Do you use the word 'gay' to mean 'poncey', 'effeminate' or 'vain'?

SE. I used to run a gay night. The people who used it were people I met through running the night, most of whom were gay. I never discussed this with them but some of them certainly used to use it that way and it was a favourite phrase of our door picker.

Gay used to mean happy. Then it meant homosexual. For a while it was also used to mean a bit naff or poncey. Then somebody decided that it was offensive to gay people (homosexual not happy) to use it to mean naff or poncey, so now those of us 'who know better' don't use it to mean that. I'm not sure who makes these rules about language being offensive up, I never met a gay person IRL who was offended by describing something a bit bit naff or poncey as 'gay'. Plenty of people I knew who were gay (homosexual) used to use it this way too.

What are you tips for driving abroad?

You'll be fine. You may be a little nervous at first but will quickly settle into it. Also the roads in France are so much better than here in the UK.

One of the guests (male) stripped naked and the mother of the bride was whipping him across the butt with his own belt in the middle of the dancefloor. Yes this really did happen.

Do you like night shifts?

LordCoops@reddit

I did permanent nights for 3 years. I was very similar to you (still am a bit) in as much as I always struggled to sleep at night and was happier sleeping through the morning. At first it was fine, But it did screw with my family and social life. I never adjusted at weekends, and I went a bit wonky. It played havoc with my mental health and I started partying too hard at the weekend, which nearly cost me my relationship. The only saving grace with that job was that I was on decent wages to compensate for it. £13.50 an hour may seem a lot to an 18 year old with no income, but it'd not that great in the grand scheme of things. You will miss out on seeing your friends during the week and relationships will be hard.

Do Teddy Boys still exist?

Clearly the original Teds were the ones in the 1950s, it doesn't matter how long you went on for, if you started in the 70s you were a revivalist not an original. The early Edwardians were really smart. Those who came later were almost a caricature of the originals. Some of the original Edwardians scorned the change. Instead of the exaggerated stye of the Teds they switched to wearing Italian suits in the late 50s, and were the forerunner of the Mods who would follow them in the early 60s. Today there are plenty of Teds from the 1970s who still go to rocking events and wear original vintage clothes. Although these are now all knocking on a bit they are still as passionate about their scene. You also have the people who discovered it later in life and cosplay being Teds. looking more like extras from Grease than proper Teds.

There are still a few Teddy Boys about. Mainly 70 year olds who never stopped dressing that way from the 1970s revival. But there are also a few younger ones about, but not that many.

I guess it is all relative. I am a southerner and so Sheffield is definitely the North IMO. But if you asked a man from Gateshead they may have a different opinion.

Bacon Brie & Sweet Red Onion, under burgers. What would you expect?

Posted by Usual_Letterhead_646@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 564 comments

LordCoops@reddit

So none of those 'burgers' listed come with a beef patty? If I ordered the 'glazed pulled pork' I would expect a burger with pulled pork on top, what I would get is a pork sandwich. If I ordered the 'bacon, brie and red onion' I would expect a burger with those toppings. What OP got was a cheese and bacon roll. OP did you complain at the time? What did they say? Can you name and shame the restaurant?

One of my friends is a chef. When it came to hosting we all wanted him to do it, as the food was always amazing. But chefs don't always earn as much as their skills deserve. So everyone chipping in for the ingredients was the norm. I miss those nights, my friend now lives abroad.
