What is the strangest pub name you've ever seen?

Posted by roamingnomad7@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 361 comments

Inspired by a rewatch of 'Peep Show' recently, and Super Hans' classic naming idea of 'The Swan & Paedo'.

Someone opened a bar in Anfied some years ago called The Cockwell Inn. The council made them change it. I think it became The Cockwell.
View on Reddit #57226917

3lbFlax@reddit

We’ve had a Cock Inn in Northampton for many, many years (going back I think to the 16th century. It was The Cock Hotel for a while (“I’m new in town! Where can I stay?” “Oh, I know just the place.”), then briefly just The Cock, and now it’s an Inn again. Basically they’ve tried pretty much everything except taking the Cock out.
View on Reddit #57250917

View on Reddit #57442235

coak3333@reddit

Come on, there are Cock Inns all over the country. One of the oldest pubs in England, The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans. Built in the 11th century. You can still see the Cockpit where the birds fought.
View on Reddit #57252348

3lbFlax@reddit

Sure, I’ve seen a few of them myself and I certainly wouldn’t claim it as a town exclusive. For all I know they hold cock fights there to this day.
View on Reddit #57264818

coak3333@reddit

Well, it was outlawed in 1835, along with badger baiting. It still goes on in the UK, but it's a very underground sport. Dog fighting is a bigger sport, I think because the fights from what I've seen in documentaries, and articles read, are over very quickly, especially if they are wearing cockspurs. Some birds become fine swordsman. I'm a Tottenham fan, so started looking at this history from a young age. I've always thought the official name of Cockfosters is a very polite entry into Wikipedia. Street names in older towns can give a lot away. There is a Cock Lane in the City of London, opposite Milk Lane and Wood Lane. But when I had a look at some history books, it wasn't advertising for that sort of bird.

Pulled the pint, served my coke too, told him the price then said "oh she can't stay, no under 18s but she can drink it outside", I'll add they had no seating just standing out. He didn't pay, just necked his, told me to neck mine and walked out. It's the Lady Mildmay now.

We've got The Noose and Monkey in Aberdeen Always thought it was weird til I found out why. >She was given it’s unusual name by it’s previous owner and licensee who originated from Hartlepool. The story goes that during during the Napoleonic Wars, fishermen from Hartlepool watched a French Warship founder off their coast. The only survivor was a monkey, dressed in French military uniform, presumably to amuse the officers on the ship. The fishermen assumed that this must be what Frenchmen looked like, and after a brief trial they summarily executed the poor monkey by hanging.  (From their website)

There was a "Horse & Groom" in a nearby village run by the dourest man you've ever met that all the locals, understandably, called the "Hearse & Gloom".
