Is the dread of going back to work starting to creep in yet?

I work from home and I fairly enjoy my job. But the dread has started. Anyone else?

Absolutely. I have horrendous anxiety about work normally and the break just heightens it.

Love my job and the second im there im enjoying it. Give me two days off or more like now ? im a nervous wreck and cant sleep the night before il even stay away until 4am in bed worrying then need to be up for 6am to go to work, i feel like throwing up (this happened to me on new years day i actually threw up in work which was double pay and i got sent home.. was gutted to miss out on the double pay but boss wouldnt let me stay as she was concerned about me so ive been home since and im back on Monday) it reminds me of the days i was in highschool (im 31 now) and being bullied so i would be a sick wreck the night before going back to school but i love this job and the people there and im treated well so cant understand what my issue is. Glad im not alone but im sad others go through it.

I used to badly suffer from this. I feel you. The break helps but can almost make things worse at the same time.

I think it’s more to do with my own issues around work than the role I specifically do. So I’m in therapy trying to work on myself so I hopefully will start to feel less anxious.
View on Reddit #74930958

LegitimateDraw3902@reddit

I’m exactly the same as you. There’s no point in me moving jobs as the issue is me, not the job. Good luck working things out. I’ve been having therapy for 12 months and it’s helped a lot. If not already read I’d also recommend The Chimp Paradox book - it really made sense to me and helped further.

I started back on Friday so way ahead of you pal! We had a server crash and take down quite a lot of systems late Friday evening, so what I'm dreading tomorrow is the head of IT Support ringing me to bitch about it and me telling him that he's talking to the wrong person.
View on Reddit #75022015

yearsofpractice@reddit

Hey OP. Honestly, no, but it’s taken me ***literally years*** to get to this point. I’m a 49 year old married father of two with a middle-management IT type job. It’s an endless cascade of surreal, aggressive bullshit - as is every job - but I’m feeling gently curious and relaxed about how work will be when I go back on Monday. It’s because of the following: - Following a breakdown related to work in 2022, therapy - this helped me understand that I was able to control my reaction to work. Realising that it wasn’t part of my identity was very powerful. It’s just an exchange of skills and time for money, nothing more. Also - therapy taught me that difficult or tough times aren’t necessarily bad - they’re just a symptom of being alive. - Further to the above, accepting that almost nothing at work is within my direct control - I can do what I can, nothing more and nothing less. I have made the decision that I’d rather be sacked than let work intrude on my private life. I do what I can during the day and leave it at that. - Finally - sobriety. I spent 30-odd trying to drink myself happy. Now I’m sober, my mind works at least 10% more quickly and work is just a breeze. That’s me. I know it probably wasn’t what you wanted to hear, but there is hope.

View on Reddit #74982024

Frosty_Leg4438@reddit

I can’t thumb up point 1 enough (43 y/o) I think part of the secret to “growing up” is changing the balance in where you get “acceptance” from. When you’re a kid, you’re designed to get your sense of validity/acceptance from *other* people (teacher gives you a gold star, parent says you’ve done well) As an adult this stops serving you and you need to get this from yourself. So may people are stuck in a child-like relationship with work, looking to it to give you a sense of “a job well done” or that your life is valid. Finding ways to break this and instead get that tick from yourself is life changing.
View on Reddit #74941700

The therapy I did was called Acceptance Commitment Therapy and it’s exactly as you describe. It’s such a life changer.

Sort of. I am getting anxiety about my job as I am getting older 49 and there are plenty of new much younger employees we've taken on board recently. I get worried I may be made redundant because I'm older and get paid top wack for what I do. I just feel I am replaceable based on cost and age. I'm a software developer
View on Reddit #74932419

ceehred@reddit

Me too. I'm a little older but in a part of the company dealing with more "legacy" solutions, and I'm involved in even only a small part of that. I have the respect of my current managers, who have seen the lack of ability of cheaper/less-experienced staff who are unable or (in my opinion, more alarmingly) not interested in the challenges of the work I do, so I don't currently feel "replaceable". But what happens when my supporters retire or leave? And what happens when the products I work on don't show the same revenue growth they've enjoyed, or get to the point where they're too mature to develop further... 10 more years and I could consider retirement, though my confidence in making it to that shrinks every time leadership changes. I've cut-back on the considerable extra hours I've (always) donated to do the best possible job, and started to use them to train myself in new things, at least to appease myself.

Not dread so much as annoyance. I caught some awful cold around Boxing Day, and it's only just (almost) buggered off in time for the return to work. Practically my entite bloody holiday wasted being bedridden and feeling awful instead of doing the stuff I wanted to get done. Have to drove home today after spending the holidays with family, and will no doubt pass it on to my (ex-)partner who I'm still living with at the moment, which will make her even more happy with me than she already is. The year's off to a fine start, basically.

I will never understand how WFH’ers “dread” going to work. You literally live in your workplace, you have nowhere to go tomorrow. You don’t have to be around people or re adapt to an environment again? What’s the issue 😭
View on Reddit #74932090

Strong_Neck8236@reddit

Work isn't (just) the place you are, it's what you're doing there. Not all of that is nice, even from home.
View on Reddit #74941305

Starsinthedistance24@reddit

You still have to adapt to going to work again though - that could be lots of meetings, deadlines, dealing with people virtually (which is harder than in person in my opinion… even just using your brain a bit harder lol. I’m hybrid so it’s a little bit different, but having two weeks off chilling then having to work again isn’t always easy.

I can understand that but how can you dread it more than someone who ACTUALLY goes to work 😭
View on Reddit #74933219

Yeah I get this. Also, not every WFH is equal. On social media I see people WFH and they admit they do like two hours of work a day if that. Even I’m jealous! Yet when I WFH I hardly have time for a lunch break and I end up staying late sometimes. However that would be so much worse if I had to show up in the office every single day!

My sister takes naps throughout the day and has a lot more free time as she doesn’t have to commute. She also earns a lot more than me.  I have a 100 mile round trip commute every day and barely have time to make dinner!  I clearly picked the wrong career!

I'm always in two minds about working over christmas but I don't think I've had more than 1 day outside the bank holidays since 2020. It always goes the same way - \- 2-3 weeks before people catch wind that you're working over the xmas period and 'helpfully' start thinking of things you can do during the period so you're 'not just sitting around' - you end up with a to-do list 3x longer than at any other point in the year. \- The actual period comes around and those task-setters toddle off on their paid time off. Something randomly breaks which takes up half the time to fix, and the rest of the time is spent bouncing random enquiries from people who figured 'they'd ask now as it's the quiet period and you're probably not doing anything anyway' \- Christmas, the days between and new years all come and go in a moment \- The micro-week after new years eve comes around and about half the people who were off come back and say 'oh, was it surprisingly busy after all?' \- The actual first day back for everyone comes around and the entire of the first two days are them 'catching up on emails' (who's been emailing you? everyone has been off and those who weren't were dealing with the random stuff that came up that didn't involve you anyway) \- Work begins properly again around the Wednesday. Now that I'm sort of used to it, I think I prefer it vs. the so-called 'dread' of the first day back, but I wouldn't worry about having to do any 'proper' work until at least Tuesday afternoon.

I thought I was back on the 2nd, my hangovers last a couple of days now so I was certainly dreading that, but I’m fine going back Monday.

Swear this sub's questions lately are some sort of demoralisation campaign, absolutely miserable. My fault for reading them

This would've been me but I've moved from days to nights and ever since I was happier being at work than being at home doing nothing all day. I would even be happy to accept taking overtime. My manager loves that he can rely on me if people blow out when doing night shifts. The best thing is that there are no managers to micro manage, no customers or employees to engage in small talk with me which I hate. I can relax most of the night as it's not demanding at all. Feel like I've found my calling cause when I used to do days I would fake illness to not come in. The dread of coming into work and getting through a shift with my social anxiety was hell. As long as I can help it I will never go back to doing days again.

No, I technically worked yesterday. Admittedly that meant setting up a new home NAS and just moving the mouse a couple of times.

100% I'll start with the history. I'm 41, I've worked all the way over Christmas since before I left school as my old man had his own company so school holidays were for working. Got a new job and used some tactical holidays to end up with 4 weeks off! Yeah, turns out I'm better at work. Mental health has went through the floor due to lack of purpose, argued like hell with my wife all the way through then we've had to call it quits on new year's day. It's not fair to raise our daughter in a bad environment. So aye, now I'm stuck on holiday looking for somewhere to live minus wife, daughter and dog. But hey ho, worse things happen at sea.

These things happen. Things have been a bit rocky for a little while. Neither of us is to blame but at the same time we both are. Complacency kills, tomorrow is promised to no-one

Same! Also had no choice in the matter, work place closed for 2 weeks. I'd rather have time off in spring or summer

It's the dread of 5.10am wake ups to go to the gym at 6am then driving in Glasgow City centre traffic. I have fair enjoyed my freedom this past fortnight.

I don’t mind the work element, it’s the stress of juggling work and kids that is the biggest headache!

Yes. Christmas break is the only time I genuinely feel I can fully switch off. My sleep schedule is a bit of a mess as well so Monday morning is going to be fun. Only a 3 day week for me though so silver linings and all that..

The good thing about working through xmas is that you don't get hit with January blues, or at least, anywhere near as hard.

God yeah. My whole work closes so reminding myself that (a) my inbox will be empty and (b) getting back into my eating/sleeping routine will be good for me.

I’ve been off since Dec 11th and I know I’m going back to a shit show on Monday :( I actually really like my job but a miserable, difficult client was kicking off right as I left and they’ll take my going on leave very personally!!!

Went back yesterday for a single day. Which tbh has been a nice ease back in, empty my emails, make sure no disasters happened in between Christmas and New Year, go back on Monday like its a regular Monday. Highly recommend.
