How often do you get a takeaway?
Posted by Lozzybops@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 284 comments
I’m so curious how many times is “normal” to get a takeaway or any form of food made for you.
Do you have a weekly family take away night? Do you get McDonald’s or similar whenever you’re on a long drive? Do you actively limit yourself on how many takeaways you’re allowed to have or just order something when you fancy it?
I feel like I get takeaway soo often and feel guilty for it but then I think, is it that bad?
koruppi@reddit
I live alone and, never. My “takeaway” would be a frozen pizza if the one I like is reduced at Tesco so maybe once a month if that. But my partner will vist me one weekend a month and we’ll eat out maybe twice then. So overall, meals out twice a month. I home cook all my food.
NormasCherryPie@reddit
A couple of times a year. Why not just learn to cook things that are both delicious and fast, and go out for dinner once a month or so instead?
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
I think for me and a lot of people it’s the time and mental energy/preparation that it takes, ie the ingredients the planning the decision making the cooking itself. It can be hard at the end of a long day. I am an excellent cook but actually doing that every day is not enjoyable
NormasCherryPie@reddit
I hear you, and I think it can take a bit of work to get to the place where there’s not all that mental friction.
I’ve been cooking since I was tiny, so I just chop an onion and make it up as I go most of the time based on what I have (and know how to swap thing x for thing y to get the same texture/flavour profile etc), but that takes practice, confidence and experience with a kind of make do and mend attitude. I grew up watching 90s cooking shows which taught you how to do that (can recommend Delia and Ready Steady Cook on YouTube to learn how to just cook on vibes.) I also grew up in a house where takeaway wasn’t a thing - everything was cooked from scratch - so it’s also a habit.
The availability of so much convenience must be a disincentive to learn how to just ‚make do’ because you have to, like I did for a long time.
When really busy I find planning meals for the week is a boon. Sitting down for 15 mins on a Sunday before shopping and writing a list. It means easier shopping, no waste, no decisions, less fuss, and almost everything takes 25 mins or less from more or less scratch.
To be honest, the main factor is probably price, though. One takeaway could pay for so much of a weekly shop. I’d rather go out for dinner and someone else can do the washing up!
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
Yeah I hear you. When a good system is in place it’s much easier
NormasCherryPie@reddit
It definitely takes time to get the process, but it does save money and can be good for health long term. If it’s something you want to do, you can do it! Little steps, lots of practice. Just like learning how to be a gym person or getting your steps or drinking water. At the start it’s active, but eventually it’s just another almost mindless habit thing like brushing your teeth.
CosetElement-Ape71@reddit
It's only a lot of time, mental energy/preparation and getting ingredients if you're not very comfortable with cooking. My wife loves my spaghetti carbonara ... mainly because it only takes 10 mins to make one! Batch cooking and reheating is another great timesaver
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
I am comfortable cooking, I’m good at throwing things together and I have lots of experience. I’m just too exhausted
maelie@reddit
We've been through phases. Skint couple, practically never. Got a bit more income and it became a treat. Got busy in life and it became regular. Had first baby, and it was an occasional necessity when I hadn't sorted my batch cooking effectively. Baby started eating food, back to cooking everything because it was right for him to have home cooked food. As he grew up, it became a treat again that he could also participate in. Second baby came. Lots of health issues and enormous stress happened over the first year. Lots of takeaways because honestly I couldn't keep up with shopping let alone cooking. It was too many takeaways without doubt. Second baby started solids but she has allergies and the toddler has issues so I was cooking potentially 3 separate things per meal. So there were takeaways. A lot of takeaways but yet also a heck of a lot of cooking - worst of all worlds in some ways but seriously struggled.
Just starting to get back into reduced takeaways now we have a few things everyone can eat. But oh lord are we bored of lentil & veg bolognese over and over!
I will pay the money for a takeaway (within reason) for the time saving and mental energy saving. But concerned about the health implications so well only have a "dirty"/comfort takeaway every so often. We're lucky that we have a bunch of decent takeaways nearby that do proper food, properly cooked. There are reasonably healthy options available to us. I'm super conscious of UHPFs especially for the toddler so I am quite selective.
One thing that is helpful is Cook frozen meals (you can order online or get from some retailers) - always feels a bit expensive and indulgent but actually cheaper than a takeaway and I usually just cook up some veg on the side rather than buying their sides. That's working while I'm still doing something separate for the youngest but her allergy combination make choices limited and not necessarily compatible with what my son will eat... so I'm still having to cook a bit alongside... if I didn't have these complications we'd be doing it all the time! It's worth looking into to help wean off the takeaway habit IMO.
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
This makes a lot of sense! I’ve got a toddler and a baby and I’m relying on takeaways a lot because of the time/mental energy like you said. It serves us for a season.
Khidorahian@reddit
once a week.
Junior_Syrup_1036@reddit
Rather go to M&S and spend £30-40 on food and a few drinks than takeaways , you'd be surprised what you can get for what you'd usually spend on one.
FancyAd3942@reddit
Sure but I’ll save more and go to Tesco 😂
Some_Ad6507@reddit
The picky bits 😍
Relative_Sea3386@reddit
I like M&S but do feel sad for independent food businesses and any human/family who wants a break and fresh chef-cooked food every now and again.
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
You’re right. I must do this more
Which_Specific9891@reddit
They have so many meal deals and most of the time it's at least as decent quality as the take-away.
plongeronimo@reddit
People don't buy takeaways for the quality.
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
I often get a wagamamas and find that to be really yummy and quality, even our local Chinese adds lots of veggies and is fresh compared to others
HAMforPastry@reddit
Three takeaways near me that are known for high quality food. My family and friends use them every now and again as a treat due to the high quality
Prestigious-Age-3644@reddit
Some do, we have lovely homemade curries often but we havnt got a patch on the tandoori house up the road. They know how to mix and blend spices and cook curry much better than we can
Which_Specific9891@reddit
The last take-away order on my phone is June 2025. I'd honestly just rather make food at home or get meal deals from places like M&S. They taste better and they're cheaper.
Junior_Syrup_1036@reddit
Better quality for sure , most takeaways are just generic
Which_Specific9891@reddit
I think that's definitely true. On the rare occasion I would order out, it was sushi and our sushi restaurants were quite high quality. But they've both closed. So the food I make at home and the M&S meal deals are just better quality than the junk I would order.
IntelligentActuary86@reddit
I 2nd this. I swapped takeouts/eating out for shopping more bougie. I go m&S or Waitrose and buy quick dinners i.e marinated salmon, baked sweet potato. Done! I have been feeling so much better for financially and health wise.
I also get frozen cooked meals from this company called Chef Akila. It's Indian meals, so depends if you like that cuisine. 500g curry costs me £13.95 which turns into 2/3 meals. Comes frozen, lasts for 6mth and takes 8mins in the microwave I make my own rice or bread to go alongside it.
Hightimetoclimb@reddit
You have it with hoose rice?
Prestigious-Age-3644@reddit
Haha thats a belter
IntelligentActuary86@reddit
hahahaha 🤣. In this cost living crisis unfortunately yes, but one day I'll order the rice, one day!
Ornery-Vehicle-2458@reddit
This is what we do, for two reasons;
• We live out in the sticks, and there are no takeaways. None of the delivery providers come out here.
• Quality / Quantity / Variety is better from M&S, Waitrose, Sainsbury's etc.
FancyAd3942@reddit
A take a way probably every other month maybe less. Including like McDonald’s and pubs for just dinner maybe once every 2/3 weeks
meg147@reddit
The standard of takeaway food has declined over the last few years, so no longer a treat but a convenience, for when you can’t be bothered to cook or simply don’t have time. Be lucky if I have 2 a year, they’re just not worth the calories for the cost and often cheap nasty ingredients. Even the big corps like MacDs etc. is all about shrink-flation, squeezing as much as they can for a very in return.
CantaloupeAway7125@reddit
Two of us - used to be once a week now once a month. Miss fish and chips Friday but its got ridiculously expensive. Our Chinese order went from £25ish to £35 in last 18 months. Luckily I'm a good cook and enjoy coming up with meal ideas.
SporkiePie@reddit
Couple. We get a takeaway on average over the year about once per month. It’s either KFC or Papa Johns. Fish and chips is maybe once a year, and done when having family over.
We eat out at a restaurant on average once every 2-3 months. For a special occasion that might be somewhere like Miller and Carter. For something more impromptu, or a date night it’s probably somewhere more like Zizzis.
We meal plan our dinners for the fortnight ahead, and our food shop is planned based off that, so we always have a home cooked meal planned. Eating out more would be lovely, but when it’s £50-£100 per time for a restaurant or £20-£30 for a takeaway, more often isn’t really feasible.
nataliawas6@reddit
We (28F, 31M) tend to order every weekend bc we just cba to cook and want a little reward after a tough week. It’s just something we always did. Used to be way more at uni haha
About once a month we would go out to eat with friends but that’s usually spoons as it’s the cheapest lol but we have a baby now and are trying (and failing so far) to not order as much but the kebab demons are calling me every night haha
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
The kebab demons!! :’) yeah it’s the reward after the tough week. Or a good week. Or a week
booroms@reddit
McDonald's? Fuck off. They take the absolute piss with their prices these days. Big mac meal used to be alright for under a fiver but now it's a tenner and you can get something much much nicer for that money
YorkshireMary@reddit
I get a few a week if To Good To Go is included.
CantSing4Toffee@reddit
Hardly ever. We have a really really good homemade Italian takeaway nearby, they used to have a restaurant and takeaway but had to close the restaurant due to high running costs. The takeaway only is great homemade quality.
I can’t recall the last time we had a fish & chips or Thai.
Polythene_pams_bag@reddit
Once a month just me and the hubby kids are grown now
sniffing_dog@reddit
I used to get takeaways regularly but the standards have dropped so much, I just spend £8 on a small fish, small chips and curry sauce on a Friday night. It's good quality fish n chips and I enjoy it more than a £20 Indian or Chinese takeaway.
Milotiiic@reddit
Kebab / pizza maybe once a fortnight
A Maccies / BK / KFC everytime I hop on a motorway
booky456@reddit
Hopefully you’re not a commuter
Milotiiic@reddit
Luckily not - super rural and go on the motorway maybe 3-4 times a year
DollySheep32@reddit
A trip on the motorway isn't complete without chips
Some_Ad6507@reddit
I’ve never really bothered. Once every 3 or 4 months
No-Quality-369@reddit
Never. Growing up my family never lived anywhere near a place that delivers. Now I see it as expensive and low quality
1182990@reddit
It used to be every Friday, and at the weekends we'd eat out 2-3 times.
Now we buy lunch from Greggs on a Saturday (kids have classes in town), have a takeaway maybe 1-2 times a month.
We stopped off at Itsu for lunch in town the other week and it cost £80 for a family of four, which I find absolutely staggering, so won't be doing that again unless it's a special occasion.
Everything is just so expensive now.
Jiminyfingers@reddit
Went to a country pub just me and my brother. 2 burgers and fries and 2 soft drinks came to £46
corobo@reddit
Country pub charged me a fiver for a Pepsi max lol
Should have grabbed a 2l on the way there
buffalosoldier111@reddit
I got charged £4.05 for a pint of blackcurrant cordial and tap water
fourthaccountlucky@reddit
What the actual fuck
buffalosoldier111@reddit
I know, I should have got a pint
do_you_realise@reddit
The first time we went out for food post-Covid we took our 6 year old for curry on a whim, for 2 adults and a kids portion curry came to £76, was gobsmacked. Thought it was going to be about 40 quid
AWingedVictory1@reddit
I can imagine. Easy to rack up £80 there. Quite unfortunate but so tasty
IAmLaureline@reddit
You spent £80 for four people in itsu? How?!
Unhappy_Clue701@reddit
What the hell did you get from Itsu? I get lunch there sometimes, the ‘salmon full house’ is a decent adult size lunch even for a fat fuck like me, and is about £11 even right inside the Square Mile in London.
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
I reckon it’s all the side bits, gyozas and stuff that adds up
Normal-Grapefruit851@reddit
How in the name of the wee man did you manage to spend £80 at Itsu??
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
£80 that’s wild!! I do fear I’ll have to cut down massively once my kids aren’t babies anymore.
hostis_72@reddit
💯
Far-Hospital-9961@reddit
Weekly usually.
adequatemum@reddit
Once in a blue moon I will have fish and chips, it's more frequent in the summer when we go to the seaside and I cba to make a packup
fourthaccountlucky@reddit
I spent £62 on an Indian for 2 tonight (kids are away). Tbf I'll be eating it for the next two days...
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
I always spend tons on a Chinese but end up eating the leftovers for at least 2 more meals. So divided by3 meals isn’t so bad
BenchClamp@reddit
Twice a week. Fish and chips on Monday. And whatever we fancy on Friday night - usually ramen
headline-pottery@reddit
Family -
Pizza - once every 2 months.
Burger - if we are at a services or cinema - again about once every 2 months.
Fish & Chips - special treat - twice a year or so.
Curry - special treat - twice a year or so.
Cost and health means that if at home there is almost always a cheaper and healthier alternative.
Pete_Iredale@reddit
Would you mind telling me what "a services" means in this context? To my American brain it sounds like a service station, aka a gas/petrol station, but I'm not sure that's what you mean.
headline-pottery@reddit
A Services is a rest stop on usually on a motorway (Interstate) or other major road. They have a Petrol Station selling unbelievably expensive petrol, and food/shopping area with things like a McD's/Burger King/KFC, a Starbucks or local equivalent like Costa, a small newsagents / shop and maybe a small grocery store (also very expensive). There might be a Motel of some sort on site, a childrens play area, EV chargers. Some even have lakes! Here is one example (https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g190819-d8000774-Reviews-Welcome_Break_Keele_Services_M6-Newcastle_under_Lyme_Staffordshire_England.html)
Pete_Iredale@reddit
Ahh, that makes sense. We have rest stops like that on some of the toll freeways in the east, so you don't have to leave the toll road and then reenter to get gas and/or food. They aren't really a thing in the western half of the country though. Thanks!
CMR1891@reddit
Services are service stations on the motorways (highways), but instead of just petrol (gas) stations, they tend to have a few shops as well and some fast food shops/coffee shops on the premises, sometimes even a small amusement arcade and toilets/showers
Neffwood@reddit
It's mad that fish and chips are a special treat. It's a working class staple.
headline-pottery@reddit
Not at £60 for 4 it aint - vs the quantity of food I can cook at home for that much. Being able to cook really is a modern day superpower.
CMR1891@reddit
£60 for 4 fish and chips 😮 that’s scandalous. Chippy is the cheap option when I can’t be bothered to cook. It’s just a little over a fiver per meal near me!
headline-pottery@reddit
£5 for Fish and Chips? Where do you live? The 1980s?
CMR1891@reddit
Lancashire. Just over £5 for a small, about £7.50 for a large
SirLostit@reddit
This is my argument. I can generally cook better at home for a fraction of the price.
I’m currently smoking 4 racks of pork ribs on a smoker in the garden. Total cost £17. Chuck in a few sides and you’ve got very tasty meal.
NoContract1090@reddit
Who could have possibly forseen printing billions upon billions of pounds during covid would lead to inflation and rising costs? When has printing money ever led to that??
Primary-Angle4008@reddit
Family of 4: once a week on Fridays, we usually go to the same take away. Costs us about £30 for the 4 of us. Rest of the week we cook however we batch cook and freeze a lot so in reality we cook around twice a week, freeze some and have the rest over the next couple of days and then have some freezer meals as well
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
Realistically I want to do exactly this
jon080984@reddit
Would rather eat in at a restaurant, uber eats etc kill them with fees and no cleaning up. Good for the kids too going to different places

Cloughiepig@reddit
I do a 600 mile round trip about every three weeks to see my ageing parents, and sometimes get a Maccy’s or KFC on one way (my mum might pack me off with a sandwich on the way back). At the very least I will get an overpriced coffee.

whenever my mum had a shit day at work and didn't want dad to cook normal healthy food.

Ok-Committee9283@reddit
Family of 4. Ones a toddler and the other is a baby. Once every 3/4 months? It’s not really our vibe and they tend to be so greasy now we get belly ache. We’re a coffee and a cake family I guess when out and about. I find takeaways expensive and toddler doesn’t eat them. Our takeaway of choice is normally a large pizza and maybe a garlic bread shared between the 3 of us with a side salad (yes we are that family). I do love the Sainsburys pizza meal deal and the Sains 3 for £8 on picky bits for a treat.
Demostravius4@reddit
Used to be multiple times a week, but we've dropped a lot, mostly once a week, although the past month we've dropped to less and started buying an equivilent from the shop.
Zealousideal_Pop3121@reddit
Once a month at most. My husband is out of work at the moment and I’m a TA so funds are super tight so we haven’t had one for ages.
Background_Bug1102@reddit
Maybe 2/3 times a year. I can cook a bit and a lot of take aways are a massive disappointment. I’ll have a proper Indian meal occasionally. The stuff like McDonalds just doesn’t interest me at all. A lot of “pub grub” style restaurants are similarly disappointing and absurdly expensive, so I can’t get excited about it.

Once a week normally, on a Wednesday
TrashcanDev@reddit
There's nothing inherently wrong about getting take out.
It';; depends on balancing your expenses versus your income; it can be easy to loose track of how much your spending on that versus just cooking yourself.
It depends on health needs. Cooking for yourself might be better, but there may be cases where you have needs that can only be filled by takeout. On the other hand, getting McD's 25 days out of the month, probaly not helping.
It depends on your available time. Cooking is also a time committment - if you don't have the time to make breakfast and dinner, takeout is a valid option. Same as if you are exhausted and don't have the energy.
It depends on goals - if you're a bodybuilder, you're probably gonna want to be more attentive to your calories.
As long as you're healthy and have good relationship with food, that's normal for you as an individual
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
I appreciate this answer and totally agree. It’s a personal balance
TrashcanDev@reddit
Oh, I will add on before anyone else might comment:
Just because your situation now might be normal, doesn't mean it must remain so. There are also valid reasons to change what is normal if you so wish. Maybe you realize that you're gaining unwanted weight - it's okay to make adjustments and re-define normal for yourself. Maybe you get a big promotion and suddenly can afford a fancy meal once a month - treat yo self, if you wish, and don't feel guilty for doing so.
uoethrowaway@reddit
1 or 2 times a year but I usually regret it because they're shite.
GrossFatSlob@reddit
Never as on a diet.
uncleanwhispers@reddit
2-3 times a year
BorderlineWire@reddit
Couple, no children. It really depends on work.
If we’re doing a late finish with overtime, we’re starting at 7am and finishing any time between 9 and 11. Sometimes we do that regularly sometimes rarely but with those, they’re always followed with a takeaway (usually McDonald’s because it’s still open) because I’m not cooking after that.
If I’m working somewhere that isn’t my usual site where I go home for lunch then I’ll grab something out.
Otherwise it’s one take away a week, I’ve just ordered us a Chinese. We will occasionally go for a roast or a brunch on Sunday. Our local does a really good reasonably priced roast and it’s not like I can can cook my own at home at the moment, I’m waiting for some repairs to be done in our kitchen which sort of limits both space and facilities.
Hightimetoclimb@reddit
About once a week. My wife and I are child free and in our early 40s. We get hello fresh delivered and that covers 5 of our weekly dinners, we have done this for the last 7 years, we generally go to my mum’s for dinner on a Sunday, so we have one “cheat night” a week which is a takeout night. Usually burger, pizza or fried chicken.
Efficient_Tear8142@reddit
Very similar to us, we have a cheat 'day' and within that day have a takeaway! Lol

Not me but my old housemate , 8-10 times a week. Would include maccies breakfast, luxury milkshakes, and snack orders through the day, then in the evening, would be up to 8 large pizzas at a time, numerous sides, plus desserts. Originally I was a bit shocked but thought yk, not my issue, assumed they must know lots of coupons and deals. About two months before I moved out I learnt no, no deals, infact in the four months prior there was a total of £1.4k spent on their deliveroo account, they had £900 debt on Klarna. Absolute madness to watch, especially as they always did food shops, had countless things in the fridge, freezer and cupboard (which they would also eat)
JeevestheGinger@reddit
I racked up £400 with klarna on Deliveroo... dangerous. I have a raging binge/purge eating disorder and really struggle with delivery apps. Sounds like your old housemate has an ED too.

Yep. It really is that sodding expensive for much smaller portions.

Depends on your definition of takeaway. The traditional ones (Chinese, curry, pizza, fish and chips) it's probably about once a month (was once a week for a while, but it was too expensive). We do hello fresh 5 times a week and then let the kids pick beige foods for the other two 😅 However, I do order breakfast from Costa once a week at the weekend and order lunch from coffee shops a couple of times a week too, so if that counts, it's more frequent.

Cook from scratch each night for 2 adults and 2 kids. Of course, there is the odd oven chip meal, but we cook from scratch most of the time
Electronic-Bus-5350@reddit
A few times a week and now I am fat
msmoth@reddit
Hardly ever! I guess we'd go out for food more often than we'd get takeaway to eat at home. We don't do a lot of work related travelling and for non-work travel we'd default to some sort of sandwich or salad rather than McD's etc.
CatsChat@reddit
We tend to eat out at a fast food place on a Sunday lunch, we almost never get takeaways at home - it’s a big treat to get a fish and chips on a Friday once in a blue moon, usually for something celebratory. Family of 2 adults, one child.
Prestigious-Age-3644@reddit
Maybe once every couple of months or so we have a curry and in the summer maybe once a month fish and chips as the weather makes us crave it =)
That's only evening meals though, if we are including lunch that numbers goes up a lot as we are fond of grabbing meal deals to eat outside so id say maybe twice a week for lunch once every couple of months for an evening meal otherwise we cook or make what we eat at home the majority of the time
Hancri84@reddit
Once a week, recently cut down from 2 to 3 times a week
m1_ab@reddit
More frequent now than it used to be, but still probably only once every couple of months. Once a month at most.
We're a family of four, my brother and I (age 20 & 21) living at home with our parents.
Secure-Property4926@reddit
Given that the apps have taken over and can add about seven quid to an order it’s pushed it into ‘is it worth it?’ Territory. I can afford it but value is so poor I’d rather not. Feels like money down the drain. Anyway we do get a Thai or Indian say once a month as the kids enjoy it.
HugsandHate@reddit
Once a month minimum limit, but it's usually longer than that.
Potsysaurous@reddit
Every couple of weeks. Honestly so much depends on my cycle lol
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
I’m with you there
Xxrai_N_mai01xX@reddit
Growing up in my family, it was maybe twice a year we would do a takeaway. Then as we got a bit older in secondary school, mcdonalds and pizza became more regular. Then as a young adult, I became totally addicted. Especially once I got my own income, I was ordering multiple times a day!
Tried to cut down, and was sometimes successful, but found it hard and could never really stop. Eventually got into a financial situation where it was no longer affordable at all so stopped completely. Been avoiding it, but I think 1x a week or fortnight (e.g. chinese on a friday, or pizza every 2 fridays) is totally fine just as a treat. Occasionally, I do get the odd craving in the month but if I really want it, I'll aim to go out and collect rather than order in. And usually on a day where I know I'm already going to be out and busy.
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
I relate to you soooo much. Being not really allowed it as a child has made me go off the rails as an adult essentially
Xxrai_N_mai01xX@reddit
Its really hard to kick honestly i think people need to talk about takeaway addiction more. Its not just a food addiction, its also the ease of having everything at the tip of your fingers with all these apps. Back in the day, you at least had to call up and go out to collect it (i know eventually more places started offering delivery but still applied to most local joints).
Its also a dopamine thing i think as well. And its hard because people think its a case of not knowing how to cook. But ive always loved cooking and i knew it saved me so much more money, but there was some sort of habit-aspect to my ordering. Im glad i got into a situation that forced me to cook everything myself and use up all whats left in the house without a choice of my own. But it is really hard
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
1000% a dopamine thing. I think often food/takeaway can feel like it’s the only dopamine accessible. That’s really interesting, i totally agree and never heard anybody else speak about it.
Xxrai_N_mai01xX@reddit
Yeah i definitely noticed an uptick in ordering when stress or depression was bad. It was how i was coping, by getting instant access to yummy things. Thats where the ordering multiple times a day would come from. Id be full and upset i spent like 20 on a mcdonalds order, then 3 hours later id be back on the app to order lunch
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
I feel you yep for me it’s been a coping mechanism for me at my hardest periods in life.
CreativeAdeptness477@reddit
Single, and never.
Don't need to order in when I can throw some stuff in my little halogen oven air fryer thing and leave it for 15 to 20. That's quicker and more reliable than any takeaway and there's no risk of it getting stolen by the delivery guy or delivered to the wrong address or eaten by foxes on my doorstep or being cold after it takes thrice as long to arrive as expected, and probably a lot cheaper too.
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)
Wow that’s a lot of things that might go wrong, quite unlikely though!
Professional-Farm372@reddit
We live deep in the countryside so rarely get a takeaway as we're not in anyone's delivery area. But we do go out to eat most weekends. Especially if we're out walking the dog etc
anonymous-nyx@reddit
Used to get at least 1 a week.. sometimes more. But with how expensive everything's getting takeaways are becoming more of a luxury.. at least for me
Bumblebee-Bzzz@reddit
Pretty similar for me, every Friday but sometimes in the week too depending on how busy I was. Quality has seriously dropped though so barely have it anymore as it's always disappointing.
anonymous-nyx@reddit
Yeah especially McDonald's, I'll get it maybe 3 times a year, I go so long between having it and out of nowhere will crave it only to be utterly disappointed.. but I never learn lol, probably get one again in 2 or 3 months and be just as disappointed again
Bumblebee-Bzzz@reddit
I haven't been for a few years when it was pushing £40 for 4 of us. It used be be cheap and convenient, not the case anymore. I can make much better burgers and chips at home for a fraction of the cost.
anonymous-nyx@reddit
Yeah McDonald's is definitely not cheap anymore. I'd rather spend an extra 5r and get 2 or 3 dishes from the Chinese. Also home made burgers if made with good quality ingredients are unmatched
WildWinterberry@reddit
The quality is getting so bad too now because the owners are having to cut corners to keep costs down
Phoenyx_wilson@reddit
Once a month when I get paid I use what is left over from last payday for treats, this month that is £27 so I brought myself one of the new kfc drinks and some skin care and now I have £10 left to treat myself later in the week to a whole roast chicken and a fresh baguette.
R05579@reddit
Nowadays maybe 2 or 3 times a month, too expensive... Going back 5 years ago it was probably 5 or 6 times a month.
Beautypaste@reddit
Don’t buy take away anymore, can’t afford them with the cost of everything rising. Can barely afford to heat my home and I work 40+ hour a week.
DirtyDebz@reddit
Usually on a Tuesday night, just for convenience because we (me and fiancé) go out and I usually from somewhere that has an offer on
Unhappy_Clue701@reddit
Very rarely. Wife is coeliac, which immediately knocks out a lot of the common takeaway options. For a quick and easy meal similar to a takeaway, we tend to pick up a higher end ready meal from M&S. Even then, it’s maybe once every couple of months.
We do occasionally get a takeaway curry (a lot of Indian food is GF anyway) but our local good one is a proper restaurant and is quite expensive. You can very easily spend close to £50 on a meal for two, by the time you’ve got two mains, some rice, saag aloo, naan bread for me, and so on. It is bloody good though - the restaurant is always busy, even on a random week night.
Lost_Haaton@reddit
Pre corvid maybe every fortnight, now... Maybe can afford it once every other month. Couple with a mortgage.
Salty-Value8837@reddit
I stopped order take out and delivery when it cost me a weeks worth of grocery money to feed 4 of us once.
lookhereisay@reddit
Birthdays and anniversary for a takeaway.
Once a month ish my husband and I get a nice M&S dinner just for us.
Free_Ad7415@reddit
Single and about once a month.
I’m coeliac so it’s really hard to find stuff though,my maccies order is chips, lettuce, and coffee.
Or I get fish n chips delivered which costs £30 (for one person!!!)
adamlbrown3@reddit
A takeaway, maybe a few times a year. They're just not worth the money, I can make better for myself.
We eat in the pub every few weeks though
Sad_Introduction8995@reddit
We started buying a pack of burgers and some oven chips and fixed our cold food deliveroo habit.
Stefgrep66@reddit
Very rarely eat takeaway, I can't stomach it. I tend to feel how I eat these days, just leaves me bloated and farty!!
Top_Opening_3625@reddit
We probably do takeaway once every couple of weeks or more if we’re ill or super busy. However it’s always such a long wait, super expensive and not that good that it never feels worth it. We do eat on average once a week or a bit less.
Remote_Atmosphere993@reddit
About 6 times a year.
Yasgar69@reddit
Every Friday night mostly a Chinese , but now and then a Bhuna or Rogan Josh instead
Careless-Cooker@reddit
Less and less and the price goes up and up.
ginger_lucy@reddit
On average it’s less than once a month. Can be more often if we’re ill or super busy at work, but then we’ll go months without. Which means I’m even more shocked at how much they cost each time!
Couple in our 40s for your demographics.
humanityisdyingfast@reddit
Usually only on birthdays or special occasions, but we prefer to eat out so maybe around 2x a year at a minimum
Fibro-Mite@reddit
Once minimum up to twice a month maximum. At home it's either the local chippy (best in the area), KFC or chinese, occasionally pizza.
When we go on holiday within the UK (we alternate years with a self-catering UK holiday and a Med cruise) we'll usually have two or three takeaways a week depending on what's available.
When we still had young children at home, we had a takeaway once a week, but not really on a set night. Just whatever fit our combined schedules best. It has always been allowed for in our budget as its own line item under the principle of "budget some small luxuries first".
Resident-Gear2309@reddit
Used to be twice a week, traded it in for Gousto though
Same_Statistician747@reddit
Only a very occasional treat like a birthday. Well stop at services for something on a very long drive. Even then, I’ll let the children have a meal deal, I’ll just have a coffee.
throwaway173585@reddit
as a teenager it was once a month when my parents got paid, as an adult myself usually only special occasions (birthdays and such) or if its been a particularly horrible day (having to go to hospital, an extremely difficult day at work). i’d say about 5 times a year total
Shot-Disk5958@reddit
Probably once a week on average, maybe twice if it’s been a rough week or I can’t be bothered cooking. I think it’s way more common for single people since we don't really have to think of other people's schedule
anabsentfriend@reddit
About two years ago I think. I'm vegan and none of the Chinese or Indian takeaways do anything vegan here. Domino's used to do an OK pizza, but they've changed them and they're awful now.
Peskycat42@reddit
Old retired person, maybe once a year. Having said that, I dont think its ever been much more than that.
My single late 20s son, maybe once a week, but cost is making it less
Far-Sir-825@reddit
Used to be roughly weekly, now roughly monthly. Similar for eating out. Have a pub serving very good standards nearby but in 18 months Fish & Chips for instance has gone from £13 to £18. I know the owners well and know it isn’t profiteering, hospitality is on it’s arse at the moment.
TwpMun@reddit
Single man, it probably averages out to about every other week. If I fancy one i'll get one, I don't really think about it.
Efficient_Hyena_7476@reddit
Once or twice a month. Used to be weekly, before prices rose.
matweat@reddit
Every now and then when I can’t be bothered to cook/it’s convenient when travelling. I don’t limit it because we aren’t struggling financially but also I am always disappointed. I prefer my own cooking
Resipsa100@reddit

LordJebusVII@reddit
Single, once a month ideally. Will sometimes have 2 but never more than that. I don't have a set limit but I do use an app since I don't drive and seeing that my last order was less than a month ago is usually enough to convince me to cook something instead
MzHmmz@reddit
We generally try not to have more than 1 takeaway a week, and when we do get takeaway it's usually because we're busy and don't have time to cook, or too knackered or whatever, it's not really a routine thing. Sometimes we'll go a few weeks without a takeaway, sometimes (usually during periods of stress or illness) it will average out at slightly more than 1 per week.
Little_st4r@reddit
Usually every Friday. We dont spend nearly as much as some people in this thread are saying but then we tend to go to independents rather than chains and we dont order more than we need/huge portion sizes
ChaseboundGames@reddit
Way too often the last few months
Historical_Project86@reddit
We never get McDonalds. We may get a pizza maybe 10 times a year, could be less, though the last 2 pizzas we've had have been awful. Pizza Hut's new default crust is pants, and as a vegan I was forced to get Domino's with a thin crispy crust which was just an insult.
Which_Specific9891@reddit
I haven't had McDs since I was a very small child. The smell just walking past McDs makes me feel ill.

Depends what's normal to you, I used to order breakfast, lunch and tea everyday because it was normal to me, now I might have 1 once a month on one of the weekends. Eventually you get bored of the same shit, plus save a load of money.
Don't get me wrong I know ordering 3 times a day wasn't normal but at the time it felt it so I guess it is what feels normal at the time. I'm disabled so that's part of the reason why I did but now I have people to help me cook i think what the hell was I doing.
Lozzybops@reddit (OP)

Anything over an hour is "long".

Family of 3 here. Never got takeaway before having the kid - now we have fish and chips / kebab once every two weeks after the kid's swimming lesson - also we have Burger King when stopping for food on long journeys and will go out of our way to avoid other brands.
When I was a student I would get chips or a kebab after a night out occasionally, but only very occasionally. Eating out was expensive 25 years ago and it's only got worse.

We have a street in Sheffield (London Road) where takeaways are typically £8-10. I eat takeaways here 3-4 times per week. In the chip shop near my house ig cost us £70 for a family of four. I wont be doing that again.
mahki25942@reddit
Almost daily. Eating home cooked food is an occasion for me
terryjuicelawson@reddit
Probably once a week. Tend to get ones for home that do a good portion with leftovers like a Chinese or Indian. When on the road a McDonalds is often a lunch choice as you can break up a journey and sit down. Do like a pasty too.
HirsuteHacker@reddit
Once or twice a month

I’m trying to cut down. Used to be end of the week treat, now every other week. Will soon be once a month. I’ve started putting the average cost of a takeaway into my ISA when I don’t get one. It’s all adding up.

Situational, I aim for 1 a week, it’s all down to funds, if I’m rich and I can’t be arsed to cook then 2-3 times. If I’m poor then it’s freezer food for dinner (I can make fake-aways and I have loads of homemade meals frozen too. I like batch cooking. Todays batch cook is lasagna)

Used to quite a lot, now very rarely or if I am hungover, which isn't often. I will go on a delivery app, out items in my order, see the total price and it puts me off ordering, especially because I know I have perfectly good meals I've batch cooked in the freezer
ShortFlamingo3409@reddit
Used to do it regularly. Now hardly ever. It's just too expensive now. Pizza got especially greedy when they started charging for delivery but still made a point that you should still tip the driver.
DollySheep32@reddit
I'm single so it's often not worth it when the meal itself is practically as much as the delivery fee. Pizza may be be the one exception as I quite like cold pizza as leftovers for lunch the next day.
joe_smooth@reddit
I travel a lot with work so I often have to get a Greggs/Pret/McDs/M&S whilst on the road. Thats expensable though so it doesnt bother me how much it is.
At home, I rarely get takeaway becuase its so expensive these days. I've promised my daughter a Pepe's tonight though but thats very rare.
Inevitable-Show6248@reddit
Generally try to limit it to once a month. We decided we enjoyed steaks far more so make a point of getting them from the butchers once a fortnight. We can have 2 steak dinners for the price of one takeout.
Which_Specific9891@reddit
single but barely make ends meet. I might order take-away twice, maybe three times a year. My general rule is if I have the ingredients in the house, I cannot order it. I have a pretty large freezer which is filled with too much food, so 99% of the time whatever I want take-away for, I have the stuff to make it. Or some version of it.
The rare thing I might order would be sushi, usually as a birthday treat or when I've been really ill and am severely depleted on B-12. But the two sushi restaurants in my town shut, so can't order sushi.
Just looked at my deliveroo app, the last thing I ordered was in June 2025.

Slight-Brush@reddit
Family. Takeaway or fakeaway once a week.
Food at the services a few times a year when driving long distances, but that's as likely to be Pret or M&S as actual fast food.
But 'takeaway' can be grilled chicken kebab and salad in a pitta, thats different to eg a Dominos spread or a large fish and chips every time.

Never, also. I do live rurally so options are very limited (and crap if I’m honest).
