Is 26 too late to turn your life around?

If you cant find a job, volunteer somewhere. It looks better to employers that you are doing something other than video games. Charity shops, scouts, soup kitchen, plenty of places crying out for volunteers. Take a look at your local adult learning centre. Often the courses are free if you are unemployed. For a lot of jobs you will need maths and English. Its worth a couple of mornings a week to get them done now.

How can I lose weight pretty fast?

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

Are you tracking your calories? If not then the NHS do a free weight loss calorie counting app. Its a great place to start. Have you talked to your doctor? I think that weight would put you in a category where they may be able to offer you support, like free gym membership. Be kind to yourself, recovery from surgery is not easy. Dont try to fix this overnight.

Do you ever skip the GP or A&E and go to a pharmacist instead?

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

Depends. For a cough or rash yes. But most of my A&E visits are for my clumsy family trying to break every bone in their body. Until they invent home xray I'm stuck with the long wait in A&E.

Would you pay to save the tooth?

I had the same issue. My NHS dentist would not do a molar root canal. Mine was fiddly, needed the microscope as my nerves were curved and had calcified. I paid £1500 all in including the cap. I would shop around as I think even for a molar root canal, that is overpriced. Implants are roughly the same price as what you have been quoted, and a root canal has roughly a 1 in 5 chance of not working. There is also the option once the bill gets that high to look abroad, Poland seems to get reccomended a lot.

Gas and electricity, we call someone. Everything else it's an evening spent on YouTube. I think we actually do a better job as its our home. I worried over my less than perfect miter joints on my tiling edges, then visted a friend who had paid a professional tiler to do her bathroom. They didn't even try and did a straight edge. I've seen too many bodge jobs filled in with silicone. I'll have a go myself thanks.

Do you keep sticky tape in the house?

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

I am never without sellotape or parcel tape. I actually brought a massive contraption from temu where you turn a wheel and it pre cuts little rectangles of tape perfect for wrapping. I think these should be handed out at birth to prevent years of losing the tape, losing the ends and hours of frustration when the tape gets all twisted.

Are you in England and willing to travel? Look at the NHS choices, right to choose and find a hospital with a shorter wait on the myplannedcare website. Then go back to your GP and ask them to change the refferal. My wait went from a year to 10 days. If you dont ask, they just bung you to the nearest hospital.

I have been on many a caravan holiday, but the caravan isn't the main appeal. If you have young children, then taking the somewhere with a beach, a playground, a fairground, an arcade and a venue full of very loud entertainment is heaven for them. Its a caravan or a butlins chalet..

If your partner wanted a dog but you didn’t, what would you do?

Posted by damned-n-doomed@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 511 comments

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

Absolutely not. I love dogs, like to play with dogs, I'm doggy friends with the neighbours dogs. I am far from a dog hater. But they seem to need a level of care similar to a toddler. One that never actually grows out of being a toddler. Its a massive life changing commitment, or the dog suffers. You are being kind by saying no.

Who is responsible for unused fenced-off land behind flats?

Posted by als07_1@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 4 comments

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

Go to the land registry, find the bit of land on the map, then click on it and buy the title deed. I think it was £8 last time I did one? That will give you the name of the owner. If its fallen into disrepair, the council will have made them fence it off so people dont hurt themselves on it. Legally, that's just about all they have to do. You can contact them to ask what is going on with it, but they dont have to tell you. Land can sit derelict for years while waiting for planning disputes, waiting for other land to become available, companies going bankrupt, inheritance.... a bit of land large enough for 2-3 houses has sat derelict by my parents house for 30 years.

I have a badger living in my garden that is absolutely decimating my grass, what can I do?

Posted by CazzaMcSpazza@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 169 comments

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

Agreed. Neighbours tried to build a fence, the badger saw it as a personal challenge. He went through wood, weldmesh, when he added a concrete strip he dug underneath it. We now have a badger door big enough for the badger but too small for the dogs.

Hmmm. Having children is wonderful. But your whole world shifts as your children have to come first in everything. It doesn't matter what deadline or important meeting you have, when nursery calls to say your child has a temperature, your week is done. Have you discussed with your partner who will be doing the lions share of the organising and childcare? Do you have a good family support system nearby? If you want to continue your career, you need to think about how much support you have on hand.

Nope. Can't remember what year it was, but as a child I can remember a horse falling and seeing it laying there not moving while the horses had to run around around it. It struck me then that something was not as fun as all the grownups were making it out to be. I have never bet on it.

Why do homemade curries never end up tasting like the ones you get at the Indian takeaway?

Posted by JayR_97@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 103 comments

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

You have to cook a base sauce first, takes about 3 hours, then let it cool, blend it smooth then cook the actual curry. We have got a few curry recipes spot on, but its a mammoth cooking job. We now do it all in one day and make enough to fill 2 shelves of the freezer. If you follow the recipe properly, you will be horrified how much oil goes in there.....

Why are more couples having children without getting married?

Posted by vforvictory_cbird@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 132 comments

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

As a person who does not practice any religion, getting married was merely a way to get a modest tax discount and make inheriting shared property easier. Sharing the same surname across the whole family has small perks. Marriage is mainly a financial agreement, you agree to throw everything together in the same pot. Some people choose to share DNA with a person but still want separate finances. Its all fine. Weddings have really got out of hand, we tried to look at Weddings in the UK and cancelled it all as we didn't want to spend the next decade paying for it, a small ceremony abroad did the job.

Random kids insult me – how to react?

Unfortunately, yes, you shouldn't react and should move away. Not because its right but because they are bold and without consequences. You or your children could get seriously hurt. Even if by some miracle the police did come out quickly, all they would do is speak to the parents, who are invariably worse than the children.

Has anyone’s children been given Melatonin for sleep?

Posted by glitterjorts@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 100 comments

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

It can only be prescribed by a pediatrician here, no idea why they are so strict on it. If you suspect ADHD you may want to take a different approach to bedtime. Basically, throw everything you think you know out the window. Remove the bedtime and put the mattress on the floor, lots of people with sensory problems feel uncomfortable "floating" in the middle of the room. Add a resistance sock to the bed, its like a massive stretchy sleeve, then encourage kicking and wriggling. Ditch the calm bedtime reading and relaxing, and add some sensory imput. Bouncing, swinging, climbing pillow forts, spinning chairs.... I know it all sounds bonkers, but give it a week.

Would anything come of reporting child homeschooling in England?

Posted by BeneficialJuice2878@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 132 comments

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

It means suitable for the child. Many kids are Home ed due to disability, sen schools are massively overwhelmed. They couldn't draw up a framework for home education, because many kids will never be able to go past basic maths and English. It should be suitable for the individual child's abilities. So in other words, if shes 12, only doing basic KS1 work, then its not suitable, but it would depend on the child.

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

There is no rule about following the curriculum, just they a suitable education is being provided. There will be a department at your Local Authority that deals with homeschool children. They can contact your parents and ask for more details, and arrange a home visit. Although I see comments saying contact social services, they may not be a lot of help here.

About every 10 years or so. Or are we including when one of us does something in a dream and the other is iffy with us for a couple of days? Then probably every 2 years. Some people need the drama, and would consider it boring without a row every once in a while. I've seen couples go at it and every time they row, every slight since the second world war gets brought up. It seems tiring to me, but some people enjoy it🤷‍♂️ They are still together so I dont think how much you row has any real reflection on your relationship health.

How to stop over friendly neighbour?

Posted by CaliSoReddit@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 67 comments

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

Start opening the door in your coat, with your shoes on. Explain that you were just on the way out. When she starts chatting, apologise profusely that you really can't be late, then leave and go to tesco. Your spice racks should fill up nicely. If you like the soup, buy a 10 pack of containers( also tesco) and hand them to her, say you are so forgetful of returning hers that you brought your own. Hopefully, she will find this really cheeky and never make soup for you again. You could also play her at her own game. Make a really terrible soup , and when you return her container, give her a batch. She may rethink handing you food if you give her your own burnt offerings.

If the title deeds don't show who owns the fence then how do we find out?

Posted by mosho84@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 15 comments

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

Fences are optional. So really either of you could pay for it or split it. If you want to choose the style of fence to match your garden, pay for it. If you dont care, leave it. Although if either of you have dogs, you do have a responsibility to contain them, then you would want to pay for a fence.

Posted by Natural_Parsnip_5291@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 19 comments

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

A heated airer without a cover is pointless. I've seen some of the wattage use on these and they make no sense to me, for the time you need to have them on, you may as well use a tumble dryer and have the lot done quickly. A normal airer is fine. A dehumidifier is a complete game changer! Dry air heats faster so running it is great for your home in general. Chip in for some humidity sensors as well, they are cheap and great to have around. A decent 12L should dry everything overnight.

Neighbours drilling in the evening, what do I do?

Posted by Sad_Ziggy@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 8 comments

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

I think the first step it to politely tell them you can hear it. They may have no idea. If you never see them, push a note through the door explaining the noise is waking your child and could they please do drilling before bedtime. Invite them to pop in for a chat. Keep it friendly. If that gets ignored, then you can get your local council involved, but its always worth trying to stay on good terms if you can.

Repulsive_State_7399@reddit

You need to check your local council guidelines on nuisance noise. It's not the case that it's only considered to be breaking the rules if it's after a certain time. If it's most days, it will still be classed as a nuisance. Hopefully, you are emailing the council rather than ringing? Start logging every time it's a nuisance. You should also find your local councillors from the council website and email them. Cc them in with every noise complaint. It will depend on how habitual it is. A few days a week would be, but you mention when it's sunny. If it's only every 2-3 weeks, then the council won't really do anything.
