How can I lose weight pretty fast?

Posted by Various_Extreme_8773@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 279 comments

dianthuspetals@reddit

I lost 6 stone through calorie counting a few years ago. I tried and failed many times before that, mainly because I was cutting out food I enjoyed (pasta, bread, chocolate) and ended up binging when I had that craving. It’s a lifestyle change, not a diet. Removing certain foods will only cause resentment which will likely lead to failure. You can still enjoy eating while being in a calorie deficit.

Is there any food you just can't buy because you can't portion control?

Aldi's version of Kelloggs's Crunchy Nut Clusters. I'm pregnant and it was a serious craving so my other half got me a box the other week. Gone in no time at all. It was dangerous before I was pregnant, even worse now I'm growing a human.

Why are schools so pedantic about uniform?

PE kit for the girls was a polo shirt and gym knickers, with a gym skirt allowed over the top when outside only, but never during summer. We were allowed to wear track suit bottoms over our gym knickers during the winter months and when outside only. Boys had shorts and track suit bottoms. Comfy and practical, and if boys didn’t want to have their legs exposed they didn’t have to. The male PE teacher was very chill about what we wore and he always prioritised comfort. He let us choose what parts of the uniform we wore (even allowed girls to wear shorts like the boys), and when given the choice, girls always wore track suit bottoms, or shorts when it was warmer. The female PE teacher was a nightmare, very very keen that gym knickers were always worn and her rules were obeyed. This was between the ages of 9 and 13 when bodies are obviously changing a lot and kids feel generally awful about it. She told us to get a move on and stop covering up in the changing room because once we’d given birth and had everything out in hospital, we wouldn’t care about covering up! She was a horrid woman.

Great point! It was no different when I was at school in the 00s and early 10s. I do hope that girls no longer have to wear gym knickers because they were both uncomfortable and humiliating.

I feel for you. Since the rise of dog ownership and with it irresponsible owners, I am very iffy around dogs. There's absolutely no need for a dog to be pulled around IKEA. It's overstimulating enough for humans, let alone with animals that have no business being there.

I suppose it's just a general need some people have to know the exact reasons behind people's opinions and life choices. It becomes tiresome when you have people prying and trying to get you to explain yourself after you provide a polite yet brief answer, especially over something as trivial as a TV show.

Price, quality and taste, not necessarily in that order. It's easy to make a good quality burger with whatever toppings you fancy. Pizza is also easy and cheap to make once you know how. The only thing I struggle with is the occasional craving for a Chinese, but they are so expensive these days and the quality is very hit and miss so it's not worth the risk.

I'm currently pregnant and I'm dreading what the in-laws buy for the baby. They're into tiktok shop, Shien, Temu, Amazon, all that rubbish. I see the amount of tat they buy for my partner's nephew and it's mostly rubbish. My parents will listen when I tell them what we do and don't want. I just have to hope my partner will be more assertive with his family.

When you were in school did you have to stand up when a teacher walked in the room?

Posted by probablyaythrowaway@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 108 comments

dianthuspetals@reddit

Yes. Went to a state high school between 2008 and 2011. When we started we had to stand up when a teacher entered the room. It was disruptive, especially when it was a member of the senior leadership team who popped his head in every lesson to ask "everything okay, Miss?" I went to a sixth form attached to the school between 2011 and 2013 and by then the rule had been phased out.

The treadmill is great. You don't even have to go fast, but I'd recommend a good incline and gradually increasing it. When I went to the gym I did this a few times a week and not only did it help tone my body, but it was great for my mental health.

Why is it socially unacceptable for me to not like dogs?

Posted by Facelikeabum@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1930 comments

dianthuspetals@reddit

Some owners will ignore it and cry discrimination when dogs aren't allowed into certain shops. A garden centre I love going to recently banned non-assistant dogs due to bad behaviour and in the social media comments some of the owners were comparing it to racism! That's how their minds work. Also, I understand certain shops, mainly pet shops having a dogs allowed policy. I don't understand the logic, safety or comfort of allowing dogs into Waterstones. The isles in my local are narrow enough as it is without having to worry about tripping over a dog.

I find that people with the “fur baby” mentality don’t help matters. If they see their dog as a child, that’s up to them, but if a strange human child jumped up strangers and parents laughed it off as “oh he’s just friendly” they’d be criticised for not disciplining the child.

My in laws have a smelly, biting, humping sausage dog that just loves to mount people and get right in their faces. I’m also allergic to this dog. I don’t give him any attention to try to discourage him, but once he sees an opening he goes for me. My father in law just says the usual “he won’t hurt you” line, while also being aware of my allergies. Thankfully now I’m pregnant, smells are million times stronger and I need to take care not to expose myself to things that will make me ill, I have the perfect excuse to avoid this dog. When the baby is born they aren’t going anywhere near the dog either.

I agree that it's not fair or practical to leave a dog alone when the owners are out all day. That's why owners should consider taking shorter trips and returning to check on the dog, just as people used to (or were advised to do) in the past. It's something people should consider before getting a dog.

I just wish dogs weren't allowed in restaurants full stop. It's unhygienic. Over the past few years the country has become so dog friendly that they are seemingly allowed in most shops and many eateries, whereas previously it was assistance dogs only. What happened to leave dogs at home for short periods while owners go out and about?

The entitlement of some dog owners is really off the charts. A big garden centre I love visiting recently banned non-assistance dogs and owners were frothing at the mouth on the Facebook post. One owner claimed she it was abusive to leave a dog at home for so long, as she often spent hours at the garden centre then visited other shops as a big day out. I pointed out that people had dogs for years and managed trips out while leaving the dogs at home, albeit shortening the time they were away from home so they could return to check on the dog. She just didn't grasp that perhaps instead of expecting the world to cater to your dog, she should instead be a responsible dog owner. In other news, the garden centre is now pleasantly dog-free, save the occasional wonderful assistance dog. No more worrying about tripping over leads, dogs, or stepping in shit!

The first one I recognised was Paranoid by Black Sabbath at number 20, but I was surprised to see how many older songs (the only ones I'd stand a chance of recognising!) were in the charts. 15/100 is far higher than I expected! 20. Paranoid - Black Sabbath 22. Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis 23. Live Forever - Oasis 25. Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne 27. Wonderwall - Oasis 45. Mama I'm Coming Home - Ozzy Osbourne 48. War Pigs - Black Sabbath 49. Iron Man - Black Sabbath 52. Dreams - Fleetwood Mac 69. Iris - Goo Goo Dolls 79. Mr Brightside - The Killers 86. The Chain - Fleetwood Mac 89. Everywhere - Fleetwood Mac 97. Viva La Vida - Coldplay 98. Yellow - Coldplay

Same here! My partner and I only fire up the Switch in Autumn and Winter. Typically, we spend the Spring and Summer months out and about at weekends or in the garden. We were considering pre-ordering the Switch 2 or buying one after launch (stock permitting, of course), but we decided against it simply because it isn't gaming season. We also play strategy games on PC together during these months. During the winter we used to pretty much spend the entire day playing Civ, but we haven't played since march.
