The problem with UK is we dont really manufacture anything on large scale. There would have to be some major industry overhaul or technological breakthrough. Also we need to sort out the benefits system to put that 1milion NEETS to work.

How long is your commute to work?

10 minutes. When we bought our home 3 years ago, distance to work was one of our key factors. Area might not be the best, house needs some work, but that short commute is an absolite game changer, insane QOL improvement. Would never change it.

Cant say for everyone , and everyones life circumstances are different. Every male in my family worked even after retiring, simply to keep themselves occupied and 'in the society'. Be it part time taxi driver, security guard or whatever. People don't realise how boring and lonely retirement can be, especially if you dont have large family or have them close. And looking by the birth rates, next gens wont have them at all. Keep that in mind.

Why don’t people close their blinds/curtains?

Oh yes. That's so often missed when big wages are discussed. Have a couple of friends who are in high management positions and earn between 70-100k. They all pull 60hrs a week _minimum_ , have to be on call 24/7, and because they work in international corpos a 3 am video conferences are a norm. Most of them dont really take any holidays whatsoever.

No need to get so defensive. My point is, standard of living is much much higher and always been in UK compared to most of european countries, so any kind of downgrade, be it selling car, house equipment, limit food spending by any means, is just hard to swallow and unthinkable. For vast majority of eastern europe or some of the southern as well, it was natural, or even not necessary as they never got to that point of standard of living.

While some people are in fact genuinely scrapping by, i found at least half of the complainers having pretty decent life compared to lets say people in similar situation in other countries. Seen too many families claiming tough life , cursing government cost of living etc, while having 2 cars , tv in each room etc..

Because its just not very appealing looking at best, and with a simple taste (please note i say simple, not bad). Just look at UKs best signature dishes and compare them to all other countries all over the world... no contest most of the time. I know brits like to defend their kitchen to last drop of blood, but there is a reason no one else really will try your specialities outside of britian, if they can chose virtually anything else.

Is the culture between The North and The South that extreme?

Posted by LongjumpingPizza2675@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 144 comments

homealoneinuk@reddit

Yes. I've spent 15 years between the south east-west and couple in the middles. 2 years ago moved to NE (newcastle area) and there are couple diffrences noticable straight away. Some of the hard truths obviously will be hard to swallow to i expect to be heavily downvoted. Just for context - i work in big warehouse and mostly connect with working class blue collars. Mental health issues seem rampant. Whenever it is due to fact that people are just more open to talk about it, this area of the uk being much poorer overall, or other reasons, thats not up to me to judge. But i work in a large corporation in a managerial role and ive never see that many cases of mental issues across all ages, but especially among younger generation. Approach towards foreigners - while i wouldnt say people are hostile or discriminating , reception is definitely colder. Might be due to fact south has been way more diverse for a while now. Work ethic is much better - you can see people have been grafting here for generations and are much more focused on work and are more disciplined about it. These are just a couple i can think off top of my head atm. Overall im happy i moved here, but theres 100% feelable diffrence.
