For those of you that had kids, how old are they?

kt1982mt@reddit

I’m 44, my kids are 17yo and 15yo. My husband and I, despite the usual ups and downs of raising teenagers, are happy that our kids are in this phase of life at our age. They’re gaining a bit more independence and can be trusted to help out around the house and garden a bit. In comparison, my brother is a few years younger than me and has two kids, ages 7yo and 10yo. Him and his wife get a lot of help from family and friends and yet are still exhausted with the daily demands of kids of that age.

'Weekend' pronunciation? :)

How often do you get a takeaway?

Posted by Lozzybops@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 774 comments

kt1982mt@reddit

Family of four: two adults and two older teenage kids. We used to do a takeaway dinner on either Friday or Saturday night, and we’d have a cafe/garden centre/pub lunch on either Saturday or Sunday afternoon. It used to be cheaper when our kids were having smaller portions or kids’ meals, but it costs a fortune now! We’ve cut back to having either a takeaway dinner or a lunch out over the weekend. Healthier for us if nothing else!

Do you knock before going into GP room?

I always knock; I think it’s the polite thing to do, and serves to make sure that I’ve got the correct room and am not walking in on another doctor/patient consultation.

If someone says "bi-weekly" would you interpret that as "twice a week" or "every two weeks"?

Posted by Tooleater@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 411 comments

kt1982mt@reddit

Honestly, I’d ask for clarification. I’d use the word “fortnightly” to refer to an every-two-weeks event, and I’d expect most people in the UK to do the same. For something happening twice per week, I’d use the phrase “twice weekly”, and again I’d expect others to say something similar. I’ve found that people avoid using the term bi-weekly because of its ambiguity!

Am I right to think a neighbours house looking directly onto your garden would be terrible?

Posted by Three_Cats_In_1_Coat@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1379 comments

kt1982mt@reddit

This would be a deal breaker for me, unfortunately. I’m honestly surprised that it got planning permission. Regardless, if you buy it and go down the route of checking planning permission, asking for privacy film or opaque glass to be installed, or you fashion some kind of screen of any description, it automatically puts you at the risk of conflict with your new neighbours right from day one. They could be very amenable, or they could be disgruntled, and you likely won’t know until you’re already committed to the house purchase.

What foods were considered a luxury or treat and meant you were "on holiday" as a kid?

Posted by katalyna78@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 403 comments

kt1982mt@reddit

Awww, this brings back memories for me!! My brother and I were allowed to get the mini boxes of cereals when we went on caravan holidays! We were more excited about the cereals than we were about the holiday, it seemed! I liked the boring ones (Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies) and my brother liked the Frosties and Coco Pops etc. We were also allowed to get Nutella for our breakfast toast, which we were definitely not allowed normally. We were also allowed to pick one pack of Marks & Spencer’s biscuits, and we each got a pack of jelly shark sweets from there, too. The jelly sharks were our “car sweets” to keep us quiet on the journey to wherever the caravan was, and we were allowed a hot chocolate and a fancy M&S biscuit at bedtime.

What’s the nosiest question you’ve ever been asked?

Whether my weight changed during breastfeeding, as in did my weight constantly yo-yo between breastfeeding sessions. Asking specifically how much weight I lost during each feeding so they could work out how much my milk weighed and how much my breasts would likely weigh.

37 years ago today, Pan Am Flight 103 exploded while flying over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing all 259 people on board all 11 people on the ground

This was one of the first news stories that I remember. My family and I had travelled down to Lockerbie the week before visiting friends of my parents. I never watched the news when my parents were watching it, as I was only 6 when this happened, but I definitely sat down and watched the footage and news reports of this.

Do you air out your house in the winter?

Posted by Far_Shine6039@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 183 comments

kt1982mt@reddit

It stops condensation, mould and just generally freshens up the air circulating around our home. It’s just a habit that I’m in. I’ve got central heating (gas boiler and radiators throughout the house), and a gas fire in the living room. It doesn’t take long to heat the house up.

kt1982mt@reddit

Yes. I wait until my kids are at school then I open all the windows and air out the house for an hour or so. It ends up being pretty cold in the house afterwards, but I really think it’s worthwhile to do it. I heat the house for the kids coming home from school, though.

Do you rinse after brushing your teeth?

I was told, as an adult, that you shouldn’t rinse after brushing. As a kid, I was told to brush, floss, then use mouthwash, in that order. Now, it’s brush and floss.

kt1982mt@reddit

I read for a minimum of two hours every day. Generally crime, thriller, mystery fiction, but occasionally I’ll dip into something else on the basis of a recommendation. I read at breakfast and lunch, because I’m eating alone so it’s not rude.

How often do you clean your windows (inside)?

When they look dirty, or once every season (so roughly four times a year). The outside of the windows are done at the same time as our windows can turn almost inside out for ease of cleaning.

That’s a great idea! That would actually work really well in my room, and would free up the exercise bike for use as… well, probably a place for drying clothes…

What do you consider to be too sick to go to school or work? How many days off is reasonable?

kt1982mt@reddit

Schools are a nightmare for the attendance issue at the moment. My kids went back to school in mid-August (we’re in Scotland) and both have had several days off already due to the usual cough/cold symptoms that inevitably appear once school starts after the summer. Schools are notoriously germ pools! This shouldn’t be news to anyone, let alone the school staff. We received numerous phone calls and emails asking us to justify our kids’ absences, despite us phoning the school to inform them of the absence and providing the reason why. Loads of kids have been off, and both my kids have confirmed that there have been about 10 or so kids off in every class (so around a third of pupils are off). Imagine the number of phone calls and emails that are going out to parents moaning about attendance? Both my husband and I ended up with the cold as well and I was coughing and spluttering down the phone as I’m trying to confirm to the head of year that my kid was off with the same thing that was causing me to hack up a lung!

Do most Brits identify with their specific country (being English, Scottish, Welsh, etc.) or just as “British?”

I’m just outside of Glasgow and haven’t had my heating on yet. I’m in a detached house, fairly modern, double glazed etc. Our windows are still open on the latch all through the day and we only close the downstairs windows at night. The upstairs windows are staying open and we’re only just starting to notice a slight drop in temperature. It’s definitely not cold at all for our preferences. That said, for about a week now we can smell the smoke from our neighbour’s log burner, so I guess they’re feeling the cold at night now.

I’m up twice every night these days. Once for the toilet, and once just because it’s a habit that’s formed, I think. It’s infuriating.

How many of you have little to no friends outside of your family?

Posted by Astro_Shogun@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 517 comments

kt1982mt@reddit

Me! I’ve ended up a bit isolated from the friends that I once had, thanks to my health issues. I’m quite introverted though so it’s not the end of the world to me. Yes, I’d like to socialise a wee bit more than I currently do, but I’m fine with an occasional coffee meet-up with one or two friends a few times a year.

Is it acceptable to eat fish stew for lunch at work?

Posted by Berlin1960@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 445 comments

kt1982mt@reddit

I’d say it’s unacceptable, to be honest. Anything that leaves a strong odour which migrates throughout the rest of the office building and renders the staff room/lunch room unpleasant or unusable is not acceptable. My previous workplace had a serial offender who routinely heated up the most obnoxious smelling foods I’ve ever encountered: fish stews, egg curry, a concoction of tripe etc. HR had to get him to stop because (in a shared building, of which our company was on the middle floor) the five other companies located in the building could all smell it throughout the entire building. Clients and visitors attending meetings were repulsed, and pregnant women were throwing up right, left and centre. The stinking food was actually the least of the worries in comparison to the folk who had to share an office with him….. Apparently he had a flatulence problem as well 🤮

I don’t keep the best of health, so I’d spend every available moment making memories with my husband and kids. I’d make sure that weekends were spent doing interesting fun stuff that we usually don’t have the money to do, and I’d make sure that we got a holiday in the summer where we could just forget about everything and live in the moment for once.
