What do you consider to be the quintessential American vehicle?

Posted by L0st_in_the_Stars@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 342 comments

Choose your own criteria. it could be from any era. Pick a car, or a truck, or a motorcycle, or something horse-drawn, or aquatic, or flying. Whatever.

I would say the most “American” car to me is a top trim 1/2 ton pickup whether it be Ram, Chevy, or Ford. All of them are varying degrees of reliability, cost, vs ability but all of them are uniquely American and are a staple ranging among everyone from construction workers to CEOs since they come in so many different configurations from just barebones like the tradesmen to the denali where I’d consider it an upscale luxury vehicle with extreme capability. Otherwise while I like luxury brands like Cadillac I feel like a lot of people like me have soft spots for our first cars we really loved. My first car was a Honda civic but I never really enjoyed a vehicle until I owned my first pickup and my first muscle car

As far as iconic American vehicles that can be recognized worldwide, a Jeep CJ from between 1944 and 1986.

Willy's was the originator of the jeep period, although some other manufacturers also made them during the war.
View on Reddit #76508114

john_hascall@reddit

This is not correct. Bantam was the originator. Willys made the most during WWII with Ford close behind.
View on Reddit #76513191

texasrigger@reddit

Bantam basically made the proto-jeep but Willys Overland improved the design and it was their variant that became the WWII standard. The wartime Fords were GPW's where the "W" acknowledged that it was the Willy's design. So yeah, I guess you are right in that it began with Bantam but the Jeep that would go on to become legendary was Willys Overland.

My sample size is limited, but in my experience (learned to drive on a F150) the rivalry is heavily weighted towards Ram owners trying to crack jokes about Fords and Ford owners being too busy with other shit to give a fuck.

Any pickup truck, a classic ford mustang, or a classic ford bronco. I think any of the 3 immediately scream "America"
View on Reddit #76696639

Shadesmith01@reddit

A Mustang or a Pickup. The Pickup can be a Chevy or a Ford, but... It's a pickup. Not one of these fake-ass extended-cab short-bed yuppie mobiles people want to call pickups, but a good, standard transmission, old-fashioned pickup truck. F150-350 comes to mind. A solid work vehicle.
View on Reddit #76696110

Cheap_Coffee@reddit

The answer will change with the age of the poster. I'd say the quintessential vehicle is a big-ass 1970s full size station wagon. They used to be ubiquitous before the advent of SUVs. As my father would say, "they're big enough to carry an 4x8 sheet of plywood" (with the tailgate down. This was a time when pickups were still utility vehicles, not suburban chariots.
View on Reddit #76679464

DMmeNiceTitties@reddit

It's gotta be a truck. And according a Ford commercial I saw recently, the F150 truck is the most popular truck year after year.
View on Reddit #76464231

Extr4Sp1cy@reddit

I think part of the reason it’s the most popular vehicle is because of the amount of F150’s construction firms buy. It’s almost impossible not to spot one on any given freeway on a weekday from 7AM-9AM. I work for a telecommunications contractor and we just purchased x50 F150 work vehicles for all the managers.
View on Reddit #76466307

Alfonze423@reddit

Actually it's because Ford counts the F-150, F-250, F-350, ... through the F-850 together when they say "F-Series trucks are the best-selling vehicle in America." The F-150 on its own, without the heavy-duty or commercial models added in, is in second or third place nowadays.
View on Reddit #76474721

84UTK07@reddit

Silverado and RAM heavy duty trucks are included in their numbers too, so what is the difference?
View on Reddit #76659345

tearsonurcheek@reddit

Even if you only count the F-150 by itself, the only truck that beats it is if you combine sales of the Chevy Silvarado and GMC Sierra (mechanically the same truck). 2024 numbers (approximate): F-150: 758K Chevy Silverado: 555K GMC Sierra: 322K Ram slots in between Chevy and GMC, with 370K.

View on Reddit #76466536

suffaluffapussycat@reddit

Wasn’t GMC originally a way to let Pontiac dealers sell Chevy trucks?
View on Reddit #76466768

Correct. Buick and Cadillac too.
View on Reddit #76512132

ZynkTheCollector@reddit

Chevy is owned by General Motors. Chevy produces and designs the Silverado, and GM takes the Silverado, adds a few rich people features and the GMC logo and sells it as a different truck. It’s basically a higher trim with a different logo

Toss up between the safety bicycle and the Ford Model A. The safety bicycle, although invented in England, quickly made it's way to the USA and reshaped cities and expanded the road network. Bicycles were more pleasant on smooth roads. The Model A was largely responsible for modern American car culture and the decline of railroads and public transit. It was able to use the nice smooth roads the bicycle craze had created to quickly move people and materials, and expanded the range of the bicycle's personal freedom. Everything else in American car culture followed along behind those two major events.

View on Reddit #76485221

DiscontentDonut@reddit

Gonna have to jump on the bandwagon and say F-150. They're not incredibly impressive trucks. They're just standard flat beds. But when someone says, "picture a truck," with no description? That's the one we're all thinking. Then there's the advertising. America this, America that, bald eagle flying overhead as the truck drives off-road in the commercial. It's also one of the most accessible vehicles. You can have a cab with 2 seats or 4, high up or lower, you can keep it clean or have it look like hell. It belongs. I'm personally one to purchase foreign made vehicles, and I'm a sedan girl. But outside of myself, just thinking of the average, faceless American, definitely a Ford F-150.
View on Reddit #76465696

TSells31@reddit

>standard flat beds. Flat beds are literally *flat* beds. Like the type of tow trucks where the whole bed rolls back and they winch your car up, that’s a flat bed. Pickup trucks have tailgated beds, not flatbeds (unless they have been converted, which does happen sometimes).

I'm grateful you were equally kind in using this as a teaching moment rather than a snarky remark.

I wasn’t going to get specific (yes, my Dad has and F150), but I was going to to say in my area, a pickup truck in the family (whether you do farm work or whatnot — always need to move/haul something). Families—an SUV—make/model depending on funds or desire to keep up with the Jones’. I drive a hybrid midsize suv because I had dogs + the city I lived in had terrible drivers (retirement + college town). I’ve been glad more than once to have the stability/weight of the car. My BF has an electric car. We have a home charger, but our region of the country isn’t very electric-car friendly. You have to plot and go out of your way for a lot of trips. Here’s to an improved infrastructure!
