I just recently started running without music / podcasts after years of always listening to something. It's a revelation. It's early morning, so it's still dark. Despite being in a city, its quiet (well mostly besides the trains and that kind of thing). I don't think I'm going back. It was incredible to just take in the nothing for a bit.

I remember my dad printing out like 300 pages of root beer recipes on our dot matrix printer. It took ages and was making dot matrix noises all day. Dad never made a single batch.

Why don’t American people care the World Cup is happening?

Posted by Kalanak472@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 390 comments

Jolly-Bowler-811@reddit

Heh... Atlanta has been cramming 20 yrs of roadwork in to the last \~10 months trying to "look good" for the world cup. Our traffic was fucked before, but now its FUCKED and we haven't even started the actual event yet. We also have VERY shitty public transit, so traffic during will be even worse. I've been considering requesting to work remote during those events just for the sake of my sanity and I'm not a guy that likes working remote (kids at home and no home office).

Do you think spanking kids died with our generation?

Posted by Brilliant_Addendum56@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 874 comments

Jolly-Bowler-811@reddit

That's the rub though, isn't it? I'm not going to sit here and defend spanking, but I've seen WAY too many kids (teens / twentysomethings) that can't believe they just got hit in the mouth (or worse) for something they did or said. It's as if they never considered that someone might actually do that. Society as a whole is trending toward less violence, but having an understanding that violence is absolutely still on the table with the right person is kind of an important thing to learn when the stakes are low. Hope that makes sense.

Just commented this myself. This gives me the impression they have the taste / consistency of Vienna Sausages. Not great, and not a good representation of a good hot dog.

I swear to god if someone ever serves me a hot dog out of a jar, I'm throwin' hands. Just seems off-putting to me. They are supposed to be in plastic packages of 10 with buns sold separately in packs of 8.

What's the longest running car you've seen owned by someone who did the least amount of upkeep and maintenance?

Jolly-Bowler-811@reddit

Eh, well, my '06 Wrangler was still going strong at 300k when I traded it. I did the bare minimum of maintenance - added oil when it was low, changed the filter when I thought about it. For at least a year, the radiator was full of water from a pond along the side of a trail where the hose blew off and puked it's contents all over. The pieces of the interior that weren't hard plastic were all fucked from years in the sun and rain. So, I guess that one.

For whatever reason, weekends spent camping feel longer than weekends home. And that despite usually going to bed earlier than I do at home. I don't know if it's just that time moves slower when there's no TV or internet or something else, but I love it.

Well, I can tell you that the odds of a newly widowed, new mother that just came in to millions of dollars in oil money deciding that she wants to go be a bartender are vanishingly low.

Daughter called crying. She has a '12 Honda Fit w/ 130K. Seems to run great. Took it in for A/C service. Mechanic told her she needed lots of service - about $750 - which she does not have. I think most is just sched maint - listed below. Which does she really need? Which can she pass on?

>It's not a hard job, but it's not fast, either I've explained this to sooooo many people that think prices are out of line. A job can be very, very simple from a technical standpoint, but take ages. As a for instance, changing the air filter and spark plugs on my motorcycle. It's about \~$70 in parts. But to install them, I have to take the seat, tank, side panels, and airbox out and then have a few special tools to be able to reach in to the cramped space provided to access the plug. Just getting TOO the spark plug is about 45 minutes to an hour of work. And then after that, I have to put it all back together.

what’s something about cars that most people misunderstand?

Jolly-Bowler-811@reddit

Maintenance and CLEANING. You don't need a deep detail, but regularly cleaning road grime, salt, bird shit, and the rest off the outside will extend the life of driveline components, make it easy to spot leaks, and prevent premature paint failure. Cleaning shit out of the inside will prevent electronics from being damaged from the coffee you spilled, seat belt buckles jammed up with cracker crumbs... goes x1000 if you have kids.

2 guys I work with had this same issue. One on a Yukon and one in one of the pick ups. We kept giving the boss a hard time as he drove around in a loaner vehicle for the better part of a year waiting on a replacement motor. The truck guy was able to negotiate his way out of the first vehicle and in to a new one. Pretty crazy to have it happen to 2 people back to back.

At a mechanical level, why has Toyota engineering surpassed Honda in terms of reliability?

Posted by arifl5@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 162 comments

Jolly-Bowler-811@reddit

>when compared to most other brands I think that's the important distinction. Even a Toyota that's less reliable than previous Toyotas is going to be MORE reliable than many of it's competitors. Time will tell whether my 4th Gen Tacoma exhibits any of the issues others have seen (only 20k in to it). Our 2012 4runner has taken a lot of abuse and isn't any worse for wear.

I recently replaced my ancient Jeep with a Toyota. Afterwards, I asked my wife if she was ready for a new car. "Why? The 4Runner hasn't even hit 250k?" She's not even a "car person" and she knows that thing has years of service left in it.

Absolutely true. Thinking back to "Snowpocalypse" in Atlanta 10 yrs ago, I can't tell you how many people knew their car had 4wd, but had no idea how to engage it. A lot of them in the ditch assuming 4wd was just "on". Anyone with AWD was much better off.

That's how it is here on the east coast - Plenty of forests, but when you're in there, the underbrush, kudzu, and rhododendron is so thick, you don't really get that sense of being alone. Sometimes its the opposite. You feel like its so dense, someone could be RIGHT THERE and you'd never know.

This place we were in was more than 80 miles from the nearest interstate. Looking on the map, it's about 20 miles as the crow flies to the nearest named "town" the only structures in that town are a gas station and a post office (it might actually be the same building). I ain't gonna post the name because I want to go back and I don't want to find some random Redditor in my spot!

Coming from the East Coast, it's actually REALLY HARD to get away from everything. Even when we're wild camping out in the national forest, You're rarely THAT far from people. You can see it at night where the lights from the city still glow even if the city itself is beyond the horizon. Unless you're willing to hike for a very long time, it's refreshing, but still rare to feel as alone as you do in the desert.

100% this. I have never felt so free as when I was camping in the middle of the desert. Something about being able to see very far and not see another person was amazing.

Totally opposite for me. I can go hang out under a tree to get out of the direct sun, I can walk in to any store / house / car and instantly cool off. Cold though? I'm either wearing an uncomfortable amount of clothing, waiting for a car to heat up, or waiting till my limbs thaw out after being outside. There's a reason I left Vermont as soon as I could and moved to Atlanta.

What are you guys opinions on your credit score system ?

Posted by One-Technician-1292@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 368 comments

Jolly-Bowler-811@reddit

The score system doesn't really bother me, but I'm also not a guy drowning in debt. I use my credit cards for pretty much every purchase, get the rewards for doing so, but pay them off monthly and track spending against my budget as if it were cash. In return, my score gets me the best rates on any loans I need to take out - say buying a car for instance. I always get qualified quickly because my score stays high. The debt only compounds if you don't pay it off (spending more than you actually make). It's very easy to reap big credit card rewards and never pay the credit card company a dime.

That makes sense, and I probably would have been fine with that. Just.. you know when you're expecting a certain texture and then its very much not that? It was that scenario. In this case, it wasn't a situation of missing meat and potatoes, it was just a big ol' crockpot full of carrots and gravy.
