What did we used to do before we could just scroll on our phones?

Read books. Have hobbies. Exercise more (yes, I know you've said you're going for a swim - I'm talking more society in general). I'm actually trying to actively reduce my screen time. The best way I've found is to leave my phone in another room.

Did pens at school actually explode, or was this something purposeful that I was left out of?

Why does Tesco now ONLY sell skinless chicken?

Posted by Present_Teacher7966@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 92 comments

TicksAndBricks@reddit

Because they sell the ones without skin, they don't sell the ones with it. So they stop stocking them (In that particular store). I wonder as well whether, perhaps, it takes slightly longer, and I mean fractionally, to cut up the chicken keeping the skin intact and that adds up over the tens, hundreds, millions of chicken thighs they sell. Purely speculation there though.

Fair. Bloody annoying for the 1% though!! A bit like when you ring somewhere, for example the other week I was stuck on the motorway and needed to change a cinema booking time, and get a long winded message telling you that you can do it on their website. I was there thinking, I know, but not whilst driving I can't..!! 😂 (But obviously it's not aimed at me)

People who post on social media about how they don't like this or that because it's a way for the Government or big companies to steal their data.... When Facebook et al probably know more about them than their own family does!!

When I was 18 and working full time, I paid my parents £250 a month in "room and board" which was around a quarter of my take home wage (we're going back to 2000/1 here). Plus I did my share of household chores. I never minded, only seemed fair to me.

No I don't. If someone is, I'll sushi them during a quiet part of the film. Recently someone a couple of rows in front kept getting his phone out....my aim with popcorn got quite accurate!!

How many times a year do you “call sick” at work?

Posted by Aggravating-Fig-9274@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1525 comments

TicksAndBricks@reddit

I'm a Paramedic and I average maybe 3 periods of sickness a year. Occasionally it's muscular injury, but more often it's that I have something potentially infectious and cannot morally risk passing that in to the vulnerable patients we see.

How do emergency services find a location?

Posted by AnonymousCapybara72@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 115 comments

TicksAndBricks@reddit

I can only speak for the time I went to listen in to 999 calls for an NHS Trust, but the location finding was actually done using Google Maps. The call taking software doesn't have a map function. I should say did because this was over a decade ago, but I doubt much has changed.

UK Heatwaves - do you love them or loathe them?

Posted by Chocolateforlunch37@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1298 comments

TicksAndBricks@reddit

Depends what I'm doing. If I'm at work I absolutely hate it. But that's largely because I have a physical job and my uniform is not at all suited to hot weather. If I'm on a day off and can enjoy it in shorts and t-shirt then awesome!!

Is it common for people who are born in the UK to say they are “Irish” or “Italian” if they have a parent from there?

TicksAndBricks@reddit

OK. I was meaning more recently. As in 20 years ago people were more welcoming. Sadly we're heading back towards a 70's style of racism. Though I still hold onto the fact that the majority of people did not vote for Reform/Restore as a sign that there is hope yet.

I wish I did. But my landlord won't pay to have it fitted and, because of the design of the building, there's nowhere to put the vent for a standalone one (coach house style with velux skylight windows).

What's life like in the UK on £2k/month?

Posted by ktrippar@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 116 comments

TicksAndBricks@reddit

It's Band 5 AfC, same for NQP Paramedics and other Band 5 staff in the NHS. It's a crap wage for the work we do. It's part of why we're losing staff who are choosing to take a, not very big, pay cut to go work in a less stressful job somewhere else that offers better hours.

Now consider your situation if you were not fortunate enough to split your bills with someone else.... Personally I don't think it's "bad" but I do think it's not enough to live comfortably on if you're single and it's below the average income in the UK outside of London.

Have the local paper heard about it? While talking to OFSTED is the official route, it takes time. I would try and kick up a stink at the local level. Do not cross any legal lines. But make sure as many people as possible know about it.
