What does the name "Tiggy" mean?
Posted by Starkgaryen12@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 224 comments
Tiggy must be a fairly common name (or maybe pet name) in the UK, right? After all there is an actress called Sienna Tiggy Guillory, and the nanny of the princes William and Harry was called Tiggy (even if her real name was Alexandra).
I would like to know where does it come from, if it's a stand-alone name, a pet name, both or neither.
Thanks in advance. Cheers
BroodLord1962@reddit
It's really not that common
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
That doesn't answer my question.
BroodLord1962@reddit
But it's telling you that it is not a common name
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
That was not my question.
draaj@reddit
I've only known one Tiggy and it was short for Antigone
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
Anecdotal, and rather unhelpful. As I said, there are people nicknamed Tiggy that are not called Antigona, and even people that have Tiggy as a legal middle name. Thanks for answering anyway.
draaj@reddit
Considering the first part of your question was about the name Tiggy being common in the UK, the answer is no
Kian-Tremayne@reddit
Not only is that one of the most painfully upper middle class names I’ve ever seen, it also screams that the parents don’t actually know that much about the classics. Antigone is right up there with Jocasta and Cassandra as names I would not hang on a daughter given what happened to the originals.
neilm1000@reddit
Good grief, no. I know a Jocasta who is half Greek which was something of a surprise!

Kian-Tremayne@reddit
Well done. We live in a world that needs more Tom Lehrer.
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
May I remind you there are millions of people called Jesus? Anyway, that's unrelated to my question.
draaj@reddit
I met Antigone in one of the most deprived state schools in the country, she definitely wasn't upper middle class!
AttackoftheHats@reddit
Do you feel the same way about every James, Peter, Simon, Phillip, Matthew, Andrew or Thomas named after apostles who died in various gruesome ways?
Not sure it really says anything about the parents' knowledge of the classics or lack thereof.
Suspicious_Diet4570@reddit
Helen is a pretty ill fated name too tbf, but is pretty common
centopar@reddit
I was at school with a Jocasta. It was that sort of school.
Expensive_Time_7367@reddit
I agree it’s painfully upper middle class but naming conventions don’t have strict association. It’s not like the loads of South American women called Soledad are lonely or even necessarily religious?
I don’t think French parents who include Marie somewhere in their boy’s name don’t know that Mary is a girl’s name!
I would speculate anybody choosing a name as exotic as Jocasta knows the association and just doesn’t care because they like the name.
Normal-Height-8577@reddit
Yeah, every so often I dip into Greek mythology, think "Oh that would be a pretty name for a baby" and then remember what happened to them and realise that no, it really wouldn't. And I think that applies to like...90% of nice Greek names?
DameKumquat@reddit
So I thought with Shakespeare too, but Ophelia is quite common now.
Even worse when they shorten it to Feelie...
geesegoosegeesegoose@reddit
The Antigone I know isn't posh, just of Greek descent.
paisleydarling@reddit
Oh god it’s my nieces middle name
No-Department-4561@reddit
Was the father’s brother named Creon by any chance 😉
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
That was my initial thought too.
But then I saw that (as I have attested in the body of the question) there were people that had Tiggy as a middle name, and people that were called Tiggy even if their name wasn't Antigone.
So my question stands.
ImaginaryParrot@reddit
Did they ever leave?

My Gran had a friend everyone called Tiggy, or it may have been Twiggy, she was a former Bluebell Girl.
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
Any idea what was her name or why everybody called her that? Thanks.
Entire-Emotion-819@reddit
I wish I could remember, unfortunately I'm the last of my family, and I was young at the time, 7 or 8 or something, she was a ballet dancer in her heyday as well as a showgirl before retiring in Blackpool, she was active in the 1950s-60s, I met her in the late 70s.
burtsarmpson@reddit
OPs mind being blown that nobody else knows a tiggy
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
Actually the opposite. Re-read the answers. Turns out lots of people know a Tiggy. The problem is that nobody agrees, or seems to know, where it originally comes from. Like you, for example. You don't know either. Thanks for answering anyway.

ikkleginge55@reddit
Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle is the Hedgehog in Beatrix potter. We have one in the garden called tiggy
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
Sure. The question was why, though.
ikkleginge55@reddit
Why did Beatrix Potter call one of her main characters Mrs Tiggy-Winkle??? Why does any author call their characters anything. Maybe she did it because it fitted the character and I expect because it sounded cute...
The Beatrix Potter books played a massive role in children's lives. Therefore that name has stuck as associated with animals in society, particularly Hedgehogs.
VolcanicBear@reddit
Must it?
I have never encountered a human or animal called Tiggy.
The only Tiggy I know is a particularly juvenile name for Tag.
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
Thanks for sharing. Doesn't answer my question though.

Although I think I prefer Tigatha.
0ttoChriek@reddit
I think Tigatha is Tigger's wife, no?

Neddlings55@reddit
I used to have a pony called Tiggy.
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
Good for you! Care to share the origin of the name?
Neddlings55@reddit
Most likely from Beatrix Potter.
Tiggy is either a pet name, or a human nickname. silly nicknames are popular with rich people. I know a Frisky and a Popperty growing up. Neither of those were their real names.
It certainly isnt common. Not even with pets these days.
KerryKinkajou@reddit
Only "tiggy" I've heard is when people at work CBA to say the full word for Tigecycline haha
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
?
KerryKinkajou@reddit
It's just a nickname for the antibiotic, people say cipro for ciprofloxacin, co-trim for cotrimoxazole, ceftrax for ceftriaxone etc. All I meant was that's the only context I've ever heard someone say "tiggy", definitely never as a name.
Specialist_Emu7274@reddit
I’ve never met or heard of any human called Tiggy, no idea where you got the ‘must be a fairly common name’ from. My neighbours ginger cat was called Tiggy though.
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
You can say "I don't know" if you don't know, or even not answer. That's a possibility.

Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
Ok

The only Tiggy I know of is Tiggy Legge-Bourke who was nanny to Princes William and Harry.
Haven’t met her, though have been to her family’s very large estate in Wales.
Not a common name (in either sense).
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
That's anecdotal and frankly unhelpful.
Old_Introduction_395@reddit
Alexandra Shân "Tiggy"
HarissaPorkMeatballs@reddit
I wouldn't judge what's a common name based on a nanny for the royals and a woman who's daughter of a musician and model and went to a public school (i.e. a very posh private school).
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
Cool! Doesn't answer my question though.
J_Cross_@reddit
My dog is called Ted and he snorts like a piggy so I call him Tiggy, tigs for short.
Maybe it comes from Beatrix Potters "Mrs Tiggywinkle"?
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
Maybe not, because that character was named after Potter's own hedgehog pet. Its name was Tiggy. What does the name Tiggy mean? What does it come from? That was my question.
pinpoint321@reddit
Nicknames have no rhyme nor reason in how they come about.
I had a friend who we used to call Sonic, his surname was Ruddock. I will let you attempt to extrapolate from there.
Starkgaryen12@reddit (OP)
Unrelated to my question, but thanks for sharing.
