Do you say “Punch Buggy” or “Slug Bug”?

All my life, when playing the game of hitting someone when seeing a Volkswagen Beetle on the road, I said “slug bug”, and so did everyone around me. But in the last couple of years, I’ve heard “punch buggy.” Especially since I got a VW of my own.
Nynasa@reddit
Here it was "Punchbuggy"! Punchbuggy no punch back
Downtown_Ganache6727@reddit
Yessss same where you from? PA here
Nynasa@reddit
NC!
Downtown_Ganache6727@reddit
I have never heard “slug bug” in my 40 years of life lol. It’s always been punch buggy, no punch backs lol
flootytootybri@reddit
“Punch buggy, no punch backs”
HackDaddy85@reddit
I’ve only ever heard pinch buggy. Like in Lilo & Stitch when Stitch throws the blue bug and says “blue punch buggy!”
VxGB111@reddit
Slug bug for me
RockShowSparky@reddit
slug bug
aracauna@reddit
Never heard punch buggy, just punch bug.
sluttypidge@reddit
It's "Slug Bug" in my family. Unless it's blue and then it's "Blue Punch Buggy" in a Stitch voice from Lilo and Stitch 2002.
NIN10DOXD@reddit
I only ever heard Punch Buggy until this thread.
throw_every_away@reddit
What the hell!? I’ve never heard punch buggy before and I’m forty years old, how is this possible?
brownstone79@reddit
I’m older than you and only ever heard punch buggy. Curious: did you have to call the color?
TheDude-Esquire@reddit
Our rules changed when the new beetles got popular. Then slug bug only applied to old models and color didn’t matter.
brownstone79@reddit
Ah yeah. The new beetles came well after my playing days hahaha!
cruzweb@reddit
I never heard "punch buggy" until I moved to New England.
brownstone79@reddit
It’s always interesting to see the variations in responses to questions like this.
throw_every_away@reddit
That was a variant, yes. It’d be like “green slug bug! punch No slug back!” You had to say that so they weren’t allowed to slug you back, of course. It was kinda a house rule, not all of my friends played that way. It just depended on where you were. The core of punching each other upon seeing a vw beetle never changed.
brownstone79@reddit
I suppose they were all house rules haha! Yes, we had the no punch back rule as well. We would call the color in case there were multiple bugs in view.
IllustriousRanger934@reddit
Only ever heard punch buggy in Virginia. Guess slug bug is regional
spacedman_spiff@reddit
What makes you think “punch buggy” isn’t regional to places that had buggys?
CinemaSideBySides@reddit
I'm surprised at the people saying they've never even heard punch buggy. I feel like it's shown up frequently enough in TV shows and movies.
pawsplay36@reddit
Name one.

I think Stich says it to Lilo in the original movie.

Native Californian here… it was always Slug Bug. Our family car was a 1968 VW Bug for 16 years of my life. We played Slug Bug from the back of our Slug Bug.
itsalro@reddit
Native Californian (however, Gen Z) that grew up in a classic vw household
Is punch buggy a uniquely newer thing? I swear I’ve only heard of punchbuggy growing up. Slug bug is very cool though
kbivs@reddit
I've never heard the term slug bug until reading this question. I was born in 1969 and it's always been punch buggy. I'm from Philly but live in NJ now
LeSkootch@reddit
Used to say punch buggy and I was born in '86. New Englander, though. From the comments I think it's more of a regional thing. Punch buggy definitely isn't something new. New England seems to be the Punch Buggy Republic while California seems to be the Slug Bug Dominion.
NIN10DOXD@reddit
My entire family has said Punch Buggy for generations. I wonder if it’s East vs West.
potchie626@reddit
I grew up in the 80s near Santa Cruz and only knew it as Punch Buggy.
SnoopySuited@reddit
Gen x East coaster. Always been punch buggy to me until I moved out here (norcal). Now I here both.
IthurielSpear@reddit
I grew up with slug bug in Northern California, my adult daughter says it’s punch buggy
Gertrude_D@reddit
Same. Or if another parent was picking us up from school and my mom was already home, we knew that as soon as we turned the corner, we could possibly see up to 4 slug bugs, so we got in the ready position and just started punching and yelling when the first one was spotted.
Low-Crow5719@reddit
SoCal. Slug bug too, but only green Beetles counted.
TheBotchedLobotomy@reddit
Starting to think slug bug is a California thing lol
dino-sour@reddit
I've heard and said both equal amounts. But I feel like it's been decades since I've seen one.
Kotetsuya@reddit
Punch Buggy and PT Bruiser (rather than PT Cruiser)
We also have a 'points' system. A convertable bug is 2 points/punches. A bug with flames is 3.
Same with a PT Cruiser. But if the PT Cruiser has two-tone color, wood paneling down the side, and is a convertable, it's 4 punches.
Logical-Pound-1065@reddit
I grew up saying “slug a bug.” Now I don’t see those cars anymore and this feels like a distant memory was just unlocked. One time, we were driving past a VW dealership and saw several of them in the lot, and me and my sister were trading punches and shouting colors out.
Okbrain_456@reddit
Slug Bug.
Shake307@reddit
The fuck is a "Punch Buggy"?
the-human-wrench@reddit
I still play slug bug all the time, but we call the color, like "Yellow one!" Wait til you hear about the Pinch Tit Cruiser.

Punch Buggy, never heard of slug bug and I'm in my 40s.
wytewydow@reddit
We call out "classic" and don't hit each other.
itdoes_doesntit@reddit
VW Beetle owners never did this. This only for those who were jealous they didn’t have a Beetle.
Jodanmawashigeri@reddit
I say: “Please stop punching me. I’m trying to drive.”
allaboutaphie@reddit
More importantly, do you get slugged anytime you give some1 a ride.. lol
DiHard_ChistmasMovie@reddit
We did the "slug bug" game when I was a kid. I hadn't heard of "punch buggy" until I picked my daughter up from school one day and she spotted one on the way home.
HotTamaleBallSak@reddit
Seems like an east vs west coast thing. I've never heard slug bug before
spacedman_spiff@reddit
“Punch Buggy” seems to be for places that had a buggies back in the day.
Proud-Delivery-621@reddit
Yeah everyone in the comments that I've seen so far who said slug bug is flaired for a state in the west and everyone who said punch buggy for a state in the east.
TheBraveToast@reddit
I'm in the middle and all my friends and I played slug bug, and banana whack for a yellow car
cruzweb@reddit
For me, it feels East Coast (up and down) vs the rest of the country.
I also grew up in downstate Michigan and heard mustard more than banana.
icspn@reddit
I think you're correct! I'm west coast, only heard slug bug.
MrSnrub87@reddit
No, it was slug bug in Michigan in the 80's and 90's. Definitely not an east vs west situation
Rammaukiin@reddit
Early 2000’s also. Slug bug was what I’ve always heard.

Ive always said slug bug my whole life, but ive heard others call it punch buggy. My fiance said he only had heard punch buggy until we got together, and he said slug bug makes so much more sense and sounds better. We definitely play slug bug in the car together still. And every time we are driving alone, and see a bug, we get excited and immediately disappointed that the other isnt there to slug.
workntohard@reddit
Never heard either of these growing up.
tsukiii@reddit
Slug bug.
In San Diego
8696David@reddit
Wtf? Punch buggy exclusively, also San Diego. This is such a weird one lmao
tsukiii@reddit
Where are your parents from though?
8696David@reddit
One from Seattle/San Diego (moved when she was 11), the other from Ohio. But I didn't learn it from them, I learned it from my peers.

parkz88@reddit
There was a scrap yard along my school bus route. They had everything including cars. They had like 10 punch buggys and when we'd past them the bus went into a backseat brawl. The bus driver would tell us the game was over if we go to wild. Fun times.
Proud-Delivery-621@reddit
Looking at most people with flairs on this thread, it looks pretty consistent that western states called it slug bug and eastern states called it punch buggy. Wonder why.
631Lifer@reddit
My kids played this many times on our family road trips. Then they came up with Smack-Donald’s, as less VWs were seen and more McDonalds. Thankfully it never got out of control lol
icspn@reddit
A related anecdote: I used to drive a Beetle and I loved driving past kids, because I'd see them all attack each other, lol.

NIN10DOXD@reddit
IDK. My grandparents also said punchbuggy from what I remember.

yozaner1324@reddit
Punch buggy sounds like what you'd hear in a show if "Slug Bug" was trademarked.
izyshoroo@reddit
I would say "(color) slug bug no tag backs"
Soldier8_1981@reddit
And also "Yellow Car." It was extra points if it was a yellow slug bug.
GeneseeJunior@reddit
Neither, because why would someone do that? 🤨
SirPonix@reddit
Punch buggy. My friends and I used to do it for cars with a headlight out and cars with wood grain on the side, too. We'd yell "pedittle" or "woody" and then frog someone
crashin70@reddit

be-kind-3000@reddit
Side note. Did you also play…. If you saw a car with only one headlight, the first one to hit the ceiling of the car gets to hit the other rider.
Gertrude_D@reddit
Yep! That one was more rare for my friends to know, but my mom and aunt taught it to us in the 70s. We called it padilly though - not padiddle as the other commenters are saying.
IndependentEffect202@reddit
Yes, weirdly, we called it "sex" and said that when touching the ceiling. Double points if the car with one headlight had 3/4 working headlights.
averysmartbear@reddit
You have to call out pididdle and then punch something: a person or an inanimate object. Sort of like a combination of punch buggy and knocking on wood.
jephph_@reddit
padiddle

But, more fundamentally, how would a younger sibling have exposed me to this game given that neither of us was aware of it?

Punchybuggy and then the color, e.g. "Punchybuggy blue!" Also we didn't hit each other, but we did keep score for bragging rights.
I've never heard of anyone who played it like us. Military family, I remember we were playing it that way when we were stationed in Germany just after the Berlin Wall fell. Don't remember whether we picked it up from other military kids or what.

I grew up in the 70s, moved to a few states, had kids and now a grandkid. We have never heard punch buggy and have always used slug bug

Wife and I always played slug bug. We went to Mexico on our honeymoon (years ago) and every other car was a Beetle. Apparently VW sold the tool & dye to a Mexican company where they produced even cheaper versions. On the bus from the airport to our hotel, all the other passengers were agast as the wife and I were slugging the shit out of each other. Someone asked, "Why are you doing that?" and we explained that it was our honeymoon, and laughed.
We agreed after that we would only play with actual Beetles, not any other VW (or VW like) product.
