What's a weirdly amachronistic thing that you can't believe was still a thing within your lifetime?

Prudishness. I really thought “no sex please, we’re British” as a facade would die off, but we still seem to be mostly OK as a society with all manner of casual shagging going on, while mostly never mentioning it (except the doggers, who act as a functional lightning rod for the country’s tittering). See also social class and status, but I’m less sad about that because the comedy is so good.

I’m curious.. Do you spread your butter with a knife or spoon?

Recent convert to the spoon crew. I won’t if I need to cut the bread, but if it’s like a baguette or sub where I’m using a break knife to cut, the spoon is better than the knife IME

Is a Simba worth it for a chronic side sleeper with a dodgy lower back?

Posted by SpecialistRub6834@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 22 comments

funfun151@reddit

I am a side sleeper with a Simba hybrid mattress and a shit lower back. I need to have a pillow between my knees but otherwise it’s a fantastic mattress. It has amazing motion isolation (partner is a mover) and it’s good for temp control if you’re a hot or cold sleeper. Shagging isn’t as good as a box spring, and we got the super king which IMO has a badly configured centre spar but I could see that being less of a concern with a smaller mattress.

Here are some tips. Never stop eating the pizza. If you’re having a polite conversation while eating it, shut that shit down and get focused on that pizza. Be economical with your bites, don’t want to get tired - 3 bites a slice max at peak performance. It is merely a pizza. You are a pizza disposal unit. Act accordingly.

Do people in the UK usually rinse off dish soap or not?

Posted by iamyurkas@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 84 comments

funfun151@reddit

I don’t rinse everything. I rinse the cats bowls, because of the limonene in the washing up liquid and him being significantly smaller than me. Nice glassware and plastic tubs get a hot rinse. I have considered just chucking a kettle over the rack but it’s rarely soapy enough to warrant as I get rid of a lot of the “head” before I start the washing.

Look into Tapo or Hikvision mate, a simple security camera with storage shouldn't get near £100. You can get a 4 camera, colour night vision set with a central controller from Hikvision for that money.

Are these crisp/sandwich combos correct?

S&V on ham seems fine to me. Vinegar is used for pickling, ham goes well with pickles. Both her tuna picks are good but straight salted, tomato, BBQ, cheese and onion and sour cream and chive flavours are also good on tuna. Here is where i start to veer more dramatically. Smoky bacon is a fine pairing with cheese I suppose, but I must petition for the odd inclusion of unsalted salt and shake. A cheese and potato pie is a classic, and a cheese and unsalted crisp sandwich is a solid facsimile. Pickled onion also clearly goes with cheese. Beef and pickled onion is mad to me. I would never have a beef and crisp sandwich though, so I’m out of my element. Chicken similarly, but chicken flavour crisps would be the last flavour I’d reach for for a chicken sandwich. Sweet and spicy wotsits would likely be my current go to, or medium takis. Nutella and smoky bacon is good. If you go for a sweet and salty pop chip though, you can crumble them up real fine and get more of a nougatine vibe. I prefer cereal for crunch in a sweet sandwich though.

Can you help me understand my husband’s point of view please? Should our son be allowed to game past 10pm on a school night if he can’t keep his voice down?

6 foot 3 so I’ve got that going for me. 200lbs or so (14st 3) so neither particularly fat or skinny, but also don’t exercise enough to be particularly muscular. Overall though, pretty happy with the old fleshbag. Unfortunately it’s a ginger fleshbag that needs glasses and does not photograph well. We take the rough with the smooth and rue having low self esteem as a youngster.

Food pseudoscience incoming. Jam with its high water content will interact in a suboptimal way with the bread making both elements worse, whereas a protective fatty layer of butter will somehow incorporate itself with the jam and make something greater than the sum of its parts.

There are actually some decent tutorials on communication, soft skills etc. on YT and such that don’t also try to shill you lifestyle nonsense. The more education focused platforms like Udemy and Coursera are probably better. You can also get a communications coach, or therapist/counsellor to proxy. It’s also OK to ask your former employer for more specific feedback (they are not obliged to give it but they might) to see what it was specifically they were noticing. I only say that as e.g. not making eye contact with customers would likely require a different approach to being a nervous communicator, or being blunt with colleagues, etc.

Ok, but think about how that would work in practice. People don’t use digital cameras because they’re inherently superior to film, they use them because it’s cheaper and easier. People pay Ticketmaster/whoever bullshit service fees invariably because that’s who the venue is partnered with, not the band. Phone pouches for all gigs or club venue is impractical and possibly more aggravating than folk having phones out. Also, what makes listening to an audio file that’s been pressed onto vinyl more real than listening to an audio file streamed from SoundCloud?

Fellow elder millennial and grandparent frequent flyer. Sunday dinner at paternal grandparents (usually beef, ritualistic patter, the younger cousins still use the memes and references from these meals despite them never having attended one) and Friday night takeaway at maternal grandparents (for ease of seating). Occasionally an afternoon visit to great-grandmother who had an Atari (!!!) that would somehow be ignored in favour of her crazy stories.
