Maeshowe is IMHO more impressive than Skara Brae. Ring of Brodgar amd Clava Cairns (near Culloden) also very worthwhile. There's a Broch just north of Dunrobin Castle which are both close to the A9. Great Views from top of Ben Bhraggie. There's also an impressive Broch near Ben Hope but it's quite a long way west from where you catch the ferry.

Its so secret I don't want to publicise it. Its not a hotel or place you can book so maybe its not up your street. It would however satisfy some of your criteria.

None that I've seen. Could you use the Grid Reference Finder Tool to convert OSGB to lat/long? It also outputs to w3w with no extra effort. https://gridreferencefinder.com I use this on a daily basis and it works for me.

In my part of the UK, colloquially we refer to 4x2 or 6x2, but all measurements are made in millimetres and metres. Supplier paperwork is also exclusively metric say 47x97 etc. Sheet products such as plasterboard and plywood are referred to verbally in imperial sizes (8x4 ft) although when written it's only ever metric (2440 x 1220).

Fort William would tick most of your boxes, but I suppose it depends what you do for work if you can find any vacancies. Badenoch/Strathspey would also tick boxes for you, but I am not sure if we have a Bouldering gym that's open. There is one at Glenmore Lodge but Im not sure it's available for the General public. I'm sure there is a wall at Fort William leisure centre (assuming it's still open).

Why can't plastic water bottles be easier to clean?

Posted by GiftedGeordie@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 26 comments

The key is thoroughly drying it out after washing & thorough rinsing. One thing you can try is to freeze it then knock out the ice to dry it fully. If & when there is mould growth then soak in a sodium bicarbonate solution to kill the bugs. Some brands are easier to keep clean than others.

Would you still go on a planned trip after seeing burglars on your CCTV going round the houses?

Posted by pingusaysnoot@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 18 comments

Vodkaboris@reddit

You want to make your place as difficult as possible. You'll never make it impossible, but you can put them off enough to go find an easier target. If everyone in your street does this they'll go to an easier neighbourhood. So , in addition to your CCTV: PIR activated lights outside Solid (not uPVC) doors c/w 5 point locking mechanisms. Locks on windows. Timers on lights inside the house to make it appear occupied. Consider an alarm, preferably monitored, although personally, I think this is a last resort. Gravel on paths around the house. Thorny bushes (or roses?) in front of windows. Thorny hedge at your boundary fence. I think there are PIR devices you can link to an external speaker which plays a dog barking + fit signs saying " _Beware of the dog_ " Is their a neighbourhood watch locally? Even if it's only signage, it's enough to make some think twice.

I live in the village where the World Championships are held so may know a thing or two. I think the correct consistency is achieved using two volumetric units of liquid for every one of porridge oats. I use rolled oat flakes and don't know if the same formula works for milled oats.

Speaking as someone who once lived next door to a DIY fanatic, probably 9pm. Allegedly his wife gave him a hammer, nails and a bit of timber for Christmas to practice his hammering. It didn't make for a good environment to study for exams.

Why is the Scottish word "outwith" not used across the UK?

Posted by Rascalwill@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 183 comments

Vodkaboris@reddit

We do have other words, but perhaps they're from a Scots or Doric origin, eg Mingin', Dreich, Glaikit, etc... Outwith, feels more like a word that fell out of use in England. I do think we should bring back 'overmorrow', meaning the day after tomorrow.

How hard is Ben Nevis to hike compared to snowdon?

Posted by Foreign_Many5785@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 52 comments

Vodkaboris@reddit

We can have almost any type of weather at any time of year. Snow in summer is unusual but isn't unknown. Equally, we've had some outrageously mild spells in winter stripping much of the snow - even high up on the plateau. October to April - be prepared for full on winter conditions, but pray for fine weather using calibrated prayer mats - infused with Islay Whisky. The Pony track is technically straightforward but it's starting from almost sea level so it's a long way up. It takes most people 3½ to 4 hours up and anywhere between 1½ to 4 hours down. I've met people who took as long as 6 hours to go up, so the for unfit people it can be a 10 hour day.

I've found it relatively easy to adjust but turning left and roundabouts both mess with my head. Also, hill starts are weirdly tricky with the handbrake in my other hand. Germany is easy. France is no problem as long as you don't go into Paris. Italy however is another story since the Centreline is regarded as for guidance only 🤔

Ford have been struggling a bit of late though. Recently they've dropped the Mondeo. Years ago they dropped the Granada (Scorpio) after an American looking design flopped. Fiesta stopped production very recently. So now .. 🔌 Electric / Hybrid Vehicles These are part of Ford’s electrified passenger offering in Europe and globally: Ford Puma Gen-E – Compact all-electric SUV crossover. Ford Mustang Mach-E – All-electric performance SUV. Ford Capri - electric Coupé Ford Explorer (electric in Europe) Ford Kuga – Available with hybrid powertrains (PHEV/HEV). 🚙 Internal-Combustion / Multi-Energy Vehicles Ford still sells petrol/diesel or hybrid alternatives in segments where demand and regulation allow: Ford Puma – Small SUV (petrol / mild-hybrid). Ford Focus – Family hatchback / estate with mild-hybrid power. Ford Kuga – Mid-size SUV (hybrid/plug-in hybrid). 🚐 People Carriers & MPVs Ford Tourneo Connect – Family MPV with petrol, diesel or hybrid options. Ford Tourneo Courier – Compact people-carrier; petrol version available. Ford E-Tourneo Courier – All-electric compact MPV.
