Are there any appliances which are not built to break?

We’ve had multiple washer dryers through an insurance product they don’t last long. We paid for one 10 years ago and are now on our fourth, only now paying £7-8 a month. One of the engineers explained it to us succinctly: you’re basically asking a machine to do two that are polar opposite of each other (wet the drys, dry the wets) and the machine internals just can’t cope.

Helicopter is not a hybrid word made up of Heli and Copter, it is Helico, as in Helix, as in Spiral, and Pter meaning wing, as in Pterodactyl.

What Unsolved True Crime Mystery In The UK Which You Think Deserve More Attention?

I can’t believe no attention has ever been paid to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, no news stories, no Tv programmes, nothing. Shocking.

Why does it feel illegal to drink in public?

Posted by Thepixeloutcast@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 102 comments

MrTimofTim@reddit

Absolutely, but the question was why does it _feel_ illegal, and laws stating that, however little they are enforced add to that feeling- in my opinion at least.

MrTimofTim@reddit

I think _some_ town centres ban it. It’s also officially illegal to be drunk in public, and drinking in public is a decent way to make people think you’re drunk.

Has anyone ever bought a car without viewing it in person first?

Posted by Jammastersam@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 97 comments

MrTimofTim@reddit

Bought mine via Arnold Clark. Just paid the £100 refundable deposit to reserve it before I saw it in person. No issues, and ended up, test driving it, liking it and then buying it and it’s been fine.

How should I send my bank statement to the NHS?

Posted by vick5516@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 18 comments

MrTimofTim@reddit

Only what happened to me a few years ago- can't say if this is still the case. If you really need a bank statement, your bank will be able to send one to you in a few days- some bank apps (Monzo for example) allow you to generate a PDF immediately.

How much should I pay a plumber to get my toilet unclogged? (Scammed?)

Posted by TranquiloHermano94@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 44 comments

MrTimofTim@reddit

I paid £95 for similar last year, we had a second toilet so it wasn't mega urgent. If you called needing it urgently- call out like- I can see £250 not being inappropriate. If it was just a "I'm free next Wednesday" £250 seems quite steep. NW England btw, so add London tax to the price I paid...

MrTimofTim@reddit

I had this happen for a prescription charge rather than dentistry, but I imagine it's the same people- I just sent them a screenshot via email of my banking app with the transaction highlighted with the date clearly shown, they accepted it without any further questions.

Posted by T33FMEISTER@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 8 comments

Never been to Malta, but generally with travel, I’ve seen better rates for cash in the UK, but really the best exchange rates are on card, in the local currency.
