Do any of you see a strong overlap between the people that like to sail and the people that like to homestead/farm?

Logwheel won’t spin

Typically it's growth on the paddlewheel. If you are in a warm climate it can build-up quickly. But you said you cleaned it, so I didn't know. Is it inserted in the proper orientation? There's usually an arrow on the top of the sending unit.

Asym spinnaker douse CHAOS — sail ends up twisted in V-berth every time

Agreed, in my experience a bad host is usually the result of downwind angle at time of hoist. We usually have the tactician call the hoist from the back. This is assuming that you've done some practice hoists and know that your lines are not clustered.

Absurd rate for boatyard work, or am I missing something?

Lol, I had a throttle issue on my Edson pedestal. The mechanic shop Foreman warned me that the assembly bolts would likely be frozen, stainless into aluminum. He said it's $250-300 to install the cable, but if they have to spend half a day working on getting the bolts out it could be another thousand. So, I went down the weekend before and got the to of the pedestal all apart eventually; got the bolts running nice and easy in preparation for the mechanic to install the cable. Guess what? When I got the bill they still billed me for a bunch of hours and it ended up being over a thousand.

What are these three pillars with crank handles in the cockpit?

For a brief, but very interesting watch, anyone who hasn't seen it should take a look at the videos of a TP52 doing a string drop of the spinnaker in about 1.5 seconds. They will click in two pedestals to drive the string-wheel, so four big dudes going at it to get 2,800 SF of sail down the hatch.

He said it's an outboard, and you can see a separate little stream of water at the centerline. I'm guessing the cooling system is built-into the outboard, not a separate water pump like a diesel has.

Lol, we charterd J105 for Big Boat in SF Bay. The first thing our tactician did on day-one of practice was write the tide chart with Sharpie on the bulkhead next to the companionway. At the end of the day, guess what... alcohol or acetone would not remove it. 🙄

Lifting my outboard sucks

On the boat I race on we hoist the main, then take the outboard completely off to stow below. We drag the jib halyard around the shrouds to help with the lift. Takes min two people.

Not unsurprisingly, the TSA does not seem to know or care that the exact same device is under almost every seat in the aircraft. They are still prone to hassle sailers that cary them.

There are eight islands in the California Channel Islands; Catalina is only one of them. At least one island is inaccessible due to military control; another couple are inaccessible due to rocky shore conditions. But one of the largest, Santa Cruz Island, is a nature reserve, has amazing natural sea caves and protected coves all around its perimeter.

Here's a diagram of the typical Catalina mooring. Of course the important part is to get your bow hawser connected ASAP when approaching the ball/wand. After that you have plenty of time to get the aft life settled. https://preview.redd.it/9uqs8ranfoxg1.jpeg?width=947&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9709aad67f812c58e0789fa8f23d579df463340e

Thoughts on fridges on small boats for long distance cruising

Posted by BeeseChurgerMkII@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 40 comments

futurebigconcept@reddit

Mine looks similar, but I think it draws only about half an amp at 12 volts, so that would be 6 watts. I also have 150 ah house bank, lead acid. We make it work for a week by loading up block ice in the fridge, charging the batteries with the diesel 2-3 x per day, and mostly running the fridge when the diesel is running. This is not a long-term solution for more than a week or so.

It's a Wyliecat 48. So, really rigged like a windsurfer with a wishbone boom and an unstayed carbon fiber mast. In terms of a sailboat, it's a catboat, with the mast set forward and no headsail.
