when I was able to eat cheese I would always ask for beans on top of cheese just so the cheese could melt as I hated the cold cheese on top of hot things
The potato should be scooped out, mixed with the cheese. Then placed back inside the skin and liberal amounts of beans and more melted cheese poured over the top.
The cheese should go below the beans, the potato and the beans should be hot enough to melt the cheese. A small sprinkle on top to be fancy if you like
Cheese below beans just means that the cheese has double heat, from the potato and the beans and it all congeals into one big bit of cheese
I can’t find that appetising at all, I’d much rather have the cheese on after, as in the above picture it gives you a hell of a lot more flexibility on how much cheese you want per bite

If you want actual melt cheese with substance then it needs to go on top.
Happy for some to go on the bottom AND on top, but the bulk of cheese should be on top. It should melt anyway as long as your beans are hot enough.
I see it as this. With beans on toast I put cheese on top, so it should be the same with a potato. I had a jacket potato with Bolognese yesterday and I put parmesan on top, not under.
No, I know shit cheese. I use quite a variety of chese. Occasionally shit cheese if I have a particular need but also normal decent cheese and was subscribed to a luxury cheese delivery for a while lol. I really like cheese.
Any cheese can melt, but the expensive stuff melted the most! It was delicious but a soft, creamy, but strong tasting cheese. Melted in your mouth, was amazing. But also melted when warm.
I'm not talking about oil "leaking" out, I'm talking about the whole cheese just melting past the point of being soft ans turning into oil! It happens with all cheese depending on the heat.
It's the opposite. More mature and aged cheeses produce more oil when they melt. Younger less mature cheese is more "melty". As maturation takes a not insignificant amount of time it costs more.

This all the way. Butter mashed into the potato, seasoning, grated cheese. Potato will be hot enough to melt the cheese especially with beans on top. Then more cheese on top of the beans . And seasoning. Give it a couple of minutes for the cheese to melt a little. Then eat. Hungry now. Guess what I'm going to be having for lunch

I'm not being serious, I love potatoes and I love beans...but I have yet to try them together like this. I have however eaten fried potatoes and pinto beans..🤤🤤🤤🤤

If it’s baked beans like in the picture, it really doesn’t matter. However if it’s just cheese and the baked potato then it has to be melted. Also a chilli con carne filling, I would have the cheese melted, still wouldn’t matter if cold cheese was sprinkled on the top, would partially melt anyway.
Packets of pregrated cheese lose all flavour when they melt. So no, in that circumstance I'd prefer it not melted. At home, obviously you've got to have enough cheese for the bottom layer to be melted by the beans temp and the top layer to be insulated enough not to melt, with that sweet spot in the middle with wilting cheese.
I really don't think the cafes I frequent (generally around bus stations and train stations) have this much care and attention to detail. "Get what your given"
If it's pre-shredded cheese, you should give it a rinse before use. As it may use a non-clumping agent to prevent the cheese from becoming one big blob while in transit.
Doing this may help in the cheese spreading/melting evenly.
The heat of the spud and the filling, whether it's hot beans, chilli con, or what ever, should met the cheese yes. If I got a spud like that I'd question why it's not hot.
There should be 2 layers of cheese. One at the bottom after butter. Add beans and sprinkle more cheese on top. I don't mind if the top is melted because I have that backup cheesy bottom layer.
I’m not leaving it but I also am not shoving a whole jacket potato in my mouth as soon as it’s done! Obviously it starts off lovely but by a minute or so it’s started congealing for me
You got two options from here... Mash it all in, then it's all melted, or you can wack it in the microwave for 30 seconds, then you've got the cheese juicy.
It should be layered as such - butter, salt + pepper ,cheese, beans, cheese, small topping of beans.
This way it's nice and empty with the top layer of cheese still have some texture
If your food isn't stone cold when it's given to you, these cheese will melt from the heat of the rest of the food. No need to deliberately melt it first.
I prefer to add the beans to the cheese crush up some of the beans to thicken the tomato sauce and it creates the most soul healing beans. Best food when you’ve had a crappy day or just wanna feel like you’re back at mums.

I swing both ways on this depending on what else is on the potato. For the above with beans, I would melt it, for a simple baked potato with cheese and onion, I would not as I want the onions raw and melting the cheese cooks the onions too.
No, it will melt down soon enough. My canteen sells the cheese separate and you make up your own. Suspect same set-up - potatoes cooked (they have a special cooker for them) and then kept warm until toppings added to order or by you. Cooking a potato properly takes a while- not everywhere microwaves their food.
Personally I prefer unmelted cheese on a baked potato. My go to is tuna mayo on the potato, cheese on top of that. Mush it all into the potato and it's like a deconstructed fishcake.
The ingredients have such a high baseline synergy that pretty much any conceivable permutation works. I think that's what makes it such a powerful dish.

If I'm making this at home, I add the grated cheese to the beans as I heat them up. You get a perfect mixture of beans and gooey hot cheese. Add sriracha for a little bit extra heat.

No, you put cold shredded cheese on the potato, which should then melt because of the heat of the potato and beans. If it doesn't melt there's something wrong with the potato, not the cheese itself.
I would hope that the potato + topping would be hot enough to melt any cheese added on top (unless the topping is meant to be cold, like tuna mayo).
In a baked potato + beans, I personally like mash some butter into the potato, put the grated cheese on, then top with beans.
I guess the theory is the potato and toppings should be hot enough to melt it, but reality doesn't match up to that. People flogging potatoes at car boot sales don't really care if their product is flawed. People buying them probably don't care enough to ask as your comment suggests. I'd hope they could at least zap it in a microwave.
