How many IT admins/Helpdesk staff is normal ?

These are the real questions to ask. I would add that not every IT tech can work flat out for an entire shift. There is research time, documentation time, break time, emailing the users time, and whatever else time. Non-IT don't see how busy you are. It's how busy you aren't. As well as is something that work on broken right now.

Insurance company going to do Internal Pen Test. I attempted to Lock the network down beforehand.

Posted by Electronic_Tap_3625@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 344 comments

With my experience with having Pen Tests run on my network, it's always the little things at the user level which gets you. All the big things are generally secured or can warn you but the little exceptions are undocumented and overlooked...but not by a Pen Tester.

What do you all use for onboarding a user (getting the 'list' of needs for IT). Our list is growing and causing headaches for day one due to everyone 'oh ya, we need this too'

Managed IT services vs in-house admin. Is it worth outsourcing?

Posted by nigaabuser@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 18 comments

pmandryk@reddit

My take is that some bits could be successfully outsourced but there are parts of your business that an MSP will never (or won't want to) understand. HelpDesk and Security monitoring are two which could be done, but you always need someone on staff to be dealing with issues as that team should have the business's best interest. Answering phones, open tickets, and fixing low-level issues takes time away from your team. Security is expensive, specialized, and constantly changing.

Made a huge mistake - thinking of calling it quits

Best advice I was given is to get on top or ahead of it. Do not let others fill in the blanks of what remediation should look like. They will concentrate on the fault and not the solution. Acknowledge that this is not ideal and is not what your plan was. Do not fall on your sword. Create a remediation plan with 1 or 3 possible paths, if possible. Work through this until resolved. Smile. Breathe. You're gonna have to eat some shit, but you'll survive. You've got this.

It monitors almost everything. Srvr with 100 sensors is free forever. Can run scripts, send alerts via 15 or so different methods. Solid piece of kit.

Can't believe that I had to scroll so far down to see someone mention Scale. Solid and it just works. It might not have all the bells and whistles as VMWare, but it is dependable and much cheaper. However, I do suspect that their prices will rise soon too.

I remember years ago, that you could rename a file or folder with a hard-coded space by entering the name with ALT255+ALT255+ALT255. It was impossible to delete unless you knew how to rename it.

PRTG with SNMP. Free with 100 sensors I think. It will not see CDP neighbours or links, but it will show SFlow/NFlow, and a tonne about your switches.
