It used to, but I got over myself. Plenty v smart people just don’t do words as well, autocorrect is a bit of a bitch, not everyone got the education they needed, others don’t care, some believe a full stop on a sentence comes over as aggressive. I get madder about US bias in grammar and spelling in global software.

What’s the most irrationally annoying thing your in-laws do that they’re absolutely convinced is “helpful”?

Annoying, but hoarders usually have problems throwing things out that they strongly associate with happy memories. How about inviting the kids to turn it into ‘art’ to give back to nana! The point is to politely dissuade them from giving you junk.

Pass it on to the charity shops after a couple of weeks. If in-laws bring up the items, casually tell them you are teaching the kids how to share and recycle. At the very least you will help them declutter all the childhood stuff from the family home so you won’t have to do it later!

Can I stop my child being advertised to at school?

It’s true, schools are underfunded. There’s no shame in saying no. If the kid really wants music lessons, start them off with a simple keyboard on their computer and get them to learn to read music. I’m sure there’s some great tutorials on youtube. If they show further interest, check out what’s available in your area for musical fun. A love of music is a gift for life and learning to read play and listen to it can boost academic performance and confidence.

I’m not sure what the Oxford comma is, but I believe it is used after the word “and” in a list. This feels very wrong to me and I shall add it to my list of AI tells.

You used to heat water using coal and it was expensive so you didn’t just let money wash down the sink, the hot water was delivered through a different system of pipes and plumbed into one tap. Cold water was kept in a separate system so it was not contaminated by grey water or sewage backflow. A plug in the sink meant you didn’t waste water and could mix it to the required temperature yourself. I remember having a council house that had no hot water, just cold taps. I used a washing machine to heat water then pumped it into the bath. This was in 1974! But yes, I agree mixers are much better

Cheap fast food with no nutritional value means the body constantly craves nutrients and so people just keep eating, mainly flour, fat, sugar and industrial fillers. Teach nutrition and domestic science at school and give the kids decent wholesome food they are proud to eat. It would pay back big time in public health savings and I believe transform our food culture.

What classic British books would you actually recommend?

Posted by EggRavager@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 891 comments

Nettinonuts@reddit

As a child I devoured many classics. Stand out favourites were The Sam Pig books by Alison Uttley, Wurzel Gummidge (Barbara Euphan Todd), the Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham, all the E Nesbit books (including The Phoenix and the Carpet, Five Children and It, The Railway Children), the Just William series (Richmal Compton), just loved Ronald Searle’s works featuring Nigel Molesworth (How to be Topp, Back in the Jug Agane, St.Trinians)… Thinking back on these they were all rather old fashioned classics that were quite humorously subversive and distinctly British.

What is the solution to mix water from separate hot and cold taps in the sink?

Posted by buddhikamn@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 14 comments

Nettinonuts@reddit

I’d start by putting the plug in the sink and turning on the hot tap. If the water gets too hot too fast for the bowl size then I would turn off the hot tap and add some cold. I’m sure you navigate many more complex problems each day, likely with more risky outcomes, keep up the good work!
