When you were in school did you have to stand up when a teacher walked in the room?

Oh yes. Private schools, left early 90s. Most teachers just popping in to ask a quick question would do the 'no, no, stay seated' gesture, but it was expected when the class teacher came in (or stay standing, for classes where rooms were locked until the teacher arrived), until you'd done the 'Good morning, 4A - good morning Miss Wotsit' and were told to sit. My A-level teachers didn't enforce it, but they did lower down the school. Not a bad thing. Seems to have died out, along with teachers sitting on the same tables as kids for lunch and making conversation, and all kids having to stay at the lunch table until the room was finished and the teacher in charge said Grace. When people wonder how private school kids get their better conversation skills with adults, that's how it's done.
