Is it common for people from the UK to know the history of the local area that you live?

Problem is schools are treated as standardized institutions with a top-down bureaucracy approach eg SATs testing fo kids for data collection. Although Primary schools are often staffed with brilliant teachers they often are so run off their feet mainly due to ridiculous tick box exercises they have less time to explore LOCAL CONNECTION that make the young children have a sense of story, belonging and history which does so much to connect the dots and make sense of the immediate world to young minds… So often it is done thanks to the efforts of the teachers but not to a significant degree. Secondary schools are even more regimented and follow the National Curriculum and “teach to test” for exam scores to boost the school’s rating so again much much less is taught than could be. This also means a skew: Local history comes more into its own via “Social History” how people in times gone by lived and how local artefacts remain describing this eg old stone bridges, mills, place names and more… Curriculum is more about key headline events Kings and Queens and Dates and Battles especially given how vast and long history is to condense information. Additionally in the UK vast transition of rural people to urban workers in the beginning of the industrial age created a massive schism in a lot of people from their origins and towns and cities change a lot more so generally most people are strangers to the area they live in or low information on its background and history but because there is so much enough people do mug up on things and lots of small groups exist for this, especially as one gets older eg retirees.
