I love it, but I do worry about you guys. You are SO nice⦠no survival skills whatsoever (that is somehow a compliment).Ā
Whenever I have friends from Canada visiting the UK, I do not allow them to be alone for one second. Last time I did allow them to roam free, one of them offered to help a lady with her luggage on the tube - she spat at him and tried to claw his eyes out. He did admit it was obvious she was on sone sort of drugs, but that did not stop him from trying to be nice.
You are adorable, I just hope you stay safe when you go out into the wild (i.e. outside of Canada).
lol, I cackled about the no survival skills. Believe me we have them, they are just kept with the āyouāll be sorryā side of the personality, not the āweāre sorryā side.
There is no doubt in my mind that you guys can tackle anything from a polar bear to a mass shooter. What I meant by āno survival instinctā (and that is why I mentioned itās a compliment) is the fact that you seem to always assume people are nice and act accordingly.Ā
I have nothing negative to say about Canadians. We were treated really well there. I'd rather holiday there than the U.S. I wouldn't go to the U.S now if you paid me.
Above those kinda of countries yes, but the UK alone we are nowhere near a middle power. There is a reason that Trump feels he can single the UK out... and that is it. We have no bargaining power and are in a weak position.
Nah, thereās no reason behind anything Trump does. Heās also singled out France, Denmark, Canada, etc. The guy doesnāt have 2 brain cells to rub together.
Nah, he has relentlessly slandered the UK directly and consistently since he came to power. He can get away with this because we are no longer of significant. We were a founding member of the EU with a strong veto vote as a senior leader in the union...now we are.... well just a little Island that has empire hangover with no empire.
Brexit an obvious case of self-immolation, and the ideals of Farage are repellant, self-defeating and wrong.
Having said that, Trumpās opinion is irrelevant and doesnāt define us. He can get away with expressing it because nobody has any appetite to bomb the US on the whim of their man-baby dictator. He has slandered plenty of people, almost all of them influential with governments that arenāt entirely right wing. While Iād undo Brexit in a heartbeat, we wouldnāt be in a different place in this respect if we were within the EU.
(Im not the person youāre responding to, but) The difference is that direct targeting of the British economy with tariffs are far more effective when it is not part of a single economic bloc with the power to hit back.
And yes, youāre right he has tried to target individual EU economies (also thinking he can tariff them as single member states, as recently as a few weeks ago ā¦again), but we are all here working from the understanding that he is really, really fucking stupid anyway, and that the fact in the real world (not his mind) that member states can not be targeted especially effectively and there is a serious counterweight that can push back.
Again, I know. But Trump doesnāt. He has tariffed the EU without compunction because heās dim and he has no understanding of international diplomacy. And obviously the EU has returned the favour, as have we.
Both the UK and EU would be better if we were still in it, but Ok-Trafficās point is a false premise.
I would have liked to live to Canada but hubby said it was too cold in the winter & the entry rules are hard. Iāve been there a few times love the place & most of the people I met.
I like Canada. Itās like a bit of a weird halfway house between England and the USA. Iāve only been to Vancouver but have also known various Canadians from across Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland.
Canada and Australia are the two big players in CANZUK and both their food standards are lower than ours, both using growth hormone beef, they wash their eggs, and they use a lot of banned preservatives and additives. Their pharma will want a slice of the NHS too. Even though Canadian/Aus pharma is cheaper than American, itās still insurance based, and they will want to price gouge us.
Canadian data protection is also much lower so that would probably be put on the chopping block too, itās an easy target that no one notices in their everyday life.
Finally if there is gonna be freedom of movement, I donāt know if you really want a bunch of Canadians (socially acceptable Americans) coming over and being all Canadian. Like they have the same head of state as us but they are culturally much more aligned with the US. Aus is a bit closer to us in culture but still very different.
We are much closer in values to our European allies. Itās not language that unites or divides us, itās shared political and cultural values and regulations.
You're worried that if Canadians can freely emigrate to OZ, NZ, or UK, a significant proportion of exiting Canadians will choose UK? None of these options are convenient, they'll be choices made carefully on merit, largely to get away from bullshit politics and enjoy an outdoor lifestyle in peace. UK is a galacticly distant 3rd on that list.
I donāt see how itās convenient for Canadian to emigrate to Australasia either. Due to the geographical nature of CANZUK, we donāt have much in common apart from language. We are separated with miles of ocean, itās not practical for trade or migration.
No offense, but it's pretty damned hot in summer. We do have longer winters for sure. But there are times( at least in Ontario) when we are reaching temperatures found in the Mediterranean. There is a very short spring and we are straight into summer, so its an unusual climate.
A lot of Brits head to Virginia for the fall colours. I personally think Canada surpasses anything in USA. It's a reward for us facing the onslaught of winter. End of July to Mid/ late August is something else; think mid France and the smell of pines. I am in Ontario and our typical life is swimming and boating in 20+C clear lakes throughout summer ; it's not quite to temperature yet, but gets there fairly quickly once we have the blue skies and sun. Once you experience a Canadian summer it's difficult to go elsewhere.
I feel excellent about Canada. Had a lovely holiday there in 2009. The Tragically Hip are glorious. You're decidedly less of a jerk compared to your southern neighbour. The way you say 'about' is funny to my British ear but I imagine much of what we say is funny to you!
Well you don't have a certifiable lunatic for a President so that makes you great in my book. I love Unlearn16 (Joanna Johnson) her lessons should be compulsory for everyone south of the border and indeed the world. š
Very positively. I've been to Toronto in the freezing cold winter, everyone I met was really friendly and helpful. Good food , Skyscrapers and trams, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, The Band, Alanis Morissette, and so many more. You've done good Canada!
Love it. Visited Toronto once, was a great holiday. Canadians are awesome too, fantastic people. Canada & the UK, now THAT is the real transatlantic āspecial relationshipā.
I love Canada. This is strongly coloured by the 2.5 years my family spent in Alberta in the late 70s when I was 11-13 years old. Dad was in the British Army and they have (had?) a joint forces base near Medicine Hat with the Canadian Armed Forces, mostly for doing tank training on the prairies, I think. Dad was an instrument technician (no, not musical, vehicle) so was there to keep things running along with the mechanics. It was an idyllic time for me. I was given a *lot* of freedom that they wouldn't give me in the UK either before we were there or after we left. We lived in a small self-contained village (school from K to 8? jr high, I think; supermarket, burger/shake bar, cinema, bowling alley, pool, gym with court layouts for most sports, outdoor ice rinks (2), library, tons of other activities) with mostly other army families, a good hour away from "the Hat" by bus (I was even permitted to go on that bus by myself/with friends to go shopping and spend my babysitting money - some weeks I could make over $20, and only charged 50c to $1 an hour depending on number of kids!), and patrols were done by MPs regularly so parents saw it as very safe. I recall it as the happiest time of my childhood.
We dad retired from the army a couple of years after then, were had the option to emigrate to Canada or Australia. I wanted Canada, so did Dad. But Mum had family in Australia, so that's where we ended up. I'll always wish we had gone to Canada instead. I moved back to the UK 29 years ago. I never made it back to Canada for a holiday and now, being very reluctant to take my expensive wheelchair on a plane, it's unlikely I ever will. I looked at cruises from the UK that hit Canadian ports, but all of them would require a flight home as they aren't round trip cruises :(
Not yet had chance to visit but have loved every Canadian I've met. So much nicer than their neighbours. More polite, more humble, more considerate, more aware of the existence of the rest of the world
I once thought of it as somewhere to which I might wish to emigrate or retire. Unfortunately, it appears to have been spoilt by the so-called Liberal political ideologies. See also Australia and New Zealand.
I've never met a Canadian I didn't like. I've never been but fully intend to one day. I think with very few exceptions we think of Canadians most fondly.
I really like Canadians and Canada. Bsnff is beautiful as is Whistler. I wish our PM would also put his elbows up more. You say āaboutā wrongly though
Side note: When I was on holiday in Cuba in 2017 me and the wife got talking to an amazing, lovely Canadian lady. She told us she goes every year to the same place and takes 2 suitcases, 1 to honour her late husband (a doctor) filled with medical supplies to donate and 1 with her personal items. We sat and had a coffee with her, just a shame we met her on our last day out there.
Best vacation I ever had. Vancouver Island. Took the ferry up from Tswoassan, spent a couple of days in Vancouver, then went to Nanaimo, had a great time. Great food, lovely place, super nice people.
As a Brit living in Canada for the last 6 months. I love the place I am not being forced to say this by any Canadian immigration official. Jokes aside it is a really cool place and I definitely enjoy it here. I know there are people who donāt like people in my position but I have never seen it first hand.
Going on holiday there (Toronto) in July- canāt wait! I perceive Canada as a more intelligent/ sophisticated/ European version of America. With nicer people.Ā
Hold Canada very highly. I lived in Vancouver for three months years back and had the time of my life. Everyone seemed so friendly, beer tasted good, lots of fun!
Canada served incredibly in both wars. Their ferocity at Vimy ridge and Paschendale were incredible feats. You stood beside the Brits when we declared war against Germany in ww2, I know they were obliged to as a crown colony but it was down to your parliament how much. Your navy stood beside our merchant navy to get supplies to the uk in the battle of the Atlantic, your troops took Juno beach on DDay and pushed further into France than any other force on the day. We should hold Canada in a high regard!
Love Canada, one of the countries that isnāt just an ally but outright family. The CANZUK nations (plus Ireland) are about as close as any countries can get.
Great place. Only ever been to Toronto, Shakespeare, Niagara and surrounding areas. Really want to go back to west coast.
A few too many bums and opiates around the city and shopping centre which surprised me a bit. Saw a man in full ghillie suit on the subway!? And very polite (not used to vulgar or adult jokes!)
I used to think it was like a nicer less crazy version of the US. Which is probably even more true today!
Had a great time in a few bars during those visits too!
I'm a postman and one of my customers has a Canadian partner who comes and stays for parts of the year, I've never met a more warm and friendly person. If the majority of Canadians are like her then Canada must be a wonderful place. I'd love to visit one day.
Love it! I worked in Vancouver for while, and Iāve visited most of the the major cities and always had a good time. I really loved Montreal, although Iām more suited to the Vancouver climate. Iād happily move there if I didnāt have circumstances keeping me in Scotland.
Incredibly nice people. Extraordinarily friendly, and laid-back. Very in-touch with nature. Spectacular scenery. intrinsically inclusive and multicultural.
Have never been, but my great grandad fought as part of the Canadian Mounted Fusiliers during WWII. No one in the family seems to know why as to the best of our knowledge there is no Canadian history with our family. I have a cousin in America who is desperately trying to find out if the great grandad had Canadian citizenship and if he can claim it!

It's amusing in these current times that Canada is SO back on our radar, when perhaps we ignored it for years.

I think we underrated it for years and now it has become more important in our links and relationship.

Love Canada. Did my 6th form work experience at Memorial University, St Johnās. Loved it.
Iām very supportive of the various CANZUK proposals Iāve seen. There seem to be huge economic opportunities for the UK and Canada in particular.
Cosmic-Hippos@reddit
Oscar Peterson, Rush and now Angine de Poitrine. I feel thankful to Canada.
Crazy_Breakfast_6327@reddit
Great country I would love to explore right across.
FearlessLime8089@reddit
They like Canada because they donāt Canada. Specifically they donāt know about all the utterly whack born-again Christians.
Instead they see it as a Scotland or a NZ. A poor little put upon country having to grow up in the shadow of a power house.

I visited about 20 years ago and loved it.

Some of my favourite YouTubers are Canadian.
As is at least one of my favourite actors.
Plus Iām only having Canada Dry with my whisky.
As far as I know, Canadians invented poutine.
It would appear that Canada is a force for goodš
Nervous_Tourist_8699@reddit
I really like Canadians and Canada. Bsnff is beautiful as is Whistler. I wish our PM would also put his elbows up more. You say āaboutā wrongly though
No_Feedback_7772@reddit
Canada and Canadians are cool.
Silent_Scientist_991@reddit
We live in Dallas, but LOVE the time we've spent in Canada.
We honeymooned in Vancouver/Whistler way back in 2002, spent a little time in Toronto and Niagara in 2017, and we'll be visiting Montreal in June.
Great neighbors, even though we haven't been the easiest to deal with.
ZazzNazzman@reddit
Kinda cold but other than that seems like a nice place. Govt is screwy though.
Ok_Traffic_3240@reddit
Always wanted to go there!!

Canada, the older, polite, sensible child. We love you to bits.

You guys are cool and the kind of allies every country needs. Every Canadian I've met so far has been cool.

The Quebecois make the Parisians look good, but otherwise, Canada's quite alright.
SashalouAspen4@reddit
Ummmmm Brits in QC here. I strongly disagree with this statement. The hardcore Quebecois are like MAGA but French
Nyneeve@reddit
Love it. I have friends in Toronto so visit regularly
Greners@reddit
As a Brit living in Canada for the last 6 months. I love the place I am not being forced to say this by any Canadian immigration official. Jokes aside it is a really cool place and I definitely enjoy it here. I know there are people who donāt like people in my position but I have never seen it first hand.
JimmyHaggis@reddit
Nothing but respect for Canada and its people. If the US was run by grown-ups they would much more similar to their northern neighbours.
tyger2020@reddit
Not in a rude way but pretty uninterested.
It's very much just a bigger, colder, more boring version of the UK to me (except it does have far prettier mountains!)
Willing-Rest-758@reddit
Canada is cool. It's like if America was still run by Europe.Ā
Silent-Shoulder9626@reddit
A very beautiful country filled with even more beautiful people. So friendly, welcoming and laid back.

Specialist-Salt-3949@reddit
As a Brit, I have very positive views about Canada and Canadians generally.
Pukit@reddit
Orange_Codex@reddit
Bros.
Including the French ones.
Canadians are also responsible for one of my favourite songs (Unleash the Archers' Northwest Passage).
Puzzled-Horse279@reddit
Canada? USA? Same thing
Both even have a random community of french speakers in the South East. The Quebois and Cajuns.
IndigoGemDragon@reddit
You are family.
Ben-D-Beast@reddit
Love Canada, one of the countries that isnāt just an ally but outright family. The CANZUK nations (plus Ireland) are about as close as any countries can get.

i intend to visit the rockies next year.
please, stay canadian - do not be a 51st state.
Admirable-Dark2934@reddit
Great place. Only ever been to Toronto, Shakespeare, Niagara and surrounding areas. Really want to go back to west coast. A few too many bums and opiates around the city and shopping centre which surprised me a bit. Saw a man in full ghillie suit on the subway!? And very polite (not used to vulgar or adult jokes!) I used to think it was like a nicer less crazy version of the US. Which is probably even more true today! Had a great time in a few bars during those visits too!

Edit: Apparently it's the modern name for British North America.
It's alright, apart from the the bits that think they're French.

I'm a postman and one of my customers has a Canadian partner who comes and stays for parts of the year, I've never met a more warm and friendly person. If the majority of Canadians are like her then Canada must be a wonderful place. I'd love to visit one day.

Bloody loved what little I saw of it. Went MontrƩal in 2003 and 2016 to see family. Poor as shit each time so just knocking about. Summer both times, absolutely lovely place the people were all lovely apart from one waitress that wouldn't switch from French to English. Apparently this was a big thing, but I didn't know and was excited to try my abismal year 7 French.
