We have a monthly InTune patch/fix rollout where we sacrifice an serial board from some 1994 mainframe, pour Dorito dust on the floor in a circle, and chat "Bill Gates" 3x's into a polished AOL CD. It usually works. There was that one time we summoned a demon from Remond, but he's doing our images in back closet now. Think Richmond from the IT Crowd and you'll be halfway there.

Do companies actually want IT managers?

This is the answer. Equate this to lost revenue, downtime, lost revenue, zero productivity, lost revenue...did I mention lost revenue? It's all C-levels understand sometimes.

Better spring for the sound proof enclosure which wasn't so sound proof. For the youngsters, think a breadbox but with baffles. Then make it 10x as large. Ok. A breadbox is a... nevermind.

Be honest - how do you handle documentation when you're the only IT person?

Posted by sandb0x79@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 266 comments

pmandryk@reddit

Screenshots and Notepad++. That's it. Don't document anything that is already in a manual. Just the exceptions. Keep track of licensing, renewal dates, vendor support numbers, etc. If you'll excuse me, I've got some documentation to do...

This. Until you realize that you are alone and that no one is there to help you. You can be a victim of your own success by fixing things for cheap and without support. Then there is the one time where you cannot "perform" a miracle and now you're the worst IT person they've ever had. Been there. Got the T-shirt.

How many of you moved away from VMware ?

Damn. I'm starting to talk to them about going back from VMWare. For context, ran Scale from 2015-2022, got a new job with a horribly installed VMWare cluster. Looking to go back to Scale. Can't afford VMWare new licensing. What does everyone do now? HyperV or Proxmox? Don't have a large staff and need something simple and reliable for basic, light server loads. I think HyperV is it.
