what would you do with a month off when you’re unable to leave the house?

You aren’t doing nothing, you are recovering from a major accident, and you have concussion. Give yourself a break (but try to keep your mind and body a little active).

How can I lose weight pretty fast?

Posted by Various_Extreme_8773@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 279 comments

LochNessMother@reddit

I don’t have any advice. But just to say you are not alone. The one thing I was happy about when I was diagnosed with bowel cancer was that I might lose some weight. Fat chance. My brief and very unscientific survey of people I know of who’ve had bowel cancer says that you put on weight, not lose it.

What's the etiquette for the priority bus seats?

LochNessMother@reddit

On the one hand, you should probably shouldn’t sit i priority seats if you don’t need them. On the other hand, you say they make your motion sickness better, I’ve never heard of someone getting motion sick on the bus, so you DO need them (just not as much as many other people)

It’s not what I want, it’s not what I think is good parenting, but yeah, we had about 3 very traumatic years when she was little (thank you bowel cancer) and separation anxiety particularly at bed time is one do of the lovely scars it left us. (Yes we are working on it, yes it’s taking time)

Has anyone else been offered crazy NHS appointments?

I think evening and weekend appointments are amazing, they help clear the backlog, but also mean you don’t have to miss work. When you have complex medical stuff going on, the appointments can really mount up. 3am however is a bit ridiculous.

From what I have heard from non-Cornish who have moved down there, it is just as pronounced. But then those people are the ones who have left again, so maybe they were more sensitive. But yes it’s due to being a playground.

I didn’t growing up - we had big paintings over the fireplace. But an over-mantle mirror is totally a thing (that’s what it’s called). We have one that hides our big giant telly. It was insanely expensive, I love it.

Do you know anyone who used to be famous but now... isn't?

I mean that’s the thing about music. Apart from a handful, none of the people with name recognition make anything more than a middle class income, and most are scraping by. Being famous does not equal being rich.

Is it normal to be hungry all the time?

Posted by Rosiebunny-4230@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 177 comments

LochNessMother@reddit

It could be salt. Are you getting enough? I recently had to go on an insane fast (medical) and I found that the light headed sick hungry feeling could be managed with a quick lick of salt.

How often do you replace your toilet brush? It’s got to be the filthiest item in a home but most of us seem to ignore it sitting there for years on end.

Are my parents using me for money?

Posted by Impressive_Rate_2456@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1029 comments

LochNessMother@reddit

The money seems completely reasonable: you are 28 and £500pcm for rent is not a lot (I’m in London, there are parts of the country where it might be closer to market rent) Your relationship with them on the other hand seems very problematic, and if I was you I’d be using your current reduced rent to save up a good amount of money so you can move out and try to heal things from a distance.

What kind of Mother’s Day gifts actually feel thoughtful (not just the usual flowers)?

Posted by Quiet_Cartoonist4456@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 84 comments

LochNessMother@reddit

Depends. Is this your mother, or the mother of your children. If it’s the latter, then she just wants a day off, take the kids out, give her a day at a spa. If it’s the former, and you’ve left home, then she just wants a day with you, so spend some time with her. If she’s your mother and you still live at home, then you really need to pay her some attention and spend time with her because you should know what she wants by now.

Is it reasonable to only go to one day of a 3 day wedding?

Posted by DryJackfruit6610@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 333 comments

LochNessMother@reddit

Re frame it - you’ve been invited to a 3 day party in a field. There’s a barn and some yurts. There will be different activities one you’ll have to dress up for and you’ll chip in to tidy up at the end. Is that an outrageous invitation (I don’t think it is), but it’s up to you whether you go to some or all. You’ll probably have more fun if you go all in, but maybe getting to know new people and partying isn’t your thing.

LochNessMother@reddit

This sounds like a DIY big party, slightly hippy wedding. I’ve been to one and it was one of the best weddings I’ve been to. Everyone has time to actually get to know each other and helping out brings people together. Yes clearing up at the end is part of the deal, but there are so many people that it is fun and goes by really quickly.

Are you sure it’s a 3 day wedding and not a party in a field with a wedding at the end? Aka - do you really need fancy clothes for all 3 days? My cousin had a 3 day wedding in Finland. Half the guest were camping, and no one dressed up apart from at the proper party.

20 years ago, I was living with friends in a flat in Hoxton, we partied and worked and had fun. I was anxious most of the time. 2 years later I bought a flat with one of my flat mates, it was a magical time, all my friends close at hand, living in central London, earning enough to save loads and pay a mortgage, I was anxious and overwhelmed most of the time. I feel like that was yesterday. But no, I’ve been married and had a kid and had cancer and I’m rebuilding my life. And I’m less anxious now… because I found out I have ADHD. So much makes sense, but I wish I could have those 20 years back.

Non-native speaker question: what does “dear” really mean in the UK?

Posted by nsnakers@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 281 comments

LochNessMother@reddit

Ok. Rolls up sleeves… 1). Dear Mrs Nsnackers Dear Sir/Madam Formal start to a letter / email 2) Oh dear! Polite expression of dismay 3) Dear dear. Closely related expression of comfort 4) Hello dear / my dear. Informal greeting. Usually said by an older woman. 5) would you be a dear and… Informal request for something, although again said by an older woman and really this is an order not a request. 6). That’s a bit dear - it’s really expensive. 7). Deer - homonym - a horned ungulate I’ve probably missed one or two, and there’s lots of nuance in uses 2-5.

After being isolated for so many years due to CPTSD, how can I reintegrate back into society and be around all humans at ease to connect and build relationships with?

Find a community garden near you and volunteer. Or if you like cooking, volunteer at a soup kitchen. Working with other people towards a common goal is really good for building social connections and practicing your people skills. There might be other things, a men’s shed? But those are two that spring to mind.

How popular are yogurt/cheesecake/quark bars in the UK (like YAAR or maybe some other brand)?

Waitrose had the YAAR bars for a while. They were really good, and I bought them a couple of times, but they were expensive (even for Waitrose). I’m not sure where they sit in UK snack habits. They aren’t cake or ice cream, but they aren’t health either.

If you won £100 million, how would you distribute it amongst friends and family, if at all?

Posted by PaddedValls@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1626 comments

LochNessMother@reddit

Ok. Id keep £10m for myself. I’d give my parents and brother 1m each. I’d put £2m in a high interest account for the kid. The tiny charity I work for needs a long term future that isn’t dependent on grant funding, so I’d give it a £10m endowment. Then the rest goes into a charitable trust and I give away the interest on £75m. Except, I forgot that as I’m a US/UK dual national the American government gets to take £24m before I see any, so actually it’s only a £50m Charitable Trust Oh and the first thing I’d do after the US get their bit is divorce my husband, so it’s only actually £38m. Work still gets their £10m endowment etc, but the trust is down to £15m, so that’s giving out about £750,000 a year. It’s a hard life.
