Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers?

Posted by Succinate_dehydrogen@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 3571 comments

msrch@reddit

I earn 65k a year. It seems like a lot but I’m a single parent and my rent alone is £1200 a month. I live in the north. I recently paid off my student loan (plan 1, I’m 35) and that’s made a huge difference to my monthly disposable income though. I’m not whingeing though, I love my job for the most part, I feel fulfilled and feel like I’m making a difference in the world. And whilst I work around 50-55 hours a week, I have a pretty good work life balance these days (after many, many years of not being able to balance it all).

Single people with no WFH - how do you manage to do it all?

I have adhd and a kid too so totally feel you. It’s so so hard being single! I usually get a cleaner in once every 3/4 months to do a deeper clean, otherwise I don’t spend time doing a full house clean, I clean little and often. So I’ll vacuum 3 times a week which will take 5 mins. Wipe and clean toilets all in one go. I’ll wash the bathroom sinks when it needs it. My house is never ‘spotless’ but it’s fine. I get up at 5.50 or 5.40 if I need to wash my hair. Makeup and hair done before my son gets up at 6.30. Leave the house at 7.25 to drop my son off at school, at work by 7.50 (moved house for a shorter commute). We generally eat the same things during the week to minimise decision making. Laundry I do often, have an airing rack and a dehumidifier in the spare bedroom so it’s quick to dry and I do this 2 times a week usually so it’s not left til weekend. It’s really not easy but by splitting things up I find that the most manageable.

what advice would you give the younger generation?

msrch@reddit

Have boundaries with your kid, but you don’t have to be mean or nasty when you enforce them. Speak to your kid with kindness. Tell them everyday that you love them. Do cheap fun things. I bought a hammock for £6 off Temu and we go out for a picnic once a week with no phone for me. Get outside everyday. Give them chances to make mistakes, it’s how they learn. Support them when they make mistakes.

Why do you think so many people have children when they are struggling to get by financially?

Posted by BeneficialJuice2878@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1043 comments

msrch@reddit

Yeah my parents were the same. Grew up in poverty, emotionally abusive, had nothing, everything stunk of smoke and yet my parents were massive snobs and refused to claim benefits etc. and looked down on people who did. They absolutely should not have had children, I think they were just young and stupid. I was the first in 4 generations not to be a teenage mum and the first to leave the area.

I moved out at 18 to uni and haven’t been back. Bought a house with my ex when I was 28 and when we split up I moved into a rented house. Rent is £1200, council tax (with my 25% discount) is £160, electricity and gas £200 easily. I earn a good wage but as a single mum I don’t think I’ll ever be able to buy a house again.

Is it common for people from the UK to know the history of the local area that you live?

Posted by RIPAlPowell@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 165 comments

msrch@reddit

I grew up in Northumberland and feel like we did a lot of local history. Our town isn’t one of the fancy ones but it has a castle so we learnt about that and its history. We did a lot of Romans, a lot of visits to local Roman sites, the wall. A lot of life before the Romans, vikings. I feel like we did a lot about the history of the area and a lot about British history in general too

Was literally just thinking why do people care so much about what other people do. It doesn’t hurt you, it makes the happy. Why the hell not? Don’t get why people need to judge other people. Be nice to others, don’t be mean. It’s that simple honestly.

To add to this, I grew up suffering from neglect and it impacts you your whole life, I’m in my 30s now and sometimes still have nightmares about the mess. It’s not your fault but you internalise it. Please tell your boyfriend’s mum. I know you have broken up but you’re a lovely person and a good friend, well done for caring for him 🥰

I find the opposite. I don’t have a flash job at all but I’m rather senior at my work. I’m internet dating and I, sadly, find I have more success if I downplay my job slightly. At least until we get to know each other better.

My 5 year old is very outgoing (more so than me and his dad) and it helps me with my social anxieties. I am forced to talk to people that he’s interacted with. Can’t walk through a supermarket without him striking up conversation with some random person (he is only allowed to do this with an adult present obviously, we’ve taught him stranger danger). Last week he told an old man he liked his hat and it ended up in the old man telling me about him and his wife’s trip to Moscow in 1991 for 25 mins

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom?

Posted by MrBananaStand1990@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1369 comments

msrch@reddit

We had a PE teacher who got sacked for throwing cricket balls at us and for coming in the girls changing rooms whilst we were getting changed. Middle school so Year 5-8, age 9-13. Another teacher in Year 10 who lost control of our class (we were top set…how bad could we have been really) and retaliated by calling a girl a slut. We actually as individuals got up and walked out of the class for that. Chemistry teacher who added me and my peers on FB and commented lewd things on our pictures. He also took us on an overnight trip and barged into someone’s room at midnight if I remember. I’m a teacher myself now 🤣 and I can’t believe how vile these adults were….there are others but these are the ones I remember off the top of my head. My best teacher was Mrs D for maths. So harsh on us but in a kind way, super high expectations. Strict routines and you knew exactly what she wanted from you. Amazing teacher. Gave us stickers when she marked our books (even in Year 11). I got an A* in maths and she is what inspired me to become a teacher.

Do you ever call in sick for work when you’re not?

Posted by Sadexjeer@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 353 comments

msrch@reddit

I don’t often get physically sick so wouldn’t take any days off. But a few years ago I had a mental health day (very towards the end of my abusive relationship) and it absolutely made a huge difference to my outlook, it was exactly what I needed and made the world of difference. So now when I need a day, I’ll take one. I took one a few weeks ago and spent the day pottering around, running errands and watch rubbish on the tv lol. And I chose the day so it would have minimal impact on my colleagues. You’ve got to look after yourself. I’m a manager and would always always urge people to stay off if they’re sick or run down, be it mentally or physically.

This is after my kid pushed her son, I gave mine ‘the look’, and without me needing to say anything, he apologised to his friend. I was like wtf that’s excellent parenting 🤣 strong boundaries, clear expectations, lots of love and lots of praise. Still fuming actually

What’s life like in the new build estates that are popping up everywhere?

Posted by Goose-rider3000@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 52 comments

msrch@reddit

I lived in one. It was fine, rural but attached to a town. So a 10 min walk to the shops or a 1 min drive. 2 primary schools, high school, train into the city. 3/4 pubs within 10 min walking distance. We were on the end of the street so fairly private garden etc. It was busy with (parked) cars, my ex still lives there and I’m always surprised at how many cars are on the roads around the estate. The neighbours in front of him have 4 cars (2 adults and 2 grown up children). I think we paid too much for our (absolutely lovely) house as it’s not selling now 6 years later.

I went 2 years ago with fatigue, brain fog, tiredness, very low resting heart rate (not an athlete) and general aches at the age of 33. Was told it’s to be expected as a person with a full time job and a child lol and I should try and relax more. Finally went back last week and had an amazing experience, saw a different GP and was booked in for the same day for bloods, ECG and 3 days later for a chest X-ray. Waiting on everything to come back now and see if there’s anything going on. Really felt listened to.

Oh mate, how do you know they won’t visit you? If you’re self aware at least you can make a change now? I see my parents about once every 3/4 months. It hurts my soul when I hear about adult friends going to their parents house for dinner on a random weeknight, or going shopping together or on holiday together. That’s what I want for my son, to know he’s always welcome and to know how loved he is. He’s 5 and I’m sure I tell him a love him more times in a day than my parents did in my childhood lol

How Do British People Feel About the Cost of Living in the UK?

Posted by Junior-Ad-4797@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 969 comments

msrch@reddit

I know exactly what you mean. When I moved out, I moved into privately rented accommodation, my ex lives in the house we owned together. My mortgage was £800 or £400 each on a 3 bed detached new build. So these days I’m paying £800 a month more on rent than I used to pay towards my mortgage (paying £1200 a month). But I can’t afford a mortgage alone…I wonder why lol. And of course this doesn’t take into account bills, council tax, furnishing an entire property alone etc. I don’t qualify for any benefits and my ex claims child benefit so I can’t even get that. So despite owning a house in my 20s, my 30s will be spent renting and that’s ok I guess. My quality of life is still better even with significantly less disposable income.
