Find out from your manager what kind of work you will be doing. Is it data analysis, or algirithms, etc. Go to the python institute.org website and work through the free course for python fundamentals. Two courses to do, I think. Then pick the free courses that you need for your job, and create lots of practice programs. Good luck ๐Ÿคž

It isn't a case of needing it, it's more a case of it tastes good, and people want to eat more of things they like the taste of. I think that it's a simple as that.

What would you do if you found a bank card on the street?

Posted by Rich-Item5337@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 296 comments

Middle--Earth@reddit

I once found someone's bank card on the doormat of a restaurant as I was leaving. I googled the name on it, contacted the person who confirmed that they had lost their card at that restaurant, found that they lived just a couple of miles away. I was going past their house on my way out so I offered to drop it off. When my young son and I knocked on the door it was answered by a young woman, who snatched the card off me and then gave me an insane grilling as to how I had come to possess the card! "Yes, but we were sitting at this table which was two tables away from the door, so can you explain to me how you found it on the doormat instead of next to our table??" etc etc. No 'thank you' either. Honestly, she made me feel like I had stolen it rather than being the good Samaritan returning it. It wasn't the last time that I saw a bank card or wallet in the street, but it was definitely the last time that I picked one up and tried to return it.

I'm a complete beginner and desperately need advice.

Not everyone is cut out for coding, and maybe this isnyfor you. There are lots of adjacent careers so maybe investigate one of those possibilities instead?

Is there a point where googling every other line means you're not actually learning?

You just need more practice. Then the 'rough idea of the logic' will sharpen up into 'I need to do this and I know how to implement it'. Experienced Devs still Google things, but the focus changes from the basic stuff to more complex things like hoe to implement a particular pattern. You will get there, but ten months isn't long enough.

Yeah, the funeral directors charge about that amount for what they call a direct cremation, but if you go to the crematory website and search for prices then you see the crematorium basic direct cremation price. Usually tucked away in smaller text further down the page!

The ashes were returned in a very basic no frills container, which was fine, as the ashes were later scattered so a permanent nicer container wasn't necessary. You can always hold a privately arranged memorial event later, or a celebration of their life to get closure.

Yeah, you speak to the crematorium direct to arrange it. My dad had what they call a 'direct cremation' which is no service and no mourners present. I just checked their website and the current price for that is now ยฃ585.

Was it actually a thing in Britain โ€œback in the dayโ€ for people to have all their teeth removed and get dentures relatively young, even when they still had some healthy teeth or is that one of those exaggerated stories?

Posted by Top_Mirror211@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 746 comments

Middle--Earth@reddit

My dad had all his teeth removed in one go and had a full set of dentures fitted, because he was terrified of going to the dentist but couldn't bear having toothache. He had a sweet tooth and poor teeth as a result. I remember that he was in his thirties, and the dentist came to our house and did it there. Afterwards, he looked like a chipmunk with his mouth stuffed full of cotton wool, and could only eat cool soup for what seemed like ages afterwards. Once he had his full set of new choppers through he was back to eating cakes and ice cream on a daily basis. His teeth were fine but he became rather fat!

Well, let me expand. In order to reach my facial exfoliating glove, my ex needed to open the bathroom cabinet above the sink - which held our personal grooming products - go to my side of the cabinet, and then pluck the glove from the section containing my facial toner, cleanser, face wash etc. All facial care products. To get the chemical products to clean the bathroom, he had to bend down and open the cupboard under the sink, reach past the cleaning sponges and rectangular Scrubbers, and pick up the Cif etc that were behind them. He didn't use the sponges, wipes, or bathroom scrubbers at all to clean the bathroom- just my facial cleaning glove. Then he would put the chemical products back in the cupboard below, and my glove back on top of my facial products in my side of the bathroom cabinet. To me, that felt like his actions were deliberately nasty, particularly since I am pretty sure that he had seen me using the glove on my face on more than one occasion prior to that. That's why I did what I did, and I don't regret a single thing.

I kept having problems with the skin on my face. From time to time it would randomly flare up itchy and flaky, with tight red angry patches. I was in a customer facing job at the time, so it was awful. I couldn't understand what was causing it. I was constantly changing skin products, soaps, shampoo, diet, to try and find the trigger. I went to the doctor repeatedly and tried umpteen different medications and creams, and none of them worked. The impulse to scratch my face was awful, and I was in misery for the best part of three years One day I walked into the bathroom to find my then husband was using my skin exfoliating glove to clean the sink. The glove that I used on my face. Using typical bathroom cleaning products.. He just laughed and thought that it was funny. No apology, nothing. Just said that he saw it in the bathroom and assumed that it was for cleaning the bathroom, as if a glove was really the best thing to use to clean a sink! I was pretty sure that he had seen me using it before on my face, although he claimed innocence. We had a big row. This was at a point in time when we were allegedly happily married, so I didn't understand his behaviour. It felt like an intentional passive aggressive thing, like a deliberate nasty thing. Maybe he was jealous of my success at work and wanted to bring me down a bit, I don't know. My viewpoint of him shifted completely as I realised that he knew exactly why I had suffered so badly with my skin, and yet he had said nothing. For the next few years, until we finally split up and divorced, every so often I would take his toothbrush and use it on the toilet ๐Ÿšฝ Particularly if I knew that he was planning a night out or would be attending a works posh dinner (where partners were allegedly not invited, because not once did he take me to a work event). His random and rather violent bouts of 'gastric flu' were truly horrible yet deeply satisfying to behold, and naturally I offered my full sympathy as I handed over the diarrhea tablets. Jim, if you're reading this, then I want you to know that you deserved every fart and cramp, and I regret nothing.

The books are quite old, so it's probably worth searching Amazon for something similar that isn't quite so old. It would be a pity if your son were discouraged by finding that numerous things had become obsolete and didn't work any more.

Uh, that second book is pretty old now, it was released in January 2012. I would recommend a more modern book as that one is a bit obsolete now, so the son might get a bit frustrated if a lot of things no longer work or exist.

(Generic question, help highly appreciated) When copying others, do you watch an entire tutorial to completion once, then try to rebuild it or do you copy everything they write?

Posted by SizeSure5723@reddit | learnprogramming | View on Reddit | 11 comments

Middle--Earth@reddit

I mean that I'll have the tutorial open on my second monitor, and in the first monitor I'll have my IDE open and I'll be typing away. So the tutor will say "ok, so now we are going to instantiate the first object by entering new object etc etc" and I'll be typing away as he is saying it. If I know how to do this bit, then I'll pause the tutorial and type what I think should go there, and then I'll play the tutorial again to see if that's the same as what the instructor has written. When I learn something new, I'll pause the tutorial and examine the new thing. I'll Google it and change bits if it, run the code and experiment with it, and generally play a bit to see what I can do with it and what the limitations are. Then I'll move on to the next bit. It means that by the time I've finished all of the tutorial I would know what all the code does, plus how it does it, and how I can adapt it to something else if I want to.

Middle--Earth@reddit

I do a fast skim through the whole tutorial then go back and type the code in as the instructor does it. If I know how to do some things then I skip ahead to the parts that I'm unsure about. You often find that little things might be incorrect or done slightly differently now, so be prepared to have to Google the odd thing!

I don't want one. I don't have a driveway, nowhere to fit a charger, and I don't agree with the cost of human misery involved in mining the heavy metals for the batteries. I'd buy a hydrogen car, no problem.
