Paying £75 pm for internet alone - is this normal?
Posted by ByronLebanon@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 110 comments
Is BT ripping me off? I get 55Megabits down and pay another £25 for the phone, I have done since May 2014. I rang them to complain but they’ve now promised it will be better but renewed my contract - I’ve got until the 15th June to cancel if I want. What other ISPs are out there that might beat them out? I live in quite a rural area in the south east and we’re still on copper lines so no hope of fibre for a while.
RemoteMysterious1862@reddit
Horrendous mate
Equivalent-Pea8907@reddit
i get 1gb fibre from virgin for £37 a month
beg_1294@reddit
ISP definitely ripping you off, I pay £18 for 1gbs up/down
OurSeepyD@reddit
Wtf? Where?
beg_1294@reddit
I live in Essex and I use Hyperoptics
JoeyJoeC@reddit
Unfortunately they use CGNatting. Means nothing to most people but you can't use UPnP or port forwarding. Deal breaker for games that require it to host etc.
beg_1294@reddit
Absolutely, but for additional pay you can get static IP address
turtleship_2006@reddit
5 quid a month for hyperoptic
adamMatthews@reddit
Most ISPs offer a workaround.
The one I’m with CGNats, but will give you port forwarding with ddns if you call support, or will sell you a static IPV4 for £3/month.
Hopefully IPV6 takes over soon and we don’t have to worry about it. The only reason they’re all using a CGNat is because we’re running out of IPV4 addresses.
Steve8557@reddit
Hyperoptic were great when I was with them
OurSeepyD@reddit
Their site says £26/month, did you manage to get a deal somehow? I'm only so interested because I'd love the same deal! 😂
beg_1294@reddit
😂😂 No, I switched last year in December, they had some sort of offer, it was too good to be true and I gave a shot. Also I didn’t pay anything for the first 3 month
beg_1294@reddit
😂😂 No, I switched last year in December, they had some sort of offer, it was too good to be true and I gave a shot. Also I didn’t pay anything for the first 3 month
ThrowRAMomVsGF@reddit
That's crazy! I had BT for a couple of years because they gave me a deal for £15/month (was getting around 50Mbps), the moment that offer expired I was on to the next ISP (I'm now at £30/500Mbps).
petiweb5@reddit
The stability and the speed depends on the line I guess. But the price should be definitely cheaper! Go to uswitch.com and find a better deal.
flemtone@reddit
Smarty are offering an unlimited 5G sim deal with router for £15 per month that you can connect a phone to the back of the router and use the mobile calling as a phone and get speeds up to 500mbps
aitkey4802@reddit
Use https://bidb.uk to see what you can get - you might be surprised.
If no change, try Plusnet if you can ditch the phone. If not, then I’d recommend Zen. Either will be much cheaper and give you the same speed.
-kAShMiRi-@reddit
Plusnet no longer offers a phone.
aitkey4802@reddit
That’s why I said they should try Plusnet IF they can ditch the phone.
Scooob-e-dooo8158@reddit
A couple of months ago, I allowed a rep to talk me into signing up to BRSK fibre optic 150Mb. 2 year contract £24 a month with no in contract price increase. I instantly cancelled Virgin Media which was about to increase the price to £44 a month for 125Mb. So far, so good.
Lopsided_Sugar_9665@reddit
That’s not right. I pay £52 for 1gb… call them, tell them you’re leaving, be prepared with an alternative deal.
To be honest OP, I’d be leaving whatever BT put on the table - they’ve been taking the piss out of you.
Plusnet have been brilliant for me. I had six weeks delay on go live due to Openreach not sorting the fibre cable - they gave me so much credit on my account I didn’t pay a bill for four months - support brilliant and UK based.
dom_eden@reddit
If you’re on 55 meg down with no pure fibre and only copper, then you’re on the FTTC product, also known as BT Infinity. This is the same product resold by a ton of other providers like Vodafone for a much cheaper rate so you should switch! Just use any price comparison site like uswitch.
callendoor@reddit
I pay £32 for 1 GB and a landline phone with Free calls in the evenings and weekends.
Przyer@reddit
Huge rip off. I pay £40 for 1150 with virgin.
yepyep5678@reddit
That's still expensive imo
Ok-Football6675@reddit
I was paying £68 per month with Virgin for only the broadband and phone line.
Przyer@reddit
Modern day not sure about you guys but we barely used our phone line. We were paying £56 I think for sky phone line, tv & internet. Changed because their speeds are way too slow.
cloche_du_fromage@reddit
I told them to fuck off trying to charge for a separate phone line since the phone got switched to run through the router.
Now paying 65 for 1gb broadband and xl TV package.
seven-cents@reddit
Absolutely insane!
I pay £30 a month for 500 Mbps up and down (and the true speeds are very close to this).
I no longer have a landline as I don't want or need it.
jpcafe10@reddit
11 years without trying to get a renewal discount? That’s crazy
jpcafe10@reddit
You can’t stay that long with a provider. You do the 18 months -> try to cancel / cry for a “new joiner” discount -> if they don’t give you just leave.
Then next contract do under your spouse or something. Usually they’ll get you a decent renewal deal anyways.
FreddyFrogFrightener@reddit
That's insane, I pay £42 and get 600mb, unlimited downloads, sky TV and movies, netflix and paramount plus for that.
Fickle_Hope2574@reddit
This is a troll post right? This cant be serious.
MattyLePew@reddit
Holy moly. I’m paying around £50 a month for gigabit.
Forever_a_Kumquat@reddit
That's mental. I pay £25 for fibre to the home 500mb download.
£75 for copper line is insane.
samg3881@reddit
I pay £24 for 1gb upload and download, speed tests even give me 1.3 gb.
OPs is definitely mental
MKMK123456@reddit
Who are you with ?
samg3881@reddit
Youfibre, their prices have gone up now, I've been with them a couple of years.
End of the year I'll be paying 32 which still isn't bad
kilgyb@reddit
I pay like 19pm for a 5g hub (no fiber in my flat) and get like 200mb download speed
dvi84@reddit
I pay £100 per month for 1 gig internet through virgin media plus my mobile phone and every TV channel including Sky and TNT sports & movies. You’re being screwed.
cannymintprints@reddit
I pay £29 for TalkTalk Fibre 65 (full fibre not available on my street yet) which includes the landline.
I think we paid around £23 for the first couple of years as new customers.
You're being ripped off massively.
jeffmorgan1991@reddit
With Toob paying £25 for gigabit up and down
leninzen@reddit
You're being insanely ripped off. I get 600 mb download and pay 25 quid
Espresso-Newbie@reddit
500mb download + phone line = £26 for me. Sky. You’re paying 4 times what I’m paying for 10% of the download speed.
Brian_from_accounts@reddit
Do you really need a landline?
Depending on where you’re located, you may be able to get fibre .
Cautious_Seesaw2073@reddit
Yes ..I pay £28 on vodafone.cheap as chips
a-hthy@reddit
BT Is now part of EE, have they not been in contact to switch you over? EE deals will be cheaper for sure
Particular-Back610@reddit
massive ripoff mate although I don't know whether copper line prices are different
In the UK I paid £25 a month for 75/Mb download 20/Mb upload and even then thought BT were ripping me off.
Mind you I had no phone service... refused it.
DigitalStefan@reddit
Not normal for BT. Normal for Andrews & Arnold.
iamabigtree@reddit
Blimey Riley!
I'm paying £30 for 500Mbit with Virgin (overhead lines)
Could get 150Mbit with TalkTalk for about £25
£75 is such a piss take it should be illegal.
Illustrious-Log-3142@reddit
Thats madness! Even the mainstream providers should be able to give you a better deal eg. Sky. Also look and see if your area is getting Fibre any time soon and get on the list to be notified by whatever company is doing it
Born-Ad4452@reddit
Satellite, maybe. Otherwise no no no no no
brokencasbutt67@reddit
Not normal. Even in Hull, where theyre only just getting alternatives to KCOM after decades of a Monopoly, its maybe half that price.
Critical-Box-1851@reddit
I pay £30/month for 500mbs through city fibre. BT suck ass
jimbobedidlyob@reddit
I get 500mbps for 30 a month.
boardinmyroom@reddit
HOW
jimbobedidlyob@reddit
Brsk
JoeyJoeC@reddit
Hyperoptic are faster for less than that. Just depends on where you live and what services are available.
PerceptionGreat2439@reddit
£25 a month for NOWTV, broadband and landline.
Currently getting 72.2
It's going up next month by £3.
HighwayEconomy579@reddit
£75 per month for 55mbps? That’s insane!! I’m paying £28 for 250mbps with virgin media.
LordAnchemis@reddit
Sounds really expensive
Practical-Command634@reddit
If you live in a 5g area get a dongle or an old phone and just set up a mobile WiFi network. Won't be more that £10 or £15 a month for crazy speeds and has the added bonus of being able to take with you if you're holidaying in the UK or lots of other countries if you get the right network/package.
sihasihasi@reddit
I'm paying £25/m for fibre 950Mbit symmetrical.
x-ThatGirl-x@reddit
full on ripping you off buddy
robster9090@reddit
If you’ve never spoke to them it will just go on , it’s on the customer to speak to them about price and packages
geezerebenezer@reddit
Pay £28 with virgin
t0b9@reddit
I pay 75 for a gigabit connection (think it’s actually 900mb/s) with EE, and I’m being mugged off. So you most definitely are lol
Dnny10bns@reddit
Absolutely not. Always cancel contract at end and wait till final week. Their proper retention team will contact you then. Last year was the only time I never stayed with mine because I'm now on 1GB, no limits I'm aware of and it's £25 per month. Was paying about £30 for 250MB on my previous one.
bonjajr@reddit
That’s mad. I pay £88 for fiber, and all the tv channels (sports, movies Netflix)
PKblaze@reddit
You must be out of contract or something cause those prices are wackadoo. Especially for that speed.
jillcrosslandpiano@reddit
You should be getting tip-top gigabit for that price.
JoeyJoeC@reddit
Gigabit? I pay less for 2.4Gb.
Much-Fall-9515@reddit
I pay for zen 900, £40
JoeyJoeC@reddit
Only £15 a month more for that sweet 2.4Gbps! (CityFibre not OpenReach)
r33c31991@reddit
Get yourself on broadband choices (Google it) it'll compare all prices in your area and it's generally the best deal. If you want to stay on BT, quote them the prices you've seen on there and they'll try to match it... If they can't, keep it moving!
Ceejayncl@reddit
No, absolutely not.
JoeyJoeC@reddit
It's terrible really. But I'm assuming OP also gets some other packages with that.
JoeyJoeC@reddit
I pay £55 for 2.4Gbps with Zen.
retyfraser@reddit
Oh .dear !
I'm paying £34 for 500Mbps
CautiousCapsLock@reddit
It’s absurdly expensive. Not a dig at you really but keep on top of contracts and when they expire. If you let them just go the supplier has full rights to just charge essentially what they want within reason. I put a note in my calendar 1 month before the expiry I shop around, loyalty means so little these days and new customer offers are good.
Winter_Parsley8706@reddit
Mega rip off!! Cheeky bastards. Get on USwitch or similar and switch it. It's dead easy
Fullmoon-Angua@reddit
tbh I'm paying similar with Sky, however I know I can get it off them much much cheaper if I sign up for another 18 month contract with them. I don't want to get into another 18month contract with them as I'll probably be moving quite soon so I just have to eat it up.
Megalodon33@reddit
So you were out of contract and on a rolling one? That will put you on a more expensive price. You mentioned they renewed your contract. Was it definitely renewed at £75?
sockhead99@reddit
FTTC with Vodafone, £21 a month including line rental and home phone. Currently on 35mb, but when full fibre goes in in the next few weeks it will be £24 a month for 70mb
ahoneybadger3@reddit
You must be out of contract.
Working_Document_541@reddit
My grandparents were paying about that for perhaps 200mps. (Down wind, in the waining moon on a day with a X in it) Despite my dad encouraging them to swap.. they were of the breed that loyalty counted. Sadly it doesn't. Over 20 years they were paying £95pm after the joining contract finished. (Includes the annual increases as well)
IllustriousAd4924@reddit
I can't be reading that right! I'm paying £30 for mine!
CynicalSorcerer@reddit
Cancel it now. Literally every other ISP will beat that
joshua1486@reddit
I pay £33 for 850MB
stevedavies12@reddit
Check out the price comparison websites
gompgo@reddit
Huge rip-off.
Please call a few companies such a Virgin, Vodaphone, Three etc or visit their shop at High Street, You may save a fortune.
huskydaisy@reddit
That's ridiculous. My parents live in the arse end of nowhere and they have a 4g vodafone deal at £30/month with amazing speeds (copper can get fucked). Idk where you are but BT probably don't have you over a barrel?
Fyrespray@reddit
I pay £45 for 900 up and down and have an IP phone that costs nothing unless I make outgoing calls.
You are being royally ripped off!
BrutalLasagna@reddit
I pay £50 and I get the 1000mbps from BT. Definitely get a new contract or ring up and re-negotiate
tykeoldboy@reddit
Are you on BT's street plan because you seem to be paying for internet for every building in the street
Personal-Listen-4941@reddit
I pay £50 for broadband & tv (& technically phone) with Virgin. You’re being ripped off.
burgertwot@reddit
We pay £35pm, but that includes various discounts for being long-term customers and having our phone contracts with EE. That’s for up to 250mb broadband too!
TL;DR - you’re being fleeced!
AmazingRedDog@reddit
Yes it’s a lot but you’ve said rural so not comparable to London zones 1-5
Simplest thing? Go on a comparison website, enter your postcode and see what’s available.
Iscasteve@reddit
It's not "Normal", but it commonly happens which is why they do it.
Plusnet offers me 900Mbps FTTH for £39.99 a month.
Mdl8922@reddit
£29 per month for 900mbps, so yeah £75 is steep!
Horror-Ant-1525@reddit
Jesus I pay £29 for toob on cityfibre in Hampshire. 900mb upload/download.
RockasaurusFlex@reddit
£26pcm for 500mbps, with a combined unlimited sim for extra £10pcm with Vodafone...
You're waaaay over
Ok_Wall_4573@reddit
If you get 55Mb down on BT it must be FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet), 55Mb is fairly typical for that and unless you're very close to the cabinet about as good as it gets.
Firstly enter your postcode into the Better Internet Dashboard (https://bidb.uk/) to check there's no AltNet FTTP available to you
But most providers should be able to offer you a significant discount on the FTTC you have currently. Try PlusNet or Zen, I use both and have no problems.
Euphoric_Magazine856@reddit
I pay less than half that for 910mb down.
Ok_Elderberry_5690@reddit
Yeah you should tell bt to fo
Dylan1998x@reddit
Sky Broadband is currently £22.00 a month with a £50.00 voucher for the same speed via Uswitch.
Sad-Garage-2642@reddit
BT VoIP is like £5.75 a month plus another £22ish for that level of broadband. You're being ripped off.
Various_Good_6964@reddit
That's a lot of money for 55Mb, but tricky if you're rural. If you've done checks for major providers for your postcode and none offer comparable speeds, the only other option would be to get a 4G/5G router if you live in an area with good phone signal?
Fragile_reddit_mods@reddit
That’s not even close to normal. I’ll tell you that.
