Just to add to conspiracy theory.... With government shutdown and all workers are out, could you imagine, what the same guy who misspell your name on driver license making updates on AWS DNS and adjustment for Azure? Just a scarry thought...

Especially since Twitter/ X is out of favour. I almost yearn for the days where twitter was free and ubiquitous for traffic, news, outages. Now that it’s locked behind accounts and otherwise tainted it’s good we have Reddit else how would I know it’s not just us!

Looks at the current azure health status it saying it was a issue with azure front door. The latest message was they were redirect DNS to working front door sites and backing out azure front door changes to its last known good config. Azure Front door is there premium firewall product, not DNS. I could see how a firewall could cause this too and it's definitely easier to see why only certain things were affected.

Reddit is just cleaner to make sense of outages. With Reddit: Is a service down? Yes. With Down Detector: Here's a heatmap representing how many people have reported this service as being down. If you don't know the country where the server running this service is located, and your country doesn't have a mirror for that service, or your local mirror isn't down but it's not able to do its job because the main server can't give it the data it needs, we'll claim the service isn't down. Case in point, DD is saying Bing Maps is up in Canada, yet the US map shows a dozen red blobs of varying size with no clear verdict on whether the service is down.

I have been in this field since the 90s. Uptime is by far the highest it has ever been. Fully hosted on AWS since 2010, I have had an outage maybe once every 3-4 years. Major colo outages where once every 3-4 months.
View on Reddit #70001332

View on Reddit #70017333

d00ber@reddit

Every 3-4 months? What the heck? Why were outages happening that often? ISP issues or something? That's a lot! I've been around for a similar length of time.
View on Reddit #70003255

caguru@reddit

High volume induced outages mostly but also a few hacks / DDoS. When you're running large (by 90s standards), complex applications with over 10M+ transactions a day on fixed hardware, and you get sudden unplanned spikes, shit often goes sideways in new, unexpected ways. Colo's are also difficult to do multi regional hosting for many orgs, but the main reason I switched to the cloud was auto-scaling. Literally turned my biggest headache into a tiny issue. My point still stands though, outages now are practically non existent, and when they do happen, I'm not responsible for fixing the hardware. For any kind of real scale, especially with unpredictable loads, the cloud is still the best option by far for me.
View on Reddit #70004991

d00ber@reddit

Interesting and definitely understandable for the 90s and early 2000s! My last job was at a large AI/ML company as a systems engineer (specially infra side) designing large scale Kubernetes clusters (thousands of physical servers). We didn't see any outages for the time I was there, not from my design or anything I think a lot of things like SDN and so many other failover network layer both LAN and WAN just make it easier these days, not to mention containerization itself.

View on Reddit #69995105

Attic81@reddit

I don't have selective memory about supporting stuff on prem and in colo because I still have PTSD from decades past of something breaking majorly where you have to be on site trying to fix it. There's also no way we could do what we can with the resources we have without public cloud, to say nothing of the support and maintenance required. Yeah it sucks occasionally when there are outages but plan what redundancies you need, test periodically. I never want to see the inside of a data centre again in an emergency, thanks all the same.
View on Reddit #70006757

HotTakes4HotCakes@reddit

Because people see occasional downtime as a acceptable trade-off for the convenience. The same way they see the price tag as a acceptable trade-off for the convenience. And the same way they see all of the lock-in tactics, weaker management tools, obfuscation, and lack of meaningful support as trade-offs for the convenience.

Hilarious that one of our vendors required us to move to Microsoft for IDP and we have feverously been working to get all the old folks (I resemble that comment) to set up their authenticator app. Well, I was supposed to work with one of those users today and I cant set it up because of the issues with Microsoft. I logged myself into that vendor's site, which would normally force me to MFA after authenticating with the password but today it was all like "COME ON IN!" ![gif](giphy|tmKA1LB1BHawg01wY9)

Hey, I just had a thought; How about we made Internet decentralized, brought all that we have up in the cloud (intune, entra, exchange etc) down onto our own onprem servers and hosted it ourselves? Microsoft-licenses as a subscribed service could be switched for a one time purchase fee, and instead we’d purchase new licenses every other year as we’d upgrade our servers and clients. When in need of remote connections back to our corporate resources, it could have been done using vpn and remote desktop/terminal server solutions (or citrix). I feel I am onto something here…!? All those in favour, raise your hands! /Sarcasm
View on Reddit #70002006

rugter100@reddit

sounds great but that would be impossible to do, that would never be realistically viable and we cant expect companies to manage their own hardware, the cloud is definetely the only way for the internet to work. /Sarcasm

This excuse doesn't hold water with me. How many authoritative DNS providers are there? We have like 7 big ones that i can think of. If it was DNS from one rogue provider re-route to one that works until you can fix your issue.

Latest from Microsoft: "Starting at approximately 16:00 UTC, we began experiencing DNS issues resulting in availability degradation of some services. We have taken action that is expected to address the portal access issues here shortly. We are actively investigating the underlying issue and additional mitigation actions." It may also be Front Door (or DNS too) as I've been having trouble resolving the address to our Azure CDN, but most of our web apps are still operational.

I've got intermittent access to admin portals in the US. Everything routing through Azure Front Door seems to be impacted. Front Door is a global service, but tanks completely if MS has an issue with it in the Central US Azure region. Just like AWS with east-us-1 it has a baked in single point of failure...
