“Never meet your heroes”. Who other than Mr. Rogers is an exception to that phrase?

Yes! I think that was it. I'm a big Bowie fan and I saw it after he died (so I think it came east the following year?) and yeah, the Labyrinth stuff was SO cool. It's interesting--most musicians, they wouldn't make a good exhibit, but because Bowie was such a visual guy (costumes, wardrobe, artwork in shows) it lent itself perfect to a gallery. One of my favorite shows. OK--time for a Labyrinth rewatch! lol.

I live in Brooklyn and you see Steve Buscemi around town a bit, and I kid you not: he's actually really handsome in real life. I was walking around with my wife and kids and I saw this guy, and I was like, "Wow--handsome guy." I'm not really looking for guys lol but he had--"it," I guess. He was tall and slender and really well-dressed, and he looked really fashionable in well-fitted clothes. And then I was like--"Wait, is that Steve Buscemi?" lol. There was another time I was eating with my family in a restaurant and he came up and looked through the glass right behind us to see in, just his face kind of floating behind my wife's as we were eating. Pretty funny. But, yeah--he's known around here as being a very friendly, decent guy.

I went to the David Bowie exhibit Brooklyn when it came around, and one of my favorite exhibits were these letters between Bowie and Henson about the costumes they wanted to create for *Labyrinth.* Just the coolest thing--these two absolute geniuses brainstorming.

Is it common for low-income students to attend top universities in the United States?

You've got good folks, and yeah--no way in hell I'm going to let my kids rack up debt at a top-tier university when they can go to a state university and get an almost-as-good education. Education is vitally important, but it shouldn't hurt so bad. Fun fact: somebody a while back did a survey of Nobel prize winners in various sciences, and most of them were affiliated with state schools / other various non-top-tier schools. Go to school, but don't go broke!

I do not feel safer owning guns. I've lived in or around the NYC area my entire life, and very few people I know have / use them. In a rural area, sure--I get that, I guess, although if I were to move to the country I doubt I'd buy one. Here--guns / more guns here just means more violence.

Is it common for americans to have a baseball bat at home?

Posted by Hyde1505@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1067 comments

Message_10@reddit

Yeah, exactly, and I think that's why it's sort of a movie trope--when somebody breaks into somebody's house and the homeowner grabs a bat, you think "Oh, he's got a son in little league or he plays softball or something"--you don't have to work too hard at an explanation, because it's such a common pastime. For what it's worth, we don't have a bat in my house--we live in an apartment--but if somebody broke in, I could bonk them with a tennis racket

Yeah--I think certain target date funds chilled out a bit with the bond ratios, for the reasons you stated. I have a 2045 target fund at Vanguard and I started it years ago and I think they actually lowered the %age of bonds in it because it was way, waaaay too conservative. I'd have to check, though--I don't have much in there so I haven't checked in a while. Either way--congrats! :)

I tried everything but the only thing that worked was counting calories! and from what I read, all the other diets (Atkins, paleo, etc.)--when they work it's because you're sticking to your calories anyway. It took me a \*while\* to get the hang of it and find foods that I can eat and feel satisfied with, but I have it down now (and cheat whenever I get the chance, lol). r/CICO helped a lot--great place over there!

And, not for nothing, but I think we're going to see interest/membership in unions skyrocket in years to come. Conservatives are going to fight it tooth and nail and it's not going to be pretty, but in the end unions will win because the alternative is--well, poverty for the masses. So THANK YOU! Xennials who had dancing, drinking, and sex parties in Middle School…How are you doing now?

Posted by SecondSaintsSonInLaw@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 344 comments

Message_10@reddit

Same--that was my experience as well (not in the armed forces, but in college). Rural kids did all that from an early age; suburban kids mostly drank and did drugs; urban kids went to all the parties but kind of had a better sense not to get too "loose," like they knew they needed to take care of themselves and didn't trust doign so around strangers at a big party. The urban kids also had a sort, like, they'd seen it all and didn't need to get involved to have a good time.

It's an old quote (and I'm a big fan of Chicago and Philly) but there's a bit of truth to it, I think--those are the most unique cities we've got.

It always seemed like such a huge thing to get into them--it was just a band, it was a whole culture, and if you didn't know about some song they played at some arena in 1983 then you couldn't enjoy them properly, lol. It just seemed like too much. I still went to a show when I got the chance, though! I just figured it would be a good show and we ended up seeing Bob Dylan open about a month before Jerry Garcia died. Lots of fun--super-glad I went.

I'm absolutely loving this. Hop over to r/colognes for more, if you're enjoying this. I'm 48m and I just came to cologne over the last few years. Here's what I love: Summer: Acqua di Gio Profondo. Citrusy, salty, masculine--great for summer. Autumn: Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille or Parfum de Marly Herod: vanilla, smokey, my wife LOVES it. Winter: Bvlgari Man in Black. Woody, leather, rum--really sexy. Spring: Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male. Lavender and minty, really fresh. Have fun! There's so much great stuff out there--it's a great hobby, and if you don't overdo it, it's way more accepted than the "Drakkar Days" of the 90s, lol.
