Do you confidently pronounce all World Cup player names, or do you hesitate sometimes?

Posted by Sad_Art_@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 27 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

I would say I am a very average American. Besides Pele, I can’t say I have ever pronounced or will ever pronounce another World Cup players name. This of course assuming that World Cup is the soccer tournament that was in the news for having high prices.

Other than Texas and California, which states display the most "state pride"?

Posted by bangkaynagulay@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 837 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

The premise of your initial statement is incorrect. Californians don’t have state pride. Texas and New York, followed by Florida.  Then any of the Great Lake states followed by the Carolina’s and Georgia. Once you go all the way down and then get through the territories, you will find all the state hating residents of our great state of California.

Do people usually adopt stray cats in the US ?

MostAsk855@reddit

I’ve adopted 4 cats that came into my yard over the last 20 years. Not sure if they were originally someone’s pet but they shouldn’t be outside endangering themselves and wildlife so I spoil them as inside only cats.

Is wearing "high waters" an age or regional thing?

Posted by JJacobJingleheim@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 435 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

Grew up in the 70s and 80s in Wisconsin and live in Vermont now. I have only heard short pants referred to as flooders or floods. I’m assuming high waters is both a regional and age thing.

Is Ronaldo really not that famous in America?

MostAsk855@reddit

I’ve never heard of him. Just googled him and didn’t ring a bell. I would think less than 2% of us can even name one doctor player and of that, the vast majority would say Pele only because soccer had a brief stint of almost being popular in the early 1980s.

MostAsk855@reddit

I didn’t know who he was until I googled him just now and maybe the name is familiar? I would guess 80% don’t know who he is whatsoever, 15% know he’s a soccer player but wouldn’t be able to pick him out of a lineup, and 5% know who he is.

What do you admire on China?

Posted by Comfortable_Curve_99@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 51 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

I admire how they can commit a genocide against the Uyghur people but the world turns a blind eye to it because we like to buy cheap Chinese crap. Oh sorry, I misunderstood the question. I like how China can eliminate its citizens if they have a poor social score. Oops, still not the right answer. I like how China never invented anything with technology or improved anything without stealing other nations or corporations trade secrets.  Oops, still wrong. I like how they were our allies in ww2 and were always steadfast friends of USA.  Oops, that would be Taiwan.  I do love everything about Taiwan, after all they are the one true China.

How do Americans generally refer to kilograms in casual parlance? "Kilogram", "kilo", by the initialism kg ("kay-gee") or some other word?

Posted by cavendishfreire@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1371 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

I’ve only used the word kilo when referring to cocaine or an old Russian sub.  Thats it. Anyone that doesn’t work in your field probably would never use any form of kilogram.

Do Americans really move out at 18 or is that exaggerated?

Posted by Bulky-Blacksmith1960@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 127 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

I think most slowly move out at 18 or 19. The ones that go to university move out and back with semester changes and the ones that don’t move out and back with job changes or life changes. Typically by the time they are 23 they are out completely. So I will say 75% of the time moved out from 18-23.

Why is the right to own a gun so important to some Americans?

Posted by bojack_hursman@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 72 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

In your country, healthcare is probably a right. In America, owning guns is a right. We got our priorities messed up now but our country only exists because we had enough guns to tell a foreign king to piss off.  Guns made America and they are a huge part of our culture.  We have 1.5 guns per person here.

Dog, hotdog, wiener, and frank are all interchangeable and you are standing in line at a grill. If you say any of those, people will know what you are talking about.

How do you feel about this jury duty?

Posted by Axxtr@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 199 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

I’ve had to show up for jury duty twice so far but have gotten out of it both times by saying I believe that if someone is arrested they are probably guilty. I think a lot of people say stuff to get out of jury duty so I’m not really sure of the type that actually makes it to court. Jobless or without family, or just bored I guess. A jury here in America is definitely not going to be made up of your normal everyday people.

This is my 2nd house I’ve purchased. We have never gotten beyond nodding or waving and have lived in this house for 15 years.  Of the 6 people (house on each side and house across the street) I know one of their names and one of their dogs names. I helped carry in furniture once.  That’s it, that’s the extent of our relationship. So congrats whomever you are while you read this, You now know me better than my neighbors know me.

How early is too early to start up a lawnmower or use a power tool?

Posted by Grand_Raccoon0923@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 266 comments

If you do anything routinely loud before 9 you are a cocksucker. A one off home repair or something is fine but if you are firing up your lawnmowers at 7 you should at least have the courtesy to go quiet electric.

When you buy a house, do you own the house or the land or both?

Posted by ThePurpleRainmakerr@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 873 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

You own it all unless it is a condo, trailer, etc. Some neighborhoods also have HOAs so even though you do indeed own the property, you can’t do what you want with the property outside of normal things that you already have permission for.

Posted by _Sophie_0@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 103 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

All the kids I knew got plinkers when they were about 13. I bought my kids Remington 783s for their first rifle around 15. I don't think my daughter ever went on to buy anything more substantial but my son has moved on to big game hunting in Zimbabwe. Nobody I personally know ever bought a pistol for their kid. Just plinkers and hunting rifles.

How popular is Imane Khelif in the USA?

Posted by TheShyBuck@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 48 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

Not popular per se, but people that are familiar with the issue of men competing against women are familiar and people that follow women combat sports.  She would arguably have the highest name recognition of female boxers. This case here is complicated in that she has XY chromosomes which are male karyotype but she was raised as a girl and has always been female but has benefited from the hormones. Her body creates too much testosterone therefore being disqualified from the iba.  I feel for her and this is far more interesting and different than the men who grew up as male and then transitioned and compete against women.

Why do you celebrate your "Sweet 16" in the US?

Posted by Cooky09Ad@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 242 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

It’s just a social media girl thing that started about 20 years ago. Regular people celebrate it like any other year. 16 itself is a little special because drivers licenses are also typically received during that year.

Just a simple question from a european. What do you give to the women in your lives on march the 1st of every year?

Posted by Nice-Contest1499@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 427 comments

MostAsk855@reddit

Not my experience. I graduated over 25 years ago from a rural combined community school over an hour away from a city and we had a school resource officer who was with the county sheriff.  It was a k-12 and was about 1000 students total through all grades.  Mr Willis, if you are still alive- sorry that I didn’t pay attention in DARE and ended up smoking all the weed all the time.

Yes.  Clearly you are asking this because of all the horrifying things you have read here on Reddit.  It’s actually far worse in person.  It’s like we are Jews stuck in concentration camps during ww2. Anyone that supports ice would also support slaughtering Anne frank.  Please send help

I noticed this.  In Ontario near Sarnia it seemed to be the similar to most US ketchup flavor but around Vancouver, all the ketchup I had was much more vinegary and not as sweet.  Not bad, just different.
