Do you air out your house in the winter?

Posted by Far_Shine6039@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 183 comments

Despite it being baltic in the UK. I've cleaned today and got all my windows and doors open I love the fresh air!

My wife likes to do it and I despise it. I'm very happy with my dehumidifiers on and not letting all the heat out. I get that it's a personal preference. My personal preference is to stew in my hoarded heat like a lizard.

Yes. Cold air and being naked and frozen half to death is incredibly invigorating and can kick start your immune system. You have to be completely naked though. The cold air covers your whole body for the best effect. Surprisingly you feel less cold than if you just take your top layer off. Weird I know. A few minutes is long enough and it’s so much more tolerable than a cold shower.

Ah ok that’s interesting thanks. Cold air seems more doable than cold water for me. Been looking into keto too which seems to lead to the same thing
View on Reddit #71959777

HorrorAccomplished78@reddit

Keto combined with intermittent fasting is a good health habit but really hard and needs a lot of discipline. Cold shock is easier but it all helps. I think lifestyle is the ultimate decider on health in a person without genetic problems. Google Doctor Berg on Facebook or YouTube. He has lots of tips.
View on Reddit #71962351

Accurate_Dot4385@reddit

Thank you. Yeah it does seem a lot more manageable. I wonder if keto keeps that state longer than cold shock. Perhaps it would be possible to test with the ketone strips. Then again it might not be good to be in autophagy all the time. Maybe that’s why we sleep best when it’s cooler because that time is the time we should be in that state.

Most houses aren't air tight anyway. Vents open above all windows circulates air all day long.

vents in windows aren't that common in the UK are they? I cant think of a house I've lived in that had them except for a small spinning one in a bathroom.
View on Reddit #71968382

JoeyJoeC@reddit

I know since 2022 homes have to have them, mine was built in 2000 and has them. My parents house is older and has them, but they were replaced at some point last 1990s or early 2000s. I don't remember much about the other houses I've lived in.
View on Reddit #71976479

never lived in a house that wasn't at least 60 or 70 years old, so I guess that tracks.
View on Reddit #71980578

dreamsonashelf@reddit

I can't imagine relying on that only for ventilation.
View on Reddit #71917678

JoeyJoeC@reddit

It's actually more than enough. 0.3l per second per vent, 16 vents = 17.28m³ per hour. That's about 2 air changes per day for a normal 3 bedroom house. Not including any other vents, such as bathroom / kitchen ventilation etc.
View on Reddit #71926196

faintsmellofcheese@reddit

I felt like it was a constant draught of cold air 24 hours a day which counteracted the heating. Now I’ve sealed up the vents and just do the German open windows thing once a day and the rooms are warm the rest of the time.

Trickle vents are more than enough now. 2 per room is good enough to replace the air twice a day.
View on Reddit #71926979

theevildjinn@reddit

I don't know why you're getting downvoted. We used to have really shitty old window frames. Metal ones, I think. They were always caked in mould, I'd have to clean them with bleach every few weeks. Then we got a house extension, and all the new windows had to have trickle vents due to building regs. So I asked the builder for a quote to replace all the existing frames, and it was a couple of grand. Seemed like a no-brainer, so now every window frame in the house is uPVC with a trickle vent. Since we had that done, the mould has never returned. No condensation either. My wife is from South America, and if I open a window at this time of year you'd think we were living in Antarctica or something, like 6 degrees Celsius outside is going to kill us all. The house isn't damp, or smelly. So it's either magic, or trickle vents.
View on Reddit #71947450

NovelShelter7489@reddit

I've noticed that, but as someone else said, they use a dehumidifier. Still get mould growing, probably my crappy 1950's house.

In your house’s defence it’s likely the plastic paints and non-permeable substances (eg concrete) that have been added over the years.
View on Reddit #71910198

Careful-Training-761@reddit

In honesty it's probably because there's not enough new fresh air circulating in and heating on high enough. It can be difficult to do though particularly in poorly insulated houses.
View on Reddit #71912884

Even with low heat a house that can breathe will do just that. If it can’t, all the heat in the world won’t help it

View on Reddit #71969977

evthrowawayverysad@reddit

Nope, and it's the dumbest thing to do. Your house is a thermal battery that you pay thousands to heat every year. By 'airing out' your house, you're essentially just wasting gas and money. Also, you're accomplishing not one iota of effective dehumidifying or oxygenation by doing this, but that shouldn't really be surprising, given that we live in one of the most humid countries on earth. Want to dehumidify your house? [Get a dehumidifier after watching this video.](https://youtu.be/j_QfX0SYCE8?si=XwlmQb1iQKTJ8Yaw).

Unless your house is airtight, this process happens by itself throughout the day. Grab a cheap Co2 monitor if you're concerned, but I think you'll find that 'stale' air is very expensive myth to buy into.

View on Reddit #71964440

kt1982mt@reddit

Yes. I wait until my kids are at school then I open all the windows and air out the house for an hour or so. It ends up being pretty cold in the house afterwards, but I really think it’s worthwhile to do it. I heat the house for the kids coming home from school, though.

martix_agent@reddit

View on Reddit #71914651

TinglingSensation42@reddit

If you don't do it humidity just keeps building and building and things end up damp. Moisture condenses on windows and mirrors, and cold spots on walls leading to damp and mould. Even stuff like spices and salt in your kitchen can cake up.

martix_agent@reddit

martix_agent@reddit

Ah, that explains why I don't have do do that here in the USA.
View on Reddit #71934775

bucketofardvarks@reddit

You don't have to that in the USA because your humid climates are also warm (see Florida) so you don't get the same condensation
View on Reddit #71962176

kt1982mt@reddit

It stops condensation, mould and just generally freshens up the air circulating around our home. It’s just a habit that I’m in. I’ve got central heating (gas boiler and radiators throughout the house), and a gas fire in the living room. It doesn’t take long to heat the house up.

I can't bear stuffy rooms with stale air so I air the house every morning. I also can't stand overheated houses . We lived in South Africa when I was little and the windows and doors were open most of the day. Even in winter we'd air the house for a few hours every day. It got hellish cold at night with frost but we never bothered with heating so I'm used to it and I still need a cold bedroom to sleep comfortably.
View on Reddit #71942500

JamsHammockFyoom@reddit

Yeah, we try and get them on the latch at least for some of the day - we live somewhere really windy so it forces the air into the house via the gaps. We turn the heating off just to save it screaming away, and then after half an hour shut them again and let the heat from the fabric of the house bring it back up before turning the heating back on again. I live in a really well sealed, well insulated house so it gets very stuffy, very quickly if you don't as the air is already warm as it is.

How so? Dehumidifier comes on for maybe 1 or 2 hours a day on average, maybe a bit longer when we put the washing out to dry. So 600W / day or 15p a day. How long are you keeping your heating on for? People don't seem to understand that trickle vents are more than enough, why is why they're required by building regulations now. Leave them all open, it will replace the air in your house 1 or 2 times per day.

View on Reddit #71931863

Outside_Penalty8094@reddit

I would hazard a guess that most don’t in the UK, but we ought to as it’s great for the health of your building in terms of getting all the humidity out. In Germany it’s part of the domestic ritual, like opening your curtains or locking the door, they call it “luften”.
View on Reddit #71905555

WestleyMc@reddit

Genuine question.. my bedroom is often at 70% humidity on the display with a ‘sad face’.. but outside the humidity is in the 80’s.. Does opening the windows reduce the room’s humidity in that instance?
View on Reddit #71925376

Unhappy_Clue701@reddit

Humidity levels are also temperature dependent. Warm air inside your house can hold a lot more water vapour than the cold outdoor air. So swapping your current hot damp air for cooler outdoor air will, once it has warmed back up, result in lower humidity indoors. Warming up air doesn’t take much heating, BTW. Swapping the air for colder outdoor air won’t take long to feel warm again, because the fabric of the building, furniture etc are all warm already, so the fresh air heats up quite quickly.
View on Reddit #71926647

Outside_Penalty8094@reddit

I will add to this very good explanation that lower humidity air feels less cold too. Since installing a PIV in my house, I’ve noticed that a room that was, say, 18c at 70-80% humidity feels the same as 16c at 55% humidity.

Warmer air can hold more water. 80% humidity at 10c is around 47% humidity at 20c. If you opened your windows and brought in outside air, you'd need to warm it back up in order to reduce the humidity.

Only after a bath/shower tbh. However, we'll go in and out of our various doors throughout the day as we take about 5 short walks per day, take things to the bins, go into the garage freezer, and other miscellaneous reasons. Our house is in the rarity though because besides our tiny en-suite and a bit behind one of our curtains due to a shot glass window, it's a very dry house. So much so we actually have to use the humidifier in the worst of winter as it's so dry that my husband's eczema gets worse and he's permanently staticky.

Yes otherwise the condensation runs down the windows and will lead to mould. And I don't have a dehumidifier, it's on my Christmas list.

Desperate-Coat-8791@reddit

Always, helps keep damp and mould at bay and fresh air is good for you. First thing in the morning I open the bedroom windows and let the old air out and new air in, why would I want to keep breathing all my sleepy musty air
View on Reddit #71905127

Hogmaloo25@reddit

The smell of the fresh air as you open the window after sleeping is the best
View on Reddit #71911147

Naidren@reddit

Yes at least 10 minutes
View on Reddit #71911145

xylophileuk@reddit

Yup after the family have all had their showers I’ll open up the upstairs windows for a while. Every day
View on Reddit #71910438

NobDeRiro@reddit

Yeah very often, at least 10 mins every morning and 10 mins at night
View on Reddit #71910153

NoCatch2153@reddit

Absolutely, we have at least half a dozen windows that are left ajar all year round. Luckily we have windows that lock open.
View on Reddit #71909477

MsWillmottsPoast@reddit

No, we have air purifiers in our main rooms instead. We’re outside a lot anyway to walk our dog so we get a lot of fresh air that way.
View on Reddit #71905482

Boggyprostate@reddit

It’s not the fresh air for you, it’s more for the house. Home purifiers are not going to cut it. Just Google why you should open windows everyday and how it prevents mould spurs.

JoeyJoeC@reddit

I dont get any mould and I dont open all my doors and windows every day. I run 2 air purifiers, a dehumidifier and have the vents above the windows open. I have no issues with mould.
View on Reddit #71909056

MsWillmottsPoast@reddit

I have double-glazed windows, central heating and a log burner. We don’t have issues with condensation but if there were somehow mold spores in my house then they would be caught in the HEPA filters in my air purifiers.

OzzyinKernow@reddit

Of course, or mould will develop. Min 20 mins a day, pref longer
View on Reddit #71908769

Nublar_Repair_Man@reddit

Open the windows 10-15 minutes every morning when I wake up, and occasionally during the day if I feel stuffy.

Every morning for 15-30 mins all windows, doors open..kitchen window stays open all night after bedtime...

Yes, I *luft* regularly.
View on Reddit #71907234

rako1982@reddit

I luft every day to help with mould build up. Frankly I trust the Germans on this.
View on Reddit #71907622

urban_shoe_myth@reddit

Yep. Not every door and window every day, but 2 kitchen windows, main bathroom, and bedroom are opened every day regardless of weather when we get up. Others as and when we think it's necessary. 3 cats and a dog can get stinky quickly if there's no air through.
View on Reddit #71907589

rapturans@reddit

Certainly try to. Have heard it's not actually that in efficient heat wise as most of your central heating goes to heating up the solid home itself, not the high moisture air. So replacing it with cold but dry air helps.
View on Reddit #71906967

Alternative-Bee2962@reddit

Yeah I open all the top windows and let the place have a good airing for about 20 minutes a day and living in a small bungalow doesn't take a long time and I have a dehumidifier going constantly just to take any dampness out of the place.
View on Reddit #71906264

DragonEagle88@reddit

I’d open them more if the neighbours weren’t trying to constantly pollute me with their wood burners on still days. But yes, I typically have my bedroom window open at night and then open bathrooms every time we’ve used them and then other rooms every couple of days if it feels damp.

I haven't shut my bedroom window in years

I can tolerate cold quite well but your bath and bedroom must be absolutely baltic in jan/feb to the point that any water pipes might be in danger of getting damaged.
View on Reddit #71905702

DrMacAndDog@reddit

You have to. Otherwise damp and smelly.

View on Reddit #71905720

Yep every morning for 10-30mins. Today I did about 20mins. All windows open, all doors open. It keeps the humidity down. Eg before opening windows on Thursday the humidity was around 68% after window opening, it dropped to 42%
View on Reddit #71905665

Equivalent_Read@reddit

Absolutely. Lots don’t though. I’ve found I get way less mould since I started about 3 years ago.
View on Reddit #71905541

minxorcist@reddit

Yes. The cat gets the hump, but I leave the bedroom, bathroom, and living room windows open for a good ten minutes in the morning.
View on Reddit #71905508

iMac_Hunt@reddit

I have my bedroom window slightly open pretty much all year, with the heating on of course. This isn’t popular with some
View on Reddit #71905496

Yes. I have cats so it's a need. Cat smell and heating on constantly would not be a great combo!
