What is a very American comfort activity that people genuinely enjoy doing in their free time?

For me, when I get free time, I usually sleep, scroll, or draw something. So I’m not asking about tourist stuff, just regular things people actually love doing to relax or feel happy.
strawberrysunday00@reddit
Lots of people like watching baseball in the summer.
notanaardvark@reddit
When I still lived on Long Island, my most "it's really summer" thing was to drive to the beach listening to baseball on the radio.
-Boston-Terrier-@reddit
There’s little I enjoy more than hanging out at the beach with a baseball game on the radio.
Yotsubauniverse@reddit
It doesn't feel like Summer at my house unless my Dad has a grill is going on the back deck listening to Cardinals baseball.
Aggressive-Emu5358@reddit
I’d rather be tar and feathered
strawberrysunday00@reddit
I actually would too. Lol
CommanderKrieger@reddit
Sitting on my front porch, in my rocking chair, watching the world go by.
Mad-Hettie@reddit
I don't have a porch but sitting on my back patio, in the morning, with a cup of coffee is pretty great too
Ok-Ad8998@reddit
I think I'll start doing that. I do have a nice back patio that's relatively private, although open to the sky. I retired since last summer and now have "sitting around" time in the mornings that I never had. I should sit out there when mornings get warm enough. And dry enough - it is 42f now with rain predicted all day.
Sea-Evidence-5523@reddit (OP)
Same brother
ItsLupeVelez@reddit
Yes. Especially if my cat joins me.. we could be there for hours :)
SisterLostSoul@reddit
Agree. When I had a balcony or patio, I loved sitting outside, drinking coffee, and reading a book in the morning.
Individual_Check_442@reddit
This is part of why I get up early, it’s my “me” time I watch the sunrise with my coffee every day.
itcheyness@reddit
I'm the opposite tbh
I like to be up as late as possible whenever I can be. The depths of nighttime where it's just me and the various nighttime animals is heaven for me lol
-Sanguinity@reddit
I like to watch the sun come up
Pumasense-2025@reddit
From Cal. also and Yep, me too. Most important time of the day! If is not windy, I am often there before bed as well.
Alternative-Law4626@reddit
Same. We had a great front porch in a rental a couple of years ago and really miss it, but the back deck has been a great substitute.
Streamjumper@reddit
I've enjoyed the occasional morning coffee sitting on the raggedy old deck on the back of my house these last few years, no matter the season, watching light shining off the pond through the trees.
Gonna miss that deck, but in July it'll be coming down to put a nice new patio in, and I think I'll be loving that too, despite the loss of about 2 feet of elevation.
Acceptable_Tea3608@reddit
So why not a new porch?
Streamjumper@reddit
The deck was small and really felt like it separated you from the yard, plus the price of rebuilding and expanding it wouldn't really be worth it. A paved patio will pull the backyard together. Plus we get a few sitting walls and a fire pit right where we want one with the patio.
Acceptable_Tea3608@reddit
OK sounds nice.
Traditional-Job-411@reddit
This, because I don’t want to see other people. I want to enjoy being outside alone
jeffgrantMEDIA@reddit
When I had free time, I would sit in my back deck with my dog and just drink coffee and not think about a single thing.
Sea-Evidence-5523@reddit (OP)
This is so peaceful tbh, just sitting quietly and watching things pass feels like such an underrated reset

GrowlingAtTheWorld@reddit
I was gonna say sitting on the porch swing listening the breeze.
cornlip@reddit
I wish I could hear the breeze over all the semis that go by my house all day
GrowlingAtTheWorld@reddit
They should make a breeze if their own.
cornlip@reddit
A loud breeze, yes. It’s not relaxing outside at all unless it’s the middle of the night on a weekend. My house is currently shaking as I type this. I’m selling this as soon as I’m done with the upgrades.
EatFishKatie@reddit
Okay... Sitting on a porch swing watching a thunderstorm roll in is one of the greatest little joys the world has to offer. I love the smell of rain when it hits.
moonmoonboog@reddit
Thunderstorms are one of the biggest things I miss from the Midwest.
Traditional-Cry-3857@reddit
It is maybe the only thing I miss about Texas!
moonmoonboog@reddit
The dairy is also far superior from everything I’ve tried. Man does Wisconsin make some good cheese(I’m Minnesotan but can give them credit where it’s due)
Yotsubauniverse@reddit
Yes! And seeing lightning in the distance with little rolls of thunder. It is the ultimate experience.
McFlyyouBojo@reddit
Fun fact: that smell is called petrichor
GrowlingAtTheWorld@reddit
I used to go down to the jetty and watch the night time lightening storms roll in off the gulf, all from the safety of my car.
CommanderKrieger@reddit
Oh yes, a rainstorm coming in is one of those small joys to watch.
Marley455@reddit
And I'm doing exactly that at the moment.
gsxr@reddit
My first thought too. I can sit on my porch, in a rocking chair and the only other living thing I'll see or hear is cows and dogs. Not a single person for a mile, except my family. I've done the cafe thing in many countries in EU. Done it in every major city in the US....I'll take my front porch.
only1dragon@reddit
Are we the same person? Minus the family near? I sit on my front porch with coffee, dogs and listen to the cows and my horses in the distance.
gsxr@reddit
Clearly not the same. Don't much care for horses. But we can both agree sitting on the porch watching cows do stupid cow stuff is a dang fine morning.
only1dragon@reddit
Lol. I hate the cows. They destroy fences and ground. And liquid shit on tails. Yuck. The ones on my land are not ours but I want his lease up soon.
gsxr@reddit
100% agree about cows. Dumbest animals around. But they taste so dang good.
Eljay60@reddit
‘Dumbest animals’
Have you ever met a sheep?
only1dragon@reddit
Lol!!!! They are! I have met sheep but not around them much. I like goats but I have enough things to feed.
Eljay60@reddit
I’m a Christian (non-MAGA) but sometimes I wonder if God is trying to tell us something by continually comparing us to sheep and lambs in the Bible…
Goats, on the other hand, are absolutely delightful, and only a Jersey calf has more barnyard appeal than a baby goat.
only1dragon@reddit
Interesting thought. I am spiritual, but not christian, and bring me the mischief making, funny and naughty goats. My AQHA stud colt is also a delightful guy.
Eljay60@reddit
I’m officially envious. I haven’t had a horse for several years and I’m doubtful if my knees can tolerate much riding now. But I keep looking at driving ponies and I’m hoping one magically appears in front of me.
only1dragon@reddit
Just worked our friesian cross ground driving. I don't care for him he is very dumb. I like mustangs and QH. 9 horses currently plus I raise, show and work dogs.

Bro, love some porch time. Porch or patio.
Saltpork545@reddit
I have a place with a front porch that has sunsets and man, a porch swing and the sun setting, I get it. I don't think I can ever live in a place where I can't watch the sunset now.
boomgoesthevegemite@reddit
I sit on my back deck and watch birds and squirrels. Listen to the creek, yell at my dogs for trying to eat sticks…good times.
CommanderKrieger@reddit
Yup. Dogs eating sticks or the wonderful “I don’t know what that is, I don’t really want to know it is, but I also know you don’t need to be eating it” is always fun.
Sal1160@reddit
I need a bigger front porch.
Spent some time down in the Carolina’s a ways back and got to enjoy the thunderstorms rolling in. Absolutely loved it
shadowmib@reddit

CommanderKrieger@reddit
I’m more of a sweet tea guy, but lemonade is also good. Never have taken to liking coffee.
JingJang@reddit
Yep, sitting on the back porch watching birds and my dogs in the yard.
It's a wonderful thing.
Awdayshus@reddit
I used to live in a neighborhood where no one had front porches. But on a nice day, it was super common for people to open their garage and sit on lawn chair in the shade.
McFlyyouBojo@reddit
Came to say this. If im on my front porch, im watching cars go by, listening to kids play and sports practices across the street and the wind chimes behind my head, also looking at the trees.
If im on my backporch im looking at the squirrels and birds in the woods, listening to the wind whisper through the trees, and maybe looking up at the sky in the evening when I see trees 360 around with a hole in the middle that leads to the sky, and im watching the trees slowly move back and forth above me
shocktopus89@reddit
Yes 100%, I feel like I am instinctually drawn to a porch swing with the sound of a windchime and rumbling thunder as my background music.
Better-Strategy8798@reddit
I hope you have a shotgun in this scenario. Im not american but this is what I picture in USA with people on their porches polishing their shotguns
CommanderKrieger@reddit
I mean I do own various firearms, but they’re honestly more for collecting or just shooting steel targets and having fun with friends purposes. They don’t really come out of their cabinet unless I am doing something related to them, but I wouldn’t say I just sit around with them out, fiddling around while relaxing.

Hell yeah. I used to work graveyard shift and would get home at 6:30 am. My favorite way of winding down was to sit on my east-facing front porch with a nice beverage and smoke a bowl while watching the sunrise.
irishgator2@reddit
Whoa - was about to comment the same thing! Grab a beer, something to read, maybe some music and sit on the porch. Say hi to neighbors as they pass.
It’s a very American activity - most countries don’t have porches or in the case of Europe (only other place I’ve lived) neighbors don’t just stop by to chit chat.

Same here. On the deck watching the birds in the trees and using the bird bath.. Admiring the little lizards running around doing push ups in the sun. Basking in the outdoor breeze and and just watching the clouds floating in the sky above the river below our property.
Peace, quite, nature.

Check out the Merlin Bird App. It identifies bird sounds. I'll set my phone up out of reach and just chill on my patio with my coffee. It's cool to see what birds are flitting around the neighborhood.

Sea-Evidence-5523@reddit (OP)
This feels so peaceful, just you, the road, and some good music
sharpshooter999@reddit
If i ever won the lottery, that's what I'd do. Get a newer (but not brand new) vehicle, pack my bags and just drive. No real plan, just grab a hotel/motel room in whatever town I get tired in. I'd be gone for weeks
Marley455@reddit
My goal once I retire is to drive the boundary of the US. I would start and end in Michigan and take however long it takes.
sharpshooter999@reddit
I've always wanted to drive the boundary of Nebraska at least. I've somehow made it to the four corners of Kansas over the years but there's parts of my home state ive never been to
CNB-1@reddit
I'm pretty sure that if I did that I'd end up driving south and west until I hit a beach somewhere in Baja California.
ShadA612@reddit
That sounds amazing
Gertrude_D@reddit
I concur, that would be a fun trip. However, as a fellow midwesterner, I feel your pain at our starting point. I am closer to the Mississippi, but it still feels somewhat painful taking the time to get to somewhere interesting (and by interesting I mean not familiar). Driving to Colorado kills me every single time.
luisapet@reddit
Me too! I really want google maps to add a "scenic route" feature as well as a "roads you've never taken" feature.
Murderhornet212@reddit
It hurts at $4.39 a gallon but I can’t resist it sometimes too.
Rourensu@reddit
$4.39? I’m happy when I can get $6.34.
Well, my car requires 91 octane, so otherwise it’d be closer to like $6.10ish, but still…
Figgler@reddit
Does anyone you know complain about the gas prices? I've talked to people about the crazy gas prices in CA compared to every other state and they always try to justify it somehow
Rourensu@reddit
I don’t know that many people, but yes, we/they (and various politicians with the upcoming election) all think gas prices are too damn high.
Just today at work two coworkers were complaining about it.
Murderhornet212@reddit
Yikes. A couple of months ago it was under $3.00 here most of the time, and now it’s pretty consistently over $4.00. I got $3.90 a few weeks ago and was psyched about it. I drive like 70 miles a day for my commute so it’s adding up. I suppose if it went on long enough I’d get used to it and adjust, but I’m hoping I won’t have to. Honestly, I’m going to keep my eye out and if I see it drop under $4 I’m going to fill it whether I need to or not yet.
Rourensu@reddit
If I remember correctly, when I started driving in like 2010 it was about $2.90 for me. Right before the Ukraine stuff started a few years ago it was like $4.50ish then suddenly it was like $5.50 and kept going up. About 6 months ago I was happy that it was under $6, but now it's up again.
Figgler@reddit
I just got back from a road trip and California and I think the average price one the coast was $6.20 a gallon, it was almost $10 at one gas station in the Mojave area. I thought it was insane but no one seemed to see an issue, it's just what it costs.
MiddlePop4953@reddit
This isn't a relaxing activity for myself, but I do think it's a very American relaxing activity. I know a lot of people who do this. This, or work on their vehicles.

This is the most America answer. Other places do other things listed here, but American car culture is peak. This is the answer.
Libertas_@reddit
Before gas prices went insane I’d drive up to the mountains for a hike or a nice drive.
Personal-Presence-10@reddit
Yup. I work for a National Forest and sometimes I’ll take the long way home on the back roads with the windows down and the music up and just enjoy the drive. My family and I went on a road trip around Europe 10 years ago. Just rented a car in Copenhagen and drove all around Germany, Czechia, and Austria. Nothing like a good road trip. We had some people we were meeting up with in Germany and they couldn’t believe that’s how we chose to do our trip. But we saw so many little towns and sights we wouldn’t have seen otherwise!
Saruster@reddit
I truly enjoy driving and taking the long way home after a stressful day at work is the best way to get in a better mood.
I also visited Europe and just drove around. My “base camp” was in northern Netherlands and I would do day trips to surrounding countries. My thing is castles so I’d map out a route that would hit a few in a round trip and just have a blast.
Of course I had to visit Neuschwanstein and that was a longer trip. I drove down one day, stayed overnight, visited Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, hung out in that adorable little village for a while and stayed another night, hit up a some castles and ruins in Lichtenstein and then headed back to the Netherlands. I took the long way back and stopped in Heidelberg for the night with more stops the next day. It was glorious.
My Dutch friends thought I was nuts with such long drives and kept telling me how awesome their trains are, but it was the best way for me. I’m a woman, traveling solo, so I feel most comfortable and most in control if I’m in my own car rather than public transportation. And a nine hour drive is no big deal especially with such amazing scenery.
I want to do another such trip but in the British Isles. My concern is left hand driving though. I’m not sure how stressful that would make the trip.
Personal-Presence-10@reddit
Yes!! And that’s how we ended up spending all day in Wittenberg because we were just going to swing through and see the church but we ended up arriving in the middle of a full renaissance festival celebrating the 500th anniversary (this was in 2017). So we ended up spending all day there feeling like we stepped back in to medieval time. It was so cool and something we had no idea was happening. We just stumbled upon it. One of my favorite memories. Then we ran into one of the bands they had playing medieval instruments at the Copenhagen airport and got to talking to them and I shared the videos I took with them. They were so cool.
Gertrude_D@reddit
Those are the best memories!. We ended up spending half a day we didn't intend to picking blackberries on the coast of the Irish Sea. Sometimes things just happen and you have to go with it.
Gertrude_D@reddit
Hey - our family took a driving trip around Germany, Austria, Czechia and Poland too! Driving is always the best way to travel IMO. Those are some of the best memories and you get to see stuff like a WWII plane in someone's field next to the cows.

This reminded me of river floating in Bern, Switzerland. We were there a couple of summers ago during a heatwave and it was so cool that a lot of people float (most with no tubes or anything) in the river right through the city. There are steps to get out every hundred meters, I think, and walking paths on both sides of the river. We saw people dressed for work carrying dry bags and were told it's common to float during lunch or even to get to or from work. https://youtu.be/jUYIwjx9xYA?si=JF2yCgjcr0SpObIy

One of the largest hobbies in the world is gardening.
And in the USA, there are a lot of shooting, hunting...
And there are a lot of people who live to do things with their kids.
Remarkable_Table_279@reddit
A lot of Americans like to make/repair/fix things for fun. You’ll have people who restore a vintage cars, refurbish furniture, sew, 3D print, crochet, knit, cross-stitch scrapbook, paper craft, make cards, make jewelry, spin yarn, dye yarn, throw pots and really too many things to count. And that’s just people I know & myself and many have multiple hobbies that might be related or not.
Remarkable_Table_279@reddit

Early-Acanthaceae948@reddit
I'm not sure what being American has to do with it, it seems people in many different countries have similar hobbies. It is probably more related to financial freedom than country. To answer your question though I agree with many others- relaxing in my yard with loved ones, listening to wildlife while enjoying a beer or glass of wine. I also really enjoy gardening and making that chill space more beautiful is so rewarding. Hiking is another big one. Every now and then creativity strikes and I really enjoy painting.

I don't think there's anything inherently "American" that others don't also do. Depending on availability and the person, we keep afloat several entertainment industries.
Reading, gaming, outdoor adventures, gyms, breweries, art, DiY projects, animal caretaking, films, cooking/baking, etc.
Most people I know or encounter have a hobby that people in other countries can relate to.
Semirhage527@reddit
Driving for fun is the closest that comes to mind, only because we have so much open road and cheap gas relative to other countries.
But I agree with you, we are all humans and find joy in common things, most of the difference is just what we have access to.
Acceptable_Tea3608@reddit
Also regional. There are some things people in one region might do that doesn't get done in another section of the country. Usually due to weather.
DiscontentDonut@reddit
You know, that's very true. Terrain as well as weather. I live 30 minutes away from several beaches, including the ocean front of Virginia Beach. I'm so used to the summer = beach that it doesn't occur to me that some people don't have access to beaches commonly.

Walking down the street a ways to hang out with the other people who are hanging out on the front lawns. Our neighborhood is on a little loop street so there's only local traffic, so kids are outside playing constantly and us parents pick someone's lawn to hang out on while the kids play basketball or ride bikes or whatever.
It's one of the best parts of living in my neighborhood. I love it.

My partner & I like driving around at random, usually in less populated areas. Typically we stumble across a park where we can take a walk, and have lunch along the way. Sometimes we take a picnic, other times we find a restaurant. It's a very relaxing way to spend a day.

The US is a big place! In more rural areas hunting and fishing are pretty popular. I’ve noticed more game bars/cafes where they have different board games you can try.
There is always a sports bar.

First day of deer season might as well shut the whole town down.
2PlasticLobsters@reddit
My partner & I once made the mistake of deciding to hike on that day. Not being hunters, we had no idea till we got to the area. Suddenly there were camo-clad people everywhere. We noped outta there real quick.
I don't begrudge them their fun, but we had no idea how good anyone's aim was.
Overall_Occasion_175@reddit
The most American thing that's probably ever happened to me:
In October of 2023, Maine had its first mass shooting. There was a huge manhunt for the shooter in my town. We were asked to all shelter in place. The shooting took place on Wednesday. He had not been found yet early on Friday, and deer season was supposed to start Saturday. The state publicly announced postponing it for the surrounding towns. People were pissed. They found his body that evening. Literally within minutes of finding him, I received an amber alert-style notification on my phone saying "The search is over for Mr Card. The caution is over. Hunting may resume."
715_user@reddit
Sounds familiar, obviously you are also in the Midwest. Thanksgiving in some families takes a backseat to rifle season. Birthdays definitely do
Overall_Occasion_175@reddit
Maine is also very much like this. I imagine more rural parts of the south as well. It's definitely not exclusively Midwest.
LemonSkye@reddit
Rural NY and PA are like this as well. I believe the first day of deer season is a school holiday in PA.

I think we perceive time by how many memories we have. If you're just doing the same set of things you always do—sitting on the same couch, staring at a screen—you don't have any reason to remember as much of it, and so it seems like it takes up less time. If you're in a new environment, your brain is more active, and your perception is that more time is passing because when think back to it, there are more memories to go over.

In Michigan we love going to the beach or state park.
It's common to go out to dinner (usually tacos or burgers) then get ice cream at one of the many ice cream shops. Norms is close to where I live amd a very popular ice cream stop. Be careful, the ice cream sizes in Michigan are massive. A small is what you would consider a large in other states. Kid size here is a medium size in other states. Then we would go to the beach.
Sometimes we get food and ice cream at the beach but the prices are much higher.
In the winter we tend to stay indoors more and honestly are mostly focused on surviving the cold season without getting cabin fever too badly.

Driving is probably the most American thing based on what I know of other countries public transportation and Ik Europeans typically don’t like to drive for long distances. Pick an album, playlist or podcast and just take a ride with the windows down on a a nice not too busy road without any real destination in mind. Just cruising around town and coming back home.

Being a fan of a College sports team.
Waking up early, driving to the stadium, setting up a "tailgate" which can involve anything as simple as a cooler to something as complicated as a full blown kitchen with wide screen tvs and cocktail bar. You drink, eat, mingle with fellow fans (or rivals) and then eventually make your way over to the stadium where you "root for home team and against visitor". After the game you might go straight home in anger, or stick around a tailgate even more.
Likewise you can follow your team to away matches and that involves travel, hotel, social gathering, etc.
Then there are boosters that donate anywhere from a few bucks to hundreds of millions to the team.

Watching baseball and football are quintessentially American ways pass the time. Hunting and fishing as well. Not that people in other countries don't hunt and fish, but the accessibility of firearms and large number of public and private lands available to be hunted on on the USA make it, I think, a more popular activity here than most other places, with the possible exception of Canada. The majority of Americans never hunt, but in some parts of the country, most men, at least, either hunt, fish, or both. Where I grew up, hunting is a very popular activity, and one into which people put a lot of time and money. Fishing as well. We have so much coastline, plus huge numbers of lakes and rivers, and every state manages its fisheries in such a way that public fishing is a sustainable practice. Again, a lot of people don't fish, but in some places, it is extremely popular, and some people devote their lives to it. People fish in tournaments, make fishing TV shows and YouTube channels, and spend thousands of dollars on gear.

I like going down to the beach and listening to the ocean. It really let's my mind unwind and enjoy life for a while. I live in South Florida so it's quick and easy for me to get to a beach.

Sitting in my back garden, reading a book. Enjoying a nice cup of coffee and a pastry at a cozy coffee shop, preferably on a nice day on a patio. A leisurely hike. Strolling around a farmers market with my dog, pretending I don't see her picking up ground snacks as we walk by the popcorn vendor. Lots of my comfort activities involved being outside.
