Road trip. Anyone with stop-off suggestions?

Morning all
I’m driving up to Orkney from Lancaster this weekend for a bit of a mini adventure (Skara Brae is the main mission 🏺).
If anyone’s got recommendations for additional must-see spots — especially other Neolithic sites — or great places to eat, swim, or just anything a bit special I shouldn’t miss, I’d love to hear them.
I'll always put local knowledge & ppl who have already visited over the generic offerings from googling & ai'ing.
-Thank you

Thank you for all the suggestions. To bring it full circle post trip, i'll add the places we visited and any other suggestions to dip into for a future trip.

It's a 8h drive just to the ferry port so that's two days of your weekend gone straight away.
I'd be reluctant to add any major detours or stops as even with just a 30 minute break every 2h your up to 10h before waiting for a ferry and getting to where ever your staying.
Honestly I'd consider axing the idea and making a week of the trip so you can properly enjoy it and explore.

Thanks JoeDaStudd. Under no illusion that it will be driving heavy with limited Orkney time. Part of the adventure for me is the journey but i think this will probably be more of a recce for a future longer trip with my wife.

Check out atlas obscura they have a map which shows lots of interesting and different places.
There is also the megalithic map.\ https://www.megalithic.co.uk/asb_mapsquare.php
Moray Firth is great for dolphin (and whale) watching.
If I was doing it and it had probably pack some camping gear or get one of those car mattresses and see how it goes.\ They'll be enough places along the way I'd want to stop I'd have to force myself to keep driving.

So many spots in the Lake District which would be great to stop off at - Castlerigg Stone Circle is breathtaking - amazing views.

Long Meg and her Daughters would be less of a detour.

Skara Brae is sick. Some of the tours let you go down into the houses. They gave me a neolithic tool to hold like it was no big deal. Like, thousands of years old, and I'm just some random dickhead!

Maeshowe is IMHO more impressive than Skara Brae. Ring of Brodgar amd Clava Cairns (near Culloden) also very worthwhile. There's a Broch just north of Dunrobin Castle which are both close to the A9. Great Views from top of Ben Bhraggie.
There's also an impressive Broch near Ben Hope but it's quite a long way west from where you catch the ferry.

Depending on time of day you’re approaching Aberdeen giving your timescale I’m assuming that’s your ferry port?
breakfast but they do lunch
Lunch but they do breakfast too
Fish and Chips
Dunnotar Castle You could do this very quickly. Park the car walk to the cliff top take your photos and get back in the car. It’s well worth a visit but it’s an incredible view worth the stop.

The Hermitage at Dunkeld is a lovely short walk. The only downside is it doesn't have toilets apart from Portaloos so stop at Perth services first or House of Bruar is a major tourist trap but has a good food hall and toilets.
Aviemore also has a decent selection of shops and cafes and is only just off the A9. It also has an Aldi and little Tesco if you need to pick up any supplies.
