Is the culture between The North and The South that extreme?

I’m from the north and haven’t been to the south of England since I was very young so I’m unaware of how people from the south act with each other. Whenever I’m watching videos about “British Culture” they always mention how the Brits are very quiet and shut off, don’t smile and talk to strangers. I’ve always found that really odd as a northerner as here we are very friendly and talk to strangers all the time. So I guess, are southerners really that closed off with people they don’t know?
