How much and how often do you drink alcohol?

Posted by RichieRichard12@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 644 comments

Working_Document_541@reddit

The only alcohol I can drink is cider from Westons or the fruit flavoured ones from Sweden.. the others like magners, I just taste the sulphites which I can only stomach with a curry. Beers and larger? Forget it. I just taste the ingredients, I'm not sure what it's supposed to taste like.. but it's just too dry and puts me off Wine? See beers and larger. Spirits? I can manage but only with a mixer. After my 18th I don't rush to the spirits. All things considered though I might drink alcohol 2x a year and only a bottle

Do dental hygienists perform dental check-ups or is my dentist taking the mick?

Seems to be a thing over the last decade or so.. my first dentist (private) used to do the whole thing now there seems to be a wave of new hygienists position that has appeared. But again they are supposedly qualified dentists.. but they won't do regular dentistry and vice versa.. on the same patient. In other words it's a way of charging more money..

My son is supposed to wear glasses but because of his erratic head movement makes it a bit of a chore as he keeps knocking them off (even with the strap). I can't say how accurate they are but the optometrist generally has a good idea of what they are looking at. They did explain but it goes over my head. Something about the shape of the cones in the eyes.. While it's probably not as accurate as electronic precision machinery they do their best.

Is British history boring to British people?

Posted by freshmaggots@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 508 comments

Working_Document_541@reddit

I enjoy history. But sadly most schools/exam boards hyper fixate on a specific time.. When I was doing A levels it was Europe 1890 until 1945 and Britain during the great depression. We weren't to talk about the war except in the abstract and it was all about the politics of the time.. All of history and we were doomed to repeat the same. Needless to say I had gotten disillusioned after my exams and sort of picked at history subjects as I go.

Why do I now have to pay for Sky AND TNT to watch the Premier League — is there any legit way to avoid paying twice?

Posted by Fearless-Boot-3083@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 227 comments

Working_Document_541@reddit

Sky kept trying to get my dad to sign up to sky sports when his package came to an end.. they just wouldn't take no for an answer. He watched the grand total of 3 channels and the occasional film. It was a bargain apparently, for a £30 a month on top of the £40pm they wanted for the regular channels.. He told them where to stick it. Disconnected the box and dish and informed them that they can collect the equipment. They tried to charge him to return the equipment, he offered to drop it off at a sky maintenance locker next time he was in the area. They didn't reply. We sent it to recycling about 7 years later.. (my dad was hardly the tidiest person when it comes to electronics)

Do you think UK schools don't push students hard enough?

Posted by Other_Inspection_143@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 480 comments

Working_Document_541@reddit

Its a huge problem that has a many headed answer. We could argue that its the govt fault for interfering, but since quite a few schools have turned to become 'Academies' that has become less of an issue.. You could also argue that parents aren't doing enough to discipline their children, or teach them the basics.. but on the other side of that Both parents have to work, you can no longer raise a family on a single wage. Of course there's the issues that some of the biggest money makers (Influencers and Football) do not require much of an education, and appear easy to do.. I know it's not but it's the appearance.. Thing to also remember that not every child is academic, I certainly wasn't, I could pass the exams with a reasonable grade but I would much rather have been dealing with physical work.. I would have likely signed up for apprenticeships if there was any. Like I said it's not a straightforward answer. The Social support does need looking into and various Agencies are looking into it but it will take a long time to filter out the wasters.

Personally, its because I sweat really easily. I'm generally quite warm blooded so anything that traps the heat is a big no no. The only real exception would be in Winter when I'm outside and I'm wearing a shirt and its freezing Brass Monkeys. (About -7 and below) or I'm expecting the wind chill.

It's useful. Haven't used it for a short while though.. It does take up a bit of space for storage so you do need to be aware of that.. I find that I can make a medium size loaf for about 70p. But obviously cosy vary depending on what type of bread you want. The trickiest thing is to find a recipe that suits you.. my breadmaker came with recipe ideas but I'm not a huge fan.. so I'm trying from websites instead.

What would you do to revive the British high street?

Posted by CJRP8@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 794 comments

Working_Document_541@reddit

It's funny though I was in Yorkshire last week and the parking I thought was ridiculous cheap. Near where I was staying, just a 5 minute walk from the town centre a NCP parking was 95p for 2 hours (that is not a typo) and less than £4 for 24hrs. Yet here near the Cotswolds I thought £3 was cheap for an hour. Admittedly there wasn't a great deal to do in the Yorkshire town, but they were trying to beautify it with a new pedestrian area it's just a shame its currently a work site. However I did notice that the high street was suffering a plague of bars, betting shops, Turkish barbers and not a few heavy drinkers. Even a number of the charity shops were closing. During the day it wasn't quite so bad with a few independent shops but the area itself needs a bit of tlc. It's not just encouraging retailers in, it's the availability of reasonably paid jobs not directly related to retail to be in the area. You need the demand which ever way you go about it, from people with spare cash in their pockets. It's a complicated subject to be fair, without an easy answer.. one way or another something will have to give.

Is NHS dentistry better than private dentistry?

Posted by chocolateguineapig@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 39 comments

Working_Document_541@reddit

NHS dentistry has been a bit hap hazard.. the biggest issue I had with the last one I went to was having to keep coming in to have any work done. A filling would take about 2 weeks to do, a root canal? 3 weeks. Maybe. I had to book 20/30 minutes slots etc it was a pain I went private in the end.. my dentist.. is ok.. nothing to write home about.. but my first private dentist was brilliant, he used to descale and polish and everything even saved my life by getting me an emergency extraction for 2 of my teeth as they were high risk of infection and it could have killed me. Sadly he retired and I understand it hasn't been the same since they introduced hygienists as seperate entities

"I'm sorry I can't serve you alcohol as you have been drinking" "What? How do you know I'm drunk?" "Simple I can smell it on your breath, and through your behaviour" (He has his friends had been causing issues as they walked down the store.) He goes bright red then purple proceeds to berate me, if I hadn't refused before he certainly wasn't going to get it now. His friends all laugh. "Do you know who my father is?" "No, do you?" Epileptic with indignation at being told no he doesn't hear me "my father is a top lawyer in London, he will have your job, he will sue Tesco" I shrug and say "Ok" and I put the beer to one side and continue to ignore him as he's shouting and swearing at me as I tender the rest of the queue. The manager comes running down the store and bodily throws him out..

I applied several times to various care companies to be a home carer.. Turned down by every single one... I would have thought there would be some attention given that I already work as a carer in my home life (none of which effects my work) And I deal with people everyday.. but I suspect it's because I'm Male, white and British. Seriously, in my last job 98% of carers I had contact with were of Foreign Nationality, typically from places akin to India or South Africa. Nothing against these people, most do a great job.. but I'm curious what they offer that I don't..

We have netflix, paramount, Disney and prime.. but we also have BBC, itvx and the channel 4od if we need it. If anything we are spoilt for choice.

Not refused so much, as much as advised to seek medical help to lower my BP. Last time I went to give blood, the phlebotomist was struggling to find a vein and accidentally went straight through my vein.. much apologies later, I was sat at the table for the free tea and biscuits, I remember feeling faint and saying to the person next to me 'Get help', next thing I remember was being assisted to the floor with them checking my BP and the numbers were text book, which I knew was wrong for me.. The Sister told me she would put me on the Non donor list for 2 years while I get my bp sorted.. 4 years later I'm still terrible at giving blood and if i haven't had enough to drink and eat I will feel giddy and have to lie down, the nurses are usually fairly good about it.

Do you rinse the suds off when washing up?

I don't. If your plates etc are wet, the suds slide off anyway. Gravity is amazing.. I, and for that matter no one I've met, has ever noticed the taste of dish soap when using my dishes.. I mean it's not like you squirt the soap directly on to the dishes in the first place, especially after you've just washed them..

£6.20 for up to 24hours in hospital car park. How much do you think more than 24hours would be?

Posted by zinasbear@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 19 comments

Working_Document_541@reddit

If your an inpatient, you just need to ask the ward sister to get you a exemption permit for you take to the parking office (usually) on site.. how much they charge after that?? Will depend on the agreement that the hospital has with parking company. Too be honest £6.20 for 24hrs is amazing compared to most car parks I've been to.

Some of my colleagues (usually younger) have written off vehicles, one even caught fire (not crews fault, just overused and insufficient maintenance on the vans). They are all still working.. just had too fill a load of paperwork instead.

I used to be in the supermarket 'frontline'. We were told repeatedly 'think 21', 'Think 25' and proxy sales. I used some level of common sense when it came to a family shop, but when it came to the alcohol shop... As a collective we agreed on all in the group with ID or no sale. Some members of the public just didn't get the idea, especially as they were buying it for their offspring, while they stood next to them. Normally it wasn't the typical Adult drink either, it was something either harsh, drunk in a couple, or sweet and sickly depending on the offspring. Tbf however we didn't often get proxy sales. We had more trouble from drunks come in to get more alcohol, and get really pissed off with me when I refused them... Ahh fun times..

I've had drunks argue with me that they haven't been drinking. Whilst being propped up against the till and staggered across the store. I had a mother chat across the checkout to a 'Friend' boast long that their son got into Oxford, while she was unloading her shopping. While I was waiting for her to finish her conversation she turned to me and condescension in her voice and says "Well get on with it.. your supposed to pack my shopping". Oh yes I did pack her shopping. Eggs under the fabric softener, bread with the tins etc... I just smiled and waved as she left me, always polite that's the trick. Oh and I had someone buy about £3k of alcohol... In cash at about 1230am. I even had 'Do You Know who My Father is?' after refusing an especially arrogant little shit alcohol because he had been drinking. "No, do you?" My reply was.. sadly he was so full of self importance that he didn't hear or chose to ignore me, after all I dared to say no to him. I can probably dredge up a few more memories from my decade or so in retail.

If there are any left over after Easter that can vary. Some do it on the Easter Monday some do it a few days later
