What’s a ridiculous luxury that you’d struggle to live without?

I have an amazing rain shower wet room, honestly whenever I go to a hotel or anywhere it reminds how much I miss it. What 1st world luxuries have you become accustomed to?
cake-bake-fake@reddit
A heated car seat. I could never go back now!
DaddyRAS@reddit
A cooling car seat is almost as good. Hot day, cool bum. Feeling jaded, cool bum wakes you up
TheViscountRang@reddit
A standing clothes steamer. Whack your shirt in there, turn it on, don't even need to touch it and 5 minutes it looks perfectly pressed. Haven't touched an iron in 3 years
Effective-Bar-6761@reddit
I don’t iron clothes every day and it probably shows. I am now convinced I need to spend £340 on a steamer box.
You should absolutely contact Tefal and see if you can hand out discount codes. If you can convince me that this works on white cotton duvets I will absolutely buy.
TheViscountRang@reddit
You know what, I've never tried a cotton duvet, I tend to go for clothes. But I've got one in the drier as we speak, I'll give it a go tomorrow and feed back
FlagVenueIslander@reddit
I want to know this too!
Effective-Bar-6761@reddit
We’ll be waiting!
Dix-Septive@reddit
You iron duvets?
Effective-Bar-6761@reddit
We’ll, duvet covers more precisely, but yes, Bedlinen and tea towels are my ironing staples. That and those cotton facecloths. Clothes tend to sit in the ironing basket until I really need them.
A freshly made bed with ironed bedlinen is one of the simple joys in life in my opinion, and the pain of the ironing can usually be offset in some part by doing it in front of a Sunday afternoon episode of Colombo..:
danddersson@reddit
If you want them dry at the end, that's £699... Hang, clip on weights, wait 10minutes+, take off weights, un-hang, find somewhere to dry the clothes, hang up again, wait to dry...
I think I prefer ironing...
spritzreddit@reddit
I haven't touched an iron in more than three years and that's not because I have a standing clothes steamer
Past-Bicycle5959@reddit
Oh my god, £400 😩
NinjaTeaDrinker@reddit
Take clothes into the shower with you, hang them up and steam them pressed
Significant-Math6799@reddit
Doesn't work for me, sadly! I have a high humidity in my flat, if I leave the windows open and extractor fan it doesn't help that much, it still takes a full week to dry even basic fairly light clothing, 2 weeks to dry a pair of slim fitting jeans (ie not much fabric!)
There have been times I've gone to iron things and it's obviously stale as the water had taken that long to dry! We have outdoor space but due to the rules of the estate are banned from leaving anything outside the front, especially clothes drying on a drying rack! My bathroom is the most humid of all the rooms, it has between 90-95% humidity depending on when it's checked by the people I rent my flat from.
It's the same for everyone in the block and they're now "looking into" trying to deal with this as it's an endemic problem (and yes there is a mould problem throughout the block!), which would be a relief if they could resolve this- in the winter it can be up to 10 degrees colder inside my flat than it is outside and I can no longer afford to have my heating on! I'd be lost without a tumble dryer!
MantisToboggan25@reddit
This sounds awful. How is your flat not entrenched in mould in every crevice?!
NinjaTeaDrinker@reddit
Tumble dryer is the way, I don't own an iron but anything high cotton that needs to look nice gets the shower/steam treatment
mctrials23@reddit
My clothes are now wetter than when I started and there’s puddles on the floor.
TheViscountRang@reddit
I misunderstood the instructions and now I'm sat in the bath in a suit
Opinion87@reddit
Take your socks off- that'll sort it right out.
TheViscountRang@reddit
Do I put them in the toaster I brought?
NinjaTeaDrinker@reddit
You lot! 🤦♀️🤷♀️
DondeT@reddit
Barney?
lost_send_berries@reddit
You were meant to take them off before you got in the shower
scarby2@reddit
I suggest you don't look up the price of the LG Smart styler (I'm 90% certain one of them will get delivered at some point, my next heart attack after the Dyson hairdryer).
TheViscountRang@reddit
Yeah I put it off for about 4 months but as a Money Spent Vs Time Saved equation it's been a no-brainer. The fact that you can do a few things at once effectively makes it quicker than ironing too
Overlook_Johnny@reddit
Does it steam one item at a time or can you put a few things in it?
jhefin83@reddit
Never heard of one before, having read the reviews I want one!
Thanks-Recent@reddit
I've been trying to justify buying a less fancy clothes steamer and had no idea automatic ones even existed!! Does it work well? I'm so conflicted now... They're expensive but I'm lazy enough to need it!
TheViscountRang@reddit
It works great! I will say there's a learning curve trying to work out how long certain clothes need, but if I had to choose between keeping it or getting rid of it and getting the £400 I spent on it back (obviously they're cheaper now!), I'd choose the steamer every time.
specialagentredsquir@reddit
Wow!
Can you use it in suits? Would wave a fortune on dry cleaning if it does!
MillyMcMophead@reddit
Link to the Tefal one!
MrSimondo@reddit
Wow. I did not know these existed, just bought one.
Currently on offer via the Tefel website at £399 plus 15% off for new customers signing up to their mailing list, which brings it down to £339.15. A saving of £159.85 compared to it being full price / purchased from John Lewis.
Can’t wait for it to arrive. Thank you for the recommendation. I’m sure the wife will be very grateful too.
60s_Child@reddit
It wouldn't be cost effective for me. Since I retired the only time I wear anything that needs ironing is a formal shirt for weddings and funerals, (getting to the age when it's more of the latter, unfortunately). 9 times out of 10 I'm driving my sister there so I can wheedle her into ironing it.
Banana-Chai@reddit
Googled and been reading about it for the last 20 minutes. God, I hate ironing.
EveryChemistry9163@reddit
Tight clothes iron themselves. Put on some weight.
TheViscountRang@reddit
It is the worst of all the chores. objectively. You know that rage-inducing moment when you iron something slightly wrong and leave a gigantic crease on the other side that takes twice as long to remove?
Imagine never having that, ever again
wine_n_mrbean@reddit
I let a roommate use my iron once right before I was about to use it. Didn’t realize they fiddled with the heat and turned it all the way up (like they were ironing satan’s curtains). It melted a hole into the skirt I was about to wear to work.
TheViscountRang@reddit
Ironing Satan's curtains sounds like a phenomenal euphemism
MillyMcMophead@reddit
Oh god, yes! I need a steamer box thingy in my life.
DanStFella@reddit
My word how have I never heard about these contraptions?! I’d save myself hours per week. Easily worth the money. You’re a legend for mentioning this you’ve just changed my life!

Bean to cup coffee machine.
DaddyRAS@reddit
As our coffee machines have died over the years we've upgraded. The current one cost more than my first (shit) car.
Maharani_ice@reddit
Can you recommend any?
theevildjinn@reddit
I was bought a Gaggia Brera for my birthday, 7 years ago. It's made literally thousands of cups of coffee since, and I've had no issues at all. I just run a cleaning cycle every few weeks, and rinse the internal parts under the tap.
law_fallout@reddit
Not OP but I have the Sage Barrista Express. Had it 1.5 years, love it. I swear I have more people coming over just for the coffee. Got it in black friday deals as didnt want to pay full price.
Ashie2112@reddit
Oh yes ☕️

Definitely yes! And an Aeropress Go for travelling.

Super size king bed. When my OH and I go away we sleep terribly and genuinely don’t understand how other couples do it. I’m sure there would be less divorces if everyone just had a bigger bed.
julialoveslush@reddit
Me and my bf sleep separately and it’s the best thing.
Gary_BBGames@reddit
This is the key to a long and happy marriage. 18 years so far for me and the wife. Separate rooms totally. I’ll sneak in for a cuddle in the morning if she’s awake, but we’re totally different people for how we sleep. I need white noise, she needs silence. I need total darkness, she needs light.
MantisToboggan25@reddit
Key to your long and happy marriage. This would be terrible for loads of people.
julialoveslush@reddit
I think it is totally fine for a relationship as long as there’s cuddling and other intimacy other times.
Gary_BBGames@reddit
For sure. Sounds a bit mechanical, but scheduled intact really helps too. Friday day time is business time. Kids are at school, it’s day time so we’re not tired. Not ally go out for a lunch together, bang, and then play a couple of games of Fortnite. Best day of the week.
EffDubya@reddit
I can’t be the only one who heard this comment in my mind in the voice of Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords
the_wally_champ@reddit
Don’t forget to take the recycling out, it’s not part of it but it’s still very important
julialoveslush@reddit
I agree. We aren’t married and have only been together 5 years (we don’t live together), and I’m autistic so I find knowing when intimacy is gonna happen comforting.
Gary_BBGames@reddit
Yep, totally gets rid of the “is that what they’re after” and you can be prepared.
EsmescatYou@reddit
Totally. New relationship, he's lovely but he snores, all night. I'm trying to word the 'separate rooms, but together when not trying to sleep' conversation! Also agree with the scheduled shenanigans part. We both have full lives to juggle, so knowing that you're going to have some fun on Friday night is a very slow-burn sort of foreplay!
Bastrato@reddit
Similar here. 10 years married, not shared a room since before we were married. We go to bed together every night but I slope off after an hour or vice versa.
87catmama@reddit
This is honestly the way to do it! And if we do sleep in the same bed (at home) we have separate duvets.
QuaintStaircase@reddit
I don't even also in the same room as mine and it's bliss
BlooRox@reddit
This was the second thing we didn't hold back after buying our house last year!
DuckieWuckieNL@reddit
Totally Agree..we have a US sized king (200 x 200) bed (from living over there) and truly struggle in anything smaller than a UK Super king (180cm) whenever we book hotel rooms we have to get the bed size direct from the hotel as every country in Europe seems to have different sizes and definitions of “King”, with the UK being the worst offenders for tiny beds!
Our mattress has a good few years left in it and I’m relieved to see 200’s are slowly starting to appear here.
Pretty sure massive beds would solve all the UKs problems as everyone would be less angry after better sleeps!
ohnobobbins@reddit
We moved abroad temporarily to a country where 200x200 is standard. Bliss.
When we came back to the uk we were so tired and grumpy with each other after nights in a standard double. A superking was the first thing on our list to get, followed swiftly by blackout curtains.
I now dread staying with family, standard doubles are too bloody small! I have no idea how all of our grandparents put up with it.
AnxiousTerminator@reddit
We have a huge bed and end up sleeping on about 1/3 of it because my husband wants to snuggle but I get too hot and move away, so he shuffles closer in his sleep until around 2am I shove him back to the start position on his side. We need sheets like a conveyor belt really.
Eneia2008@reddit
How about a long feather pillow between the two of you?
Subaruchick99@reddit
We have one too and love it. Makes staying in hotels difficult 🤣 their beds are always smaller!
GretalRabbit@reddit
I have nowhere to put my arms in a double now! Last year my partner and I were on holiday (the first night in a standard double bed in ages) and he rolled me out of bed turning over. The next night he slept terribly because he didn’t want to accidentally knock me out of bed in his sleep again. We were very happy to get home to our own bed.
Ashie2112@reddit
We’ve had a super king size bed for our almost 30 years together and it’s just the best. Until the Labrador gets on it with us and then the bed feels way too small … 🙄
Artistic-Fish1125@reddit
We have a king and it's perfect size for us. I don't think our bedroom could even fit a suoer king. I remember when I was 14 my mom said I was getting a double bed because I was becoming a young adult and didn't need a twin anymore. Then after I got a bigger bed she always found it weird that I only slept on one side and never the other. I can't stand space and big beds. I'd go crazy if I couldn't touch my husband in the night.
50_61S-----165_97E@reddit
We do super king with a double duvet each, it's amazing
Yellow_cupcake_@reddit
1000000% yes. At a previous apartment my fiancé and I rented, our bed was 230x200cm, so wider than it was long. I could starfish and not even touch him, it was the best and we miss that bed every day.
oriwillow@reddit
If people don’t/can’t have a giant bed, two duvets is a winner.
sunkistandsudafed3@reddit
With you 100%. We dont want to sleep in a different room or bed, but we need some space to sleep comfortably. Got a really decent mattress too and it is worth every penny.
icklepeach@reddit
We have a king size bed, but a super king duvet. That was a game changer
kb-g@reddit
Agree. We have separate blanket/duvet too as we like different temperatures and used to fight over them.
CrossCityLine@reddit
Same. Super KS bed and separate sheets is a game changer.
Doomergeneration@reddit (OP)
I actually do understand why some couples sleep in separate beds
chillinoodle@reddit
A house at a constant 20 degrees.
I'm not sure it counts as a ridiculous luxury, but since we heat our house this way after having a heat pump, I get irrationally frustrated about being in anyone else's house when I need to wear extra layers at any point in the day.
DerwentPencilMuseum@reddit
I'd keep mine at 24 if I could (that's normal where I'm from). It's usually set to 20 and I still have to wear layers every day.
BrutalOnTheKnees@reddit
God I'd throw up if mine got to 24. I keep it at 18.5 as an absolute maximum.
I_Have_Hairy_Teeth@reddit
Jeez, I'd be happy if I could get my house to 18.5C in winter with the heating on most of the day. Old houses are awful at heat retention.
ChangingMonkfish@reddit
20 degrees is low for us, more like 22.
muffinator@reddit
Me too but 21.5
Da5ren@reddit
21.5 gang here. 22 is too hot. 21 too cold.
Da5ren@reddit
Same but 21.5. And yes, that .5 does make a difference
ldn-ldn@reddit
22.5 over here.
octoberforeverr@reddit
Is your place…the sun?
LionsAreMetal@reddit
I get this reference.
ldn-ldn@reddit
No, I prefer to feel warm at home and walk around in a t shirt and shorts all year round.
Lufc87@reddit
I could be in my pants and still profusely sweating at 22.5!
youllbetheprince@reddit
What are your energy bills like?
ldn-ldn@reddit
£70-100 per month during winter.
Maleficent-Share-851@reddit
same. anything lower and my whole body hurts. i have a very low threshold to extreme temperatures. hate going to the office in the summer when someone thinks it's normal to put the AC on 18°C. i need to bring an extra layer when i go to work in summer. or heard people keeping their heating on 180C the whole winter. i really need to understand why this 18°C is the norm because it's never comfortable to me. (except when it's the first sunny day of spring and you feel the sun on your face and it feels like 18°C but in the shade is really 12°C)
LiterallyABigfoot@reddit
I keep mine at 17. And by that I mean its usually around 17 and I never use heating for it
Ohtherewearethen@reddit
Oh my god, I'd be so uncomfortable with this. My thermostat is set to 16 even in the winter. I have my bedroom window open every night aswell, unless it's relentlessly hot and then it's best to keep it shut. I cannot abide feeling too warm.
maersyl@reddit
I was starting to think I’m completely alone in my love for a cool and comfortable house!
My thermostat is set to 16 and I also have windows open at night. Being too warm is so uncomfortable, if my house was over 18 constantly I’d be sweating.
chillinoodle@reddit
Oof, at 16 I would be putting jumpers on! With you at night though, we do have it to come down to 18 at night for comfortable sleeping.
FlexyPasta@reddit
Yes! I have floor heating and I do that too. Between 19 and 20. Forgot about when I used to have a blankie on the couch and fuzzy socks. No more!
RoohsMama@reddit
Oof… I have heat intolerant family members… they turn on the fan when they feel warm so I think what’s the point keeping it at 20…
Exita@reddit
Having a cleaner.
I haven’t cleaned a toilet or hoovered up in several years now.
TheViscountRang@reddit
Out of curiosity, how much do you pay and how often? I'm seriously weighing this up
IJBLondon@reddit
Mine is £18 an hour for 3 hours every 2 weeks (for a 2 bed flat). Worth every penny!
White_Swiss@reddit
So you go for 2 weeks without cleaning a toilet? Nasty.
Da5ren@reddit
I have one come weekly for 2 hours. £30 a week. Money well spent for me because I get that 2 hours back not having to clean.
ForestCl0uds@reddit
And me! I like the thought of not having to spend a significant chunk of my weekends cleaning.
TheViscountRang@reddit
I just looked up a calculator and it reckons about £100 to clean a 3 bed house ;-;
dozerdoll@reddit
Lol my cleaner is £12/h, she does 2h a week for a 3bed house
lost_send_berries@reddit
You'd better give her a big Christmas card with a buncha money in. I haven't paid those rates in decades
lesloid@reddit
That’s below minimum wage :(
Subject-Candidate678@reddit
Its not if its cash in hand. Its actually more than most people get after tax
dozerdoll@reddit
It's her rates! Shes retired, she uses my cleaning stuff and wants to be in and out
TheViscountRang@reddit
That's the jackpot surely
dozerdoll@reddit
They clean as much or as little as you want. As shes every week, bathroom, kitchen and hallway landing (carpet) are always done then does a surface clean of everything else. I posted on our local FB page and found her!
Spiderinahumansuit@reddit
Same!
Honestly, cleaning was causing so many arguments because my other half would complain that she had to do the cleaning if I was watching the kids, or that she'd been dumped with the kids if I did the cleaning. Massive quality of life improvement.

Having separate bathrooms is an underrated marriage saver.
the-TARDIS-ran-away@reddit
Pretending you dont poop for the first year of a relationship then shouting at them to bring you a bucket a few years down the line because you cant get off the toilet and they walk in to see you shitting (in the toilet) and throwing up in the sink at the same time is....something.
ohnobobbins@reddit
Ahhh marriage
No_External_417@reddit
Omg yes! I don't know what we'd do if we move into a place with one bathroom!
dallaschickensh1t@reddit
I live alone and have 3 toilets… blows my mind 😂
Spottyjamie@reddit
Do you have a favourite?!
Espresso-Newbie@reddit
Same. In some countries this is unbelievable to have so many toilets /bathrooms.
dallaschickensh1t@reddit
Apart from america - I always see these huge houses with more bathrooms than bedrooms and it blows my mind!
Espresso-Newbie@reddit
Very true. Each bedroom having their own bathroom!!
Espresso-Newbie@reddit
Then you have the Netherlands where the norm is a family bathroom upstairs and a toilet downstairs.
LynxEqual9518@reddit
Norway too. Almost every house or larger apartment has two or more toilets. Usually one smaller guest toilet with just a sink and toilet, meant for guests or quick visits with no other agenda, and then a larger bathroom with all the trimmings, including an extra toilet.
Lufc87@reddit
I lived in two houses as a kid, both with downstairs toilets. My parents (and me) moved house when I was 19 to one which only had the main bathroom. Christ was that was a sharp adjustment period!
-cunningstunt@reddit

Boiling water tap too. Kettles are easy, I get it. But I can’t go back. It’s hard to explain logically.
A bit like keyless entry to my car. No, I can’t defend that either, but if a car doesn’t have keyless entry, I’m not buying it.
New-Replacement-7638@reddit
I really hate keyless entry and always use the blipper instead because otherwise I obsess that it’s not locked.

I spent £600 on my robot vacuum / mop and I'd do it again. It has 2 spinny mop pads and huge clean and dirty water tanks and the robot will return to base to clean the mops as it goes. Bought a cheapo mop / vacuum for upstairs and it's just not the same
damxmpp@reddit
What brand did you go for?
Prudent_Poetry8601@reddit
Eufy X9 pro. There's probably others with better suction power and it won't always lift stuck on food stains in the kitchen but as an all rounder I love it. Its making sure you use it regularly that gets you the best benefits
Prudent_Poetry8601@reddit
My upstairs one is the Eufy L60 hybrid. Vacuums grand, but may as well not have a mop at all

A dehumidifier
Doomergeneration@reddit (OP)
I’ve been meaning to invest in one, any recommendations
bb79@reddit
We tried the Meaco Arête and Meaco ABC and either had to send them back, or they broke after a few months. We like to keep our house at 18ºC or so during winter and refrigerant compressor dehumidifiers (the bulk of the ones on the market) don’t work efficiently below 20ºC.
Ended up settling on Meaco DD8L which is a desiccant dehumidifier. Works well all the way down to 1ºC, although uses twice the energy compared to the others. They do break after a couple of years; we’ve had about 5 of them now.
QuaintStaircase@reddit

Absolutely top tier this!
kb-g@reddit
My mobile phone. Objectively a luxury. Feels like I’m missing a limb without it.
HugsandHate@reddit
I'd argue the fact we live in a time where you have to rely on one just to exist doesn't make it a luxury. It makes it a necessity.
Considering essential services require you to have one, makes living in the modern age pretty much impossible without one.
super-freak@reddit
Loads of people intentionally live without one. Yeah, it makes a lot of things more difficult. But it shows that it isn't a "necessity".
HugsandHate@reddit
Good luck setting up a bank account without one. So many services require a phone number for authentication.
Hell, I even lost my Facebook about I'd had since I was like 13, because it got hacked. First question of the authentication process was 'What is your phone number'. I never gave them one. When I was a kid we didn't even have mobile phones.
Bummer really. I lost contact with everyone I've ever known throughout my life. Now I've only got a handful of more modern contacts I just so happened to add to Whatsapp. And... I mean a handful. I have no way of contacting the hundreds of people I've lost.
And things like government services, they're always sending you codes and things. I couldn't do my taxes without a phone...
BabyAlibi@reddit
I have one that is a luxury too. My normal phone is great, great for photos, never had an inch of problem with it. When my contract ran out this year I said bugger it and signed up for the cutest little pink Samsung flip phone. Just because I miss flip phones! It current doesn't even have a sim in it because, well my other phone is great but it's just so pretty 🤣

I have a kettle which does 70, 80, 90 and 100 degrees. Takes out the guesswork when boiling a kettle for green tea (around 80° or it goes really bitter). Perfect green tea every morning!
doctorace@reddit
And coffee should also be brewed at 80. So many people think they don’t like green tea because they brew it wrong.
Weezlecheesle@reddit
Agreed. Most green tea outside my home taste terrible unless you go to a proper tea place which knows not to over-boil it.
Prof_Hentai@reddit
80 is on the lower-end of what is acceptable for very dark roasts. Aim for 85-90 for a normal dark roast, and absolutely boiling for lighter roasts.
katvoira@reddit
WeeKett? Love ours and occasionally set it on the app for 1° increments when we have a really nice tea!
Weezlecheesle@reddit
Nope, it’s a Bosch one
Fresh_Instance_1991@reddit

We have a cat litter robot 4, which is an automatic cat litter scooper. It serves our 3 big cats and because of it, we NEVER come home to cat poo smells. It has to be emptied once or twice a week but it takes seconds, and maybe once a month I give it a really thorough clean. It is amazing. Keeps the cats happy and makes the house not stink! Oh, and skincare! My skin is really dry, despite the humidity issue, I don't understand this either!

I always have one installed in the house. The toilet seat type bidet was a big help with my kid learning to toilet train. Wasn’t messy, they just press a button to wash their bum and remove messy bits, and then wipe with toilet paper. Very clean.

So, i was homeless for a long time when I was a young woman. It was very dangerous and I was always cold, wet, fearing for my life every night. This was the tail end of the 00s and into the 2010s (double dip recession remeber that) I was in extreme poverty right up until 2016, (I didn't even have a cooker and cooked on a camping stove) then remained in benefit land on disability through to the 2020s. I now have secure disability benefits and a self employed gig I love to do when my health allows me from home creating art. For all the time I am in my home, having that luxury, of a snoody and enough money in my heating account to stay at a comfortable temperature that doesn't effect my illnesses and allows me a small semblance of health will always be a luxury to me.
A dehumidifier is great, but mobility and health, even if it's minor good health days is some of the most luxurious I have felt in the last 20+ years.
Glad-Pomegranate6283@reddit
I’ve been homeless myself a couple of times due to DA. Not on the street for v long and ppl probs think it’s v strange . An absolutely gorgeous quilt, cost me a fortune but binning my duvet and replacing it with a beautiful 100% Cotton quilt has upped my quality of life massively lol
RoohsMama@reddit
I’m looking into this because much as I love duvets, I can never get them squarely inside the cover. Ends up being a mess at the bottom.
BronwynnSayre@reddit
Trick is: Lay the cover on the bed with the top corners straight and the bottom open.
Pick duvet up by top corners
Put duvet corners fully into cover corners.
Hold tightly by those corners, not letting duvet slip, stand on bed and shake until cover drops over rest of duvet.
Grab by bottom corners and shake again.
Button it up
Aggressive_Chuck@reddit
But then it all moves

Do you have any recommendations? I had Emma and I really did not like it, it sunk after a year or so
Pippin4242@reddit
Just taken a look at my records, and it appears to be a Mayfair Beds Baroness 1500. It's not the purest recommendation as it has sunk a bit, and we've had to be very diligent with a plank up the middle, extra legs under the bed, and flipping and turning quarterly. On its own I found the tufts very uncomfortable, so we added a firm topper too. A firm mattress plus learning to use a body pillow correctly has honestly done wonders for my back over the years.
ConsciousFox5@reddit
Thanks! Sounds a bit tricky but will look into it. If anyone else has a recommendation pls let me know 👀
Pippin4242@reddit
I was anxious that it could be comfortable year round - the ones with memory foam didn't seem right at all, and the mattress topper has made all the difference.
GlamGemini@reddit
I have an ikea hybrid mattress and hate the memory foam. Would some of mattress topper be any help?
Pippin4242@reddit
I imagine it would be slightly less effective in making it firm than if you had a firm mattress to start with, but I definitely think it would help. Ours is lovely and flat, and wasn't wildly expensive compared to replacing the mattress itself. I think it's a latex one from John Lewis?
GlamGemini@reddit
Thanks! Hopefully there's some sort of cooling matress topper or something.
Head-Ring8851@reddit
I have back problems and big tits, whats a body pillow and how do you use it?
Pippin4242@reddit
Probably best not to take my word for it, I'm sure there are good guides to which you might benefit from - but I use a cheap l-shaped pillow from Dunelm, and keep it between my knees whenever possible in bed. It seems to even out the whole situation a bit, and depending on my position it's sometimes right up between my boobs too. Kind of doesn't seem like it could be doing much... except my back is nothing like as bad now.

You normally don't buy a brand, you buy from a farm. I can recommend a shop though - https://www.teavivre.com
When you click though their selection, you will notice that they publish info like harvest time, harvest year, farm (tea garden), etc.
Please note that none of Chinese teas taste like your regular British tea in a tea bag. And you need to learn how to brew them.

Bedstretch. I am 6ft 5 and have always struggled with beds' length ways. UK super king is only 200cm in length. Starting to suffer with ankle pain in my mid 30s then someone pointed me towards a bedstretch. Expensive - £100-£150 but boy was it worth it. Just attach it to the headboard and its added an extra 6 inches in length. Literally changed my life and the first night with it was the best sleep I've ever had. Doubles as a mini shelf in bed too for drinks etc.
Buy one if you're like me and always too tall for smaller UK beds.

A dishwasher, never had one until I owned my own home and genuinely think I would spiral back into depression without it.
An upstairs hoover (VACUUM I KNOW) such a game changer for bedroom spiders, doing the top half of the stairs, cobwebs over the landing, general upstairs dustiness. The Henry downstairs gets used and 'bused I don't like to use it on carpets.
A walk in pantry, it's not huge but it means we didn't have to have any wall units in the kitchen and no food (except the fridge/freezer) is kept in the kitchen at all. I can lock the door to stop my kids eating 74 bags of crisps, stop family pets getting at stuff, hide small appliances away and seasonal tableware and decorations etc. LOVE IT⭐️

Motion sensors for my smart home lighting. Don't need to press any buttons, it's just on for the right amount of time and the correct brightness. I if I'm going to the kitchen it's bright, toilet during night, dimmed (also the hallway). It's really odd having to manually turn on lights when I stay in other places.

Automatic parking on my car. At first it’s a bit of a gimmic, but when you use it all the time you find it just does what it is meant to do. I use it daily especially since I live in a city. I’ve slept in a Superking bed that I share with my husband for over a decade.
A king size is cramped and uncomfortable for two of us. A standard double feels like a single bed. I will not fork out money for a hotel room unless I can get a superking or two big singles pushed together (the ones common in resorts abroad).

Toilet paper. Try an alternative and you’ll know why
Several_Hospital_129@reddit
Years ago I went on a church mission trip to Mexico. Before we left, our group was told that in Mexico, the sewage system could not take toilet paper. Expect to see a bucket beside every toilet. Sure enough, we spent six weeks there and everywhere we went, there was a bucket beside the toilet. Churches, private homes, business, big city, small village. It didn't matter. There was always a bucket beside the toilet.
Since then, I have never taken American plumbing for granted. It may not be a ridiculous luxury to most people, but my stars, you don't appreciated it until you don't have it.

(It’s a swan retro ground coffee machine with a milk wand. I used to have a £200 bean-to-cup machine and it was godawful, the coffee came out cold and the milk frother didn’t work. This new one was half the price and a hundred times better!)

£8 luxury foaming shower gels
7 years ago I broke my arm and when it was in a cast, I couldn't get it wet or lather soap. So I bought a can of foaming shower gel and now I can't go back

My bedding. I always wanted some really good quality bedding and it finally happened. Feels like I’ve made it and other bedding is nice but it just doesn’t feel as good as my own little Dorma collection.
Also my cat and everything I can do for him now. He’s been here with us through everything. I love that his life has gotten so much better. I couldn’t give up watching him live so well. He has always had the best I could give him but now it’s so much better for him than it was even five years ago. Better home, food and entertainment.

A prosumer espresso machine (La Pavoni Cellini) and semi-commercial grinder (Mazzer Philos). Totally a luxury but definitely can’t do without and is very much part of my day.
Emma mattress
Good loo roll. Totally unnecessary but can’t live without.
Not having to worry about being cold - heating to a good level is a non-negotiable and I know this way of thinking is absolutely a luxury and I don’t take it lightly.
ParsnipMammoth1249@reddit
A prosumer espresso machine, a coffee grinder, and a selection of specialty coffees (11 at the moment) for my morning espressos. Whenever I'm away for work or on holiday, I miss the coffee I make at home. It's hard to find a coffee shop that makes espresso the way I like it.

Smart home devices. Especially lightbulbs and plugs.
gemmajenkins2890@reddit
I have echos, bulbs and a doorbell, but haven’t stretched to plugs yet.
Any recos? Thank you!

My top recommendation would be TP Link Tapo when they're on sale, but a lot of that's probably because I've mostly bought into their products and it's easier to stick to one brand.
I've got a mix of TP link (Kasa (now discontinued, and the newer ones are better) and Tapo) and IKEA. The ikea ones aren't bad and have some bonuses (cheap and easy to add remotes) and are a bit cheaper but I like having the option for timers, energy monitoring etc with the TP links.

Looks like I have some research to do…
Thank you!
QuaintStaircase@reddit
If you're adding a few, you might want to look at coming off wifi
gemmajenkins2890@reddit
Sorry, can you explain?
QuaintStaircase@reddit
I assume the bulbs you have currently are WiFi ones?
As your smart home grows, WiFi-based smart devices become more and more of a pain.
If you're planning to keep growing, it's worth considering switching over to local control; matter or zigbee, sooner rather than later.
Saves you trashing all the WiFi ones when you have a lot and you can't take it anymore. Ask me how I know 😂
gemmajenkins2890@reddit
Ohhhh I get you.
I have thought in the past, the more I hook up to my hub, the more the bandwidth has to be shared out, and we do online gaming so need good fast internet for that. Well it’s not gonna be very quick if I’ve got umpteen other devices all trying to use it is it?! lol.
I will take a look. Thank you!
QuaintStaircase@reddit
Quite! You also start getting app fragmentation, introducing more and more security risks (every device being a new, cloud-connected, hackable entry to your home that never gets updated), and you're screwed if the internet goes down!
TurbulentHamster3418@reddit
I’ve got Nooie plugs from Amazon, super easy to use too!

Omg yes. I haven't physically turned a light on in a good 5 years 😂 Pure bliss

I have a Sage Oracle touch coffee machine. Cost me a grand but my wife and I never buy coffee out of the house so it’s paid for itself several times over.
But that’s not the luxury.
The luxury is a small shaker filled with dark cocoa powder for my morning cappuccino

A really good shower head. Once you've had proper pressure at home, hotel showers feel like someone gently misting you with a plant sprayer.

Having two bathrooms in a family home makes such a difference
stauer88@reddit
It's only a 2 bed as well so even more unexpected to have it. I dislike the area and would love to move but having a semi detached two bed house with garden at housing association rents is too good to lose.

Feels like it considering it's a council house.
It's not a luxury I'd ever be able to afford if I tried to rent privately.

We have 2 bathrooms and 3 toilets, one on each floor. Also love our double driveway and that we don’t have to park on the road.

Since my son moved out, my partner and I have our own bathrooms. It was luxurious enough not sharing a bathroom with a teenage boy, but my own? Not having to jostle for shower time? Being able to leave as many shampoos as I want on the side? Sheer luxury.
Ravdoggydog@reddit
Indoor 15m pool with swim-jet which I use most days, for fitness and just bobbing around with a rum & coke listening to audiobooks. It’s great for parties too - though I do worry as my kids get older and have parties about any “Michael Barrymore” incidents under my roof!

£300 dehumidifier my bf got for a damp basement (that has been fixed now) that we NOW use to dry clothes.
I can put 3 loads of clothes to dry in a spare room and they'll dry in only a few hours max. It's amazing

A campervan. I converted it myself from a 15 seat minibus so it suited our requirements*. My wife has disabilities that means she needs a toilet nearby, and I'm a lazy bastard which means I need a kettle and a comfy bed. It's perfect.
*It's actually for much more than that but for comedic brevity I've shortened it to its basic requirements.

Boiling water tap. We didn’t know the house had one when we moved in but I shall never again boil water in a kettle like a Peasant. Funnily enough before we moved in we lived with my in laws because our house sold before the new one was ready and they had one. Hated it. Just made bubbly tea. Ours doesn’t have that issue though. Strangely after 5 years I still get that flash of muscle memory about boiling a kettle. Ie you come in, need a wee. Do you boil the kettle first whilst peeing or do it all after.
