You might be able to identify an unmarked car by spotting the blue lights in the grill or windows but they don't have special number plates or anything like that

When a case is passed from magistrate to crown court it's because of the seriousness of the case. I can't Google it right now but the magistrate won't have the power to sentence the defendant if they're found guilty, so passes the case to the crown court. A magistrate can only sentence up to a certain amount of time in prison.

"This standard is not meant to define the proper method for brewing tea intended for general consumption, but rather to document a tea brewing procedure where meaningful sensory comparisons can be made." So not a standard for brewing tea, just a standard so arguments start from the same place lol How the hell you knew of that standard, I'm not sure I want to know haha

Do you get strange looks when asking for a table at a restaurant without booking?

Posted by ACuriousCustard@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 43 comments

I've never got a strange or funny look asking for a table. I've been refused politely, apologetically on the rare occasion, but never with a look like you describe. Maybe you're going to higher class restaurants than me but in my world it's fine to go to a resteraunt and enquire about a table on the spot.

Yeah, I had a bit of a 'wtf?' moment with that one the first time too but it's just consecutive roundabouts. You need to be awake through it but it's just one roundabout after another in the end.

They're all pretty big single roundabouts, except for Swindon. They're piece of piss. Swindon's magic roundabout can be intimidating if you're not a confident driver but it's still just one roundabout after another. There's a few magic roundabouts, like Swindon's. One of the others I can think of is the [Hemel Hempstead one](https://maps.app.goo.gl/Lgp85hpbh2PNCjaP7).

They're not always rubbish. There was one a couple of years ago that was awesome. The air had a certain something to it. Massive lightning, even bigger, long rumbling thunder and the air felt... Felt like it wouldn't have been out of place if an army of orcs had come round the corner pushing a trebuche

I was tired and got my maths completely wrong. I'm not spending nearly as much on vapes as tobacc, it's about 20 quid too.

I remember 10 malboro cost 79p. I stopped smoking ready made when they got to a fiver for 20. Smoked roll ups until recently when 30g of amber leaf cost about £27 and I'd go through 60g a week so I started vaping. It's pretty grim but about a fiver a week cheaper. The vaping is not good but I feel better in myself. I recently had a bout of self sabotage and bought 20 malboro. Twenty fucking quid and apparently I'm still a 20 a day smoker.

When I was a kid (40 ish years ago) we used to stop at one on our way up north to visit grandma, about 2.5 hours aways. I'd insist on it because I loved their cake and would be a right little shit if we didn't stop. It was just a Victoria sponge out of a box like you could buy at Tesco. It was only a year ago I realised that cafe, full of lorry drivers, was only 45 minutes away from where we lived! It's been boarded up for years now but I reckon it'd make an awesome bike cafe

You're slipping your clutch a lot by pulling away in second. You'll burn it out in no time at all. Pull away in 1st and change up to 2nd earlier.
