All PR's approved and merged at end of every sprint

It's worse than that. You put in a PR, somebody asks for changes, and you go "Nah, I'm not going to do that", and just leave it knowing it will get merged anyway.

What’s something that instantly tells you someone has never had to survive normal British life?

Yes, I had this in Llandudno. I was carefully keeping an eye on the seagull in front of me, knowing that they don't like being watched, when one swooped from behind and stole my scotch egg!

Do you consider how many calories you consume each day?

Posted by clfhw@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 251 comments

mark_b@reddit

I don´t track them strictly, but I do look and try to have an idea of whether something contains a lot of calories for the food that it is. For example, one type of pizza might have 800 calories, whereas another might have 1700 (almost a whole day's calories in one meal!). I also keep an eye on sugar in the same way. For example, some yoghurts have as much as 4 teaspoons of sugar in them! I'm mindful that I need around 2000 calories per day, but if I go over one day I'll cut back a little the next, it's no big deal. I also weigh myself regularly even though I'm not overweight, so that I can be informed early if it's heading in the wrong direction.

Do I ask for ticket money?

Posted by Calgib@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 929 comments

mark_b@reddit

Everyone's talking about £10, but this is only for 1 ticket and in your post you mention him possibly coming regularly. A one-off is a gift, no question about it. Maybe he'll get you something back and who cares if it's not the same cost. If it turns into a regular event then I'd expect him to offer to pay for his own ticket for future games.

My local council will do this (almost) any day of the year. You have to book a couple of weeks in advance, but they will pick up bulky items for free. We still get fly tipping though, I had to report one today.

Sarcasm needs to be funny as well. You can't just say something wrong and expect people to laugh with you. British people have great intuition for when sarcasm is funny and when it just falls flat, that's the part people from other countries find hard to understand.

Why do I have to be age verified to buy 0% alcohol ‘spirits’?

Posted by PristineDouble423@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 132 comments

It's the till that asks for the age verification based on what was scanned. The staff don't need to decide anything up until that point. The supermarket could easily mark no alcohol drinks as not needing verification.

Sanitiser is worse than soap and water. It's not very good at removing viruses such as Norovirus. And it doesn't remove germs from your hands, just kills them but they're still there. Hand sanitiser is okay if you don't have an alternative but soap and water is the superior method.

Posted by Commercial_Night2867@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 876 comments

mark_b@reddit

I never understand this argument. We should wash our hands at regular intervals anyway because they pick up dirt and germs from just about every surface. So surely the occasion of going to the toilet, when everything you need is right there, is as good as any? Next time you hear this, ask them if that's them admitting that they don't do any work. Ask them if they stand there all jazz hands making sure they don't touch anything except their cock all day. Ask them how on earth did they exit the bathroom? Did they stand there with their jazz hands waiting for someone else to come in so that they could get out without touching the door?

What tips do you have to save money?

Posted by Munster2025@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 32 comments

mark_b@reddit

A lot of my suggestions have already been made, but here's a few that you might find useful. Leave your wallet at home unless you know you need to do a food shop or something. That way you won't fritter as much. Batch cook and freeze in meal-sized portions. This might sound strange to some, but as well as savings accounts etc, I have what I call my current account overflow. Basically my current account always has £1000 balance, and I get a text message warning if it goes below. If I want to spend then I need to transfer from the overflow account first. This achieves 2 things. 1, it's not possible for money to leave my current account without me knowing about it. 2, it creates an extra step for spending money that makes me stop and think before I do it.

Allegedly being drunk on a pedal cycle. I was just making my way back to the railway station to catch the last train home. Told me he was arresting me and made me sit in his car. Then, after a chat with the station he "de-arrested" me, told me to lock my bike up against some random gate (like they would be happy about that in the morning) and took me on blues and twos to the station. Of course, by this point I had missed the last train home so had to get my mate out of bed for somewhere to stay. Imagine my surprise when 3 months later I received a summons through the post. He obviously didn't have enough evidence for a more recent or relevant law, so he'd dragged out the Licencing Act of 1872! I wish I was making this up. Fortunately a visit to the solicitor and a few weeks of toing and froing and it was dropped due to not being in the public interest.

I refuse to ride my bike on the main roads around here. And I've lost count of how many times someone has driven over a crossing _whilst I'm actually on it._

You have the wrong idea about credit cards. I admit, the word "credit" in the name is a bit of a distraction. The best way to use a credit card is to only buy things on them when you already have the money, and then set up a direct debit to pay the balance off in full every month. This way you can have a rewards card and collect the points, build up a good credit history, and take advantage of the security protection they offer. The interest rates on rewards credit cards are so high that it's never a good idea to pay it. You're far better off using a bank overdraft or something if you do need to borrow money. I use my credit card everywhere I can, and the bill is always paid in full every month.

I usually holiday on my own, so I'll buy a guide book for the place I'm going to. They nearly always (check first) have walking tours in them, and I wander around the city trying to find all the points of interest. Hopefully the place I'm in has some kind of spa culture, so I can indulge in some pampering. The rest of the time is spent working on some personal programming projects.
