Do you keep sticky tape in the house?
Posted by DangerousDisplay7664@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 98 comments
So a friend just told me that she doesn't have sellotape in the house unles it's Christmas. I said surely it's something that you keep at home all year round as you have use for it throughout the year and she says no, she buys a roll every year just before xmas then uses it all.
Am I the wird one here? I have a roll of clear tape, a roll of brown parcel tape, and a roll of double-sided tape in the drawer at all times! š³
pm_me_your_amphibian@reddit
I have more kinds of tape than I remember I have
Smeeble09@reddit
Got sellotape, wide packing tape, masking tape, electrical tape, heavy duty fabric lined tape, double sided thin tape and double sided carpet tape.
So yeah, got some.Ā
Auntie_Cagul@reddit
Yes.
Sellotape, cellotape, paper tape, double sided tape, extra strong double sided tape, parcel tape, glue, glue dots.
thekittysays@reddit
Don't forget the masking tape!
Auntie_Cagul@reddit
OMG I have that as well...
Tattycakes@reddit
Duct tape!
Auntie_Cagul@reddit
I forgot about that one. I have that too. Plus electrical tape.
Marshwiggletreacle@reddit
Surely every household should have what I have
Clear tape for presents Brown tape for parcels Double sided tape for crafts, pictures etc Duct tape incase your chimney falls off or to tie up burglars Electrical tape for electrically inclined thingies That rubbery tape for taps and well just taps and plumbingy stuff.
Cassette tapes for nostalgia and I think we're done.
colin_staples@reddit
Question for your friend :
What happens when they finish wrapping their Christmas presents and have half a roll of sticky tape left over? Do they throw it away? Or do they exactly use an entire full roll every Christmas and never, ever have any left over?
Second question for your friend :
Do they never wrap things at any other time of the year? Such as birthdays?
philgot4049@reddit
The OP said "then uses it all". I can only assume that it gets wrapped around and around the last present until it's all gone and the unfortunate recipient just has to deal with it.
"Damn crazy aunt" he mutters as he hacks away at the inch of tape entombing his socks.
Tattycakes@reddit
I feel like this post must be a troll because both of those scenarios are exceptionally peculiar
Jacktheforkie@reddit
I have several rolls of various types
PurpleOctopus6789@reddit
So she just bus it and throws it away? How very environmentally focused of her.
No, but seriously, I know people who do this types of things but not purposefully. usually, they have something like ADHD and they plan on using it again but put it somewhere and it gets lost.
Personally, yes, if I buy a roll of something and it doesn't get used, it's kept in a place that I will be easily able to find it when its needed.
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
Yes, of course. No double-sided tape though, never found much need for that when you can just make a little loop using regular sellotape.
evenstevens280@reddit
If you create a loop then there's a gap between both sides, though...
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
yes, but it's normally only needed for sticking stuff in cards or loosely attaching stuff, in my experience.
I'm not trying to make a DIY Tracy Island.
evenstevens280@reddit
Gift wrapping with double sided tape is game changing. It looks so much better.
Specialist-Web7854@reddit
I use gold circles and stars you can get on a roll, for most parcels. They look pretty, are paper not plastic, and you donāt have to faff around cutting tape.
thecatsothermother@reddit
If you have a keen eye and a steady hand, you can use double sided tape to splice a cassette. (yes, I am showing my age here!)
ribenarockstar@reddit
It IS a banging tune (I clicked through knowing exactly what it was going to be)
pix1985@reddit
Not if you flatten it out so exactly half of it is stuck to one surface and half to the other
palpatineforever@reddit
you dont need double sided tape till you find out how usful it really is, then you can't live without it.
h00dman@reddit
I think I learnt that trick from Art Attack š
AdaandFred@reddit
There's lots of half-used rolls of tape all over my house. Does she not give presents at any other time of the year? And what if she doesn't have enough tape or Christmas or has some leftover? Does she throw the rest of the roll away?
kjus13@reddit
I don't wrap presents in paper, I see it as pretty wasteful. She might think the same except for Christmas.
AdaandFred@reddit
What do you do with presents you're posting? I wrap presents in cloth wrapping if I'm giving the gift in person but can't afford to be sending people my re-usable wrapping!
Hunter037@reddit
I don't use wrapping paper either but still have tape in the house for other purposes. It's very good planning to buy enough presents to use exactly one roll of sellotape with none left over!
Specialist-Web7854@reddit
I have clear tape, sticky dots, gaffa tape, brown tape, parcel tape, patterned parcel tape, patterned washi tape, double-sided tape, extra strong double sided tape, and probably several other similar things scattered around the house.
Petrichor_ness@reddit
Now I'm wondering if I'm the weird one?
Parcel tape is with the wrapping paper, gorilla tape and electrical tape are with the DIY stuff.
(for context, I'm a digital marketer and don't have kids)
abyssal-isopod86@reddit
I have clear packing tape, brown packing tape, generic "sellotape", masking tape in white and blue in 2 different sizes, Scotch tape, washi tape and electrical tape in 4 different colours plus plumbers tape š
idlewildgirl@reddit
How do you even use up a full roll
KaidaShade@reddit
Yes, of lots of different types, but I'm big into a lot of different crafts so I need it regularly
jmabbz@reddit
I keep it on the roof.
IcyPuffin@reddit
I always have some. Its not just useful at Christmas - there are birthdays throughought the year so it will be needed then. It is useful for sticking down envelopes - although this use is getting less and less.
It is useful for gettibg pet hair off clothes if you have no lint roller to hand.
Many reasons to have some abd i reckon it would be pretty normal to have a roll stored in a drawer, even if you dont use it a lot.
snaphunter@reddit
Who uses a whole roll of tape every Christmas? Is your friend hermetically sealing each gift?
DameKumquat@reddit
I probably get through three rolls at Christmas. Reminds me, I should buy a couple spares now, because they cost 3x the price in December.
Competitive_Rub_9590@reddit
Ours is kept in the cutlery drawer and stays there we donāt use it that often tbh unless wrapping presents for birthdays etc
benjymous@reddit
Yeah, we usually buy a new roll every year, so there are a multitude of half used rolls of various ages littered around the house.
Tiny_ghosts_@reddit
Same, and yet can never find one when I need it!
Dutch_Slim@reddit
In my house thatās because the kids have āborrowedā it!
ApplicationSouth8844@reddit
Your friend is chatting BS.
atomiclax@reddit
Do they not give anyone birthday presents? We always have sellotape in stock at home
linkheroz@reddit
Sellotape, parcel tape, clear wide tape, duct tape, double sided foam tape, UHB tape. Just a few that's always handy to have around
PengyLi@reddit
Same, we have a "tape drawer" in the sideboard!
vipros42@reddit
I've got like 8 different types of tape, at least. How much do they use at Christmas to not have a roll left? Or do they just bin it once they've used the trivial amount required for wrapping presents?
1968Bladerunner@reddit
Yes, multiple types on weighted & handheld dispensers for easy one-handed operation.
Between birthdays & other presents, & sending / returning parcels, it's always handy to have nearby.
Master_Sympathy_754@reddit
Loads, and glue, just in case.
Sad_Cardiologist5388@reddit
Yes always
DollySheep32@reddit
There's some sellotape about three feet away from me in a drawer right now.
Djinjja-Ninja@reddit
Sticky tape on a dispenser (plus spare rolls), brown parcel tape (with a roller thing), silver gaffer tape, masking tape (both blue and beige) in various widths, electricians tape, reinforcing tape (for the inside of RC car shells), and double sided tape (regular and 3m foam) in various widths.
Everything other than the regular tape and parcel tape lives on a kitchen roll holder.
rebelallianxe@reddit
I have around 5 rolls with random amounts used at the moment. I do sell quite a lot on vinted though and they don't always give digital label option.
MountainMuffin1980@reddit
Of course. It's always useful.
Calm_Criticism9544@reddit
Yep, I never thought to myself, its not Christmas now, I''ll throw it away, haha.
WitShortage@reddit
Nah, I would say your friend is the unusual one. I have sellotape, parcel tape, duct tape and electrical tape in the house pretty much all the time.
sihasihasi@reddit
Yes
Onlyfangz@reddit
We have sellotape, duct tape, electrical tape, crafting tape, you name it but I am also an impulsive person that uses these in my various "omg I've found my craft for life" moments that definitely do not keep me entertained for life
AdministrativeShip2@reddit
I have a crate of various specialised tapes and glue.Ā It lives next to my crate of rivets, nails and staples.
If I had space id take up welding.
Late-Champion8678@reddit
Yes, in every room as I usually forget where it is.
Moppo_@reddit
How many gifts is she wrapping that she uses the whole roll in one Christmas? And surely at some point she might've needed a second, and that one goes unused and lies around sll year.
EyeAware3519@reddit
What does she do? Wrap all of her presents then throw the rest of the roll away? Or does she measure out all of tape on the roll to make sure it's all used on the presents?
theModge@reddit
Off the top of my head, you could choose:
From the various stashes around my house. There's probably more (such as self-amalgamating tape) but I don't know where everything is having not finished moving in.
Maybe I should cut down?
Manifestival1@reddit
Always have tape.
Sharp_Budget_4416@reddit
Three rolls in the drawer, none of them ever where they're meant to be when you actually need one. The one you reach for is always missing because the kid's been using it to repair something I haven't noticed yet. Parcel tape gets refilled every couple of months, sellotape probably twice a year.
Draigdwi@reddit
I have 2 boxes of different tapes. Leftovers from several moves to another country.
ImFamousYoghurt@reddit
How does she always use exactly the amount on 1 roll of tape? Does she have to carefully choose gifts which are the right size so it always uses the up 1 roll perfectly?
Goldman250@reddit
I have some in the house, leftover from Christmas because I donāt use it all. Iām sure Iāll use it once or twice between Decembers.
killit@reddit
I have a box in the garage full of rolls of unbranded clear sticky tape, sellotape branded tape, brown parcel tape, gaffer tape (black and silver), double sided tape, electrical tape, masking tape, and circuit board tape.
I realise I might have issues.
Fioreborn@reddit
Yes.
I've got lots of different tapes in the house. Duct, sellotape, insulating, double sided, masking, fabric.
I'm a crafter.
WelshBen@reddit
I've got slim and wide clear tape, some waterproof tape, some brown tape, and some 'fragile' marked tape.
clivehorse@reddit
I have an entire drawer in my DIY cupboard for various kinds of tape. Normal sticky tape, double width (like clear parcel tape), brown packing tape, duct tape, masking tape for painting walls, masking tape for painting pictures, decorative paper tape, electrical tape (various colours), silicon tape, PTFE tape, velcro tape.
VolcanicBear@reddit
I have sellotape on one of those roller things, parcel tape, duct (sic?) tape, double sided tape, masking tape, scotch tape, electrician's tape... Probably some more kinds of tape that I'm forgetting.
Oh! Weird tape for running that I've never used.
Lowermains@reddit
I do, do I know where it is? NO it is probably in the same place as lost socks go, I imagine.
Scarred_fish@reddit
There are 5 rolls of various kinds of tap on my desk as I type this. Definitely at least a dozen elsewhere throughout the house and shed. From 8mm film repair tape to 150mm wide gorilla tape, they all have their uses!
palpatineforever@reddit
tie them together? I find it is easier to find a massive loop of sellotape rolls than one roll.
I have a loop for household sellotape, double sided normal and a bit of masking tape,
Then I have loop for DIY, which is duct tape, more masking tape, the good double sided etc.
TimedDelivery@reddit
I have two junk craft obsessed children so clear tape and masking tape (both plain white and coloured) at as essential in our house as toilet paper
elhazelenby@reddit
I usually keep some sellotape in my flat all year. Comes in handy quite often.
Repulsive_State_7399@reddit
I am never without sellotape or parcel tape. I actually brought a massive contraption from temu where you turn a wheel and it pre cuts little rectangles of tape perfect for wrapping. I think these should be handed out at birth to prevent years of losing the tape, losing the ends and hours of frustration when the tape gets all twisted.
Drwynyllo@reddit
Of course.
And several types -- clear tape (Sellotape), parcel tape, gaffer tape (black and silver), double-sided tape, electrical tape, masking tape, PTFE, etc.
FraGough@reddit
Regular tape, scotch tape, packing tape, I think I have some low tack double-sided somewhere. And the most useful of all, duct tape.
ClericalRogue@reddit
Yeah, regular tape and duct tape live in the odds and sods drawer alongside tacks, string, glue, a spare torch, candles, random keys we keep just in case they were important, and that unopened pack of weird batteries we bought for something very specific, then never needed.
palpatineforever@reddit
Surely you buy it after christmas when it is on sale,
Then you buy it again in July when you can't find it and need to wrap a gift, then over time you accumluate a lot of rolls till one day you put them all in one drawer and it becomes the tape drawer.
Devify@reddit
I get her. I think I have a roll leftover from Christmas wrapping but I don't really buy tape just to have some. If I'm out I'll just buy a roll next time I need one.
uncertain_expert@reddit
Letās see: kitchen: large clear sellotape in a dispenser Odd and soda drawer: brown packing tape, foam double-sided tape, 25mm masking tape. Laptop bag: small sellotape in simple dispenser. Workshop: 50mm masking tape, 50mm double-sided carpet tape, gaffer tape, self-amalgamating tape, pyre tape. Shed: copper foil tape.
buginarugsnug@reddit
Yeah we have sellotape, parcel tape, duct tape and masking tape all at any one time.
What does do on birthdays?
RetroRegretso@reddit
She's the wirdo.
McLipstick@reddit
stickyback plastic
Suspicious_Banana255@reddit
Yes we have lots of different tape in the house, definitely couldn't do without celotape all year
bio4m@reddit
Its your friend thats weird. But maybe she doesnt need tape for day to day stuff ? I have a bunch of different rolls of tape, half my house is held up with duct tape... (Gorilla tape is my go to brand)
Imaginary_Finger7844@reddit
I have at least four rolls of it.
Demeter_Crusher@reddit
You should have 2-3 rolls of silver duct-tape too!
AirlineSevere7456@reddit
Always need brown parcel tape for returning parcels or duct tape for DIY repairs. Even have electrical tape for hiding wires etc.
NortonBurns@reddit
Sticky tape is always in our lives. You get a new one when the last one runs out. Even if the rest of the year my consumption could be measured in centimetres/month, it's always 'just there'.
I have clear in two widths, brown, double-sided & carpet tape.
Froggatt34@reddit
I buy a load at Christmas for obvious reasons then the leftover is just kinda just, there? It's not like I throw the rest away
blondegirli@reddit
All year round as I return parcels a lot š¤£
PopperDilly@reddit
I have normal tape SOMEWHERE in the house but i rarely use it
YOF626@reddit
I have a roll of clear tape on one of the wee dispensers.
Psychological-Bag272@reddit
I'm like you but I do a lot of online purchase so need sticky tape when packing things up for return.
