Are sweet shops a big thing in England?

Posted by AcadiaRemarkable6992@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 143 comments

JK_UKA@reddit

We do have an authentic sweet shop locally, but they’re very rare. You know it’s authentic as it’s only open 5 hours a day and closes on Monday whereas the fake sweet shop for tourists will be open all hours into the late evening

What are you looking to do? Do you want to go to university or just a college course? I got into university doing an access course after only having 4 basic GCSE’s, many courses are pretty accessible if you’re willing to put the work in, you’ll need to speak directly to the place you want to study to get the exact requirements

Procedure for blood draw in UK?

I usually have a cotton wool bud taped down with scotch tape or they give you the cotton wool and tell you to hold it down for 15 seconds and then take it off and usually the blood as stopped

Why does no one call out disruptive behaviour in public in the UK?

Sounds like you’re part of the problem if you’re not going to say anything. People generally don’t to about confrontation, no one wants to be punched by an irate drunk. Did you approach the staff to deal with it?

There’s some leeway after the 9pm watershed. Generally has to be in context and not gratuitous otherwise people may complain to ofcom Ofcom also has a guide to the offensiveness of swear words and a guide to how they should and shouldn’t be used on tv https://www.ofcom.org.uk/siteassets/resources/documents/research-and-data/tv-radio-and-on-demand-research/tv-research/offensive-language-quick-reference-guide.pdf?v=326908

Doing it for every round seems a bit much but if you get the same server a few times and you want to reward them with a tip offer to buy them a drink. Say “one for yourself” and they’ll either charge you for a drink they’ll have later after their shift or take it as a tip for a couple of quid

Does every UK town have its own famous "homeless" person?

I wouldn’t call him homeless. He often ends up in one with metal doors and big locks. Mad Helen however… (though I’d be surprised is she’s still with us)

They’re pretty expensive but it’s cheaper than travelling to the US for a game. It’s been on tv quite a lot over the last 30-40 years so people just pick a team up whilst watching most of the time I would imagine.

Why is the variety of crisps so small?

Posted by Accomplished-Act-219@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 73 comments

JK_UKA@reddit

Some of the variety in supermarket is lacking because they focus on what sells the most. Once you find some random corner shop that is stacked with crazy flavours of crisps that’s where you want to go. Usually a little more expensive however.

Do any Brits follow American College Football?

Posted by tommy_two_tone_@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 120 comments

JK_UKA@reddit

I’m more interested in college football than I am in the NFL. Sky sports do show a match occasionally (notre dame are on this weekend) but I pay for an American sports service legit to watch all the games and all of the shows about it. I don’t even have a team I support really, an underdog winning is always fun to see, a big upset like NIU over notre dame was great last season They used to show a lot matches for £10 a month, basically all espn games were on. But since that service shut down im paying much more for it

Testing different mobile providers in apartment?

Posted by anotheruwstudent@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 21 comments

JK_UKA@reddit

You might be able to get a guide with the payg sims but it won’t show how reliable it was. When the networks get busy then service will slow down, I used to use a 5G Vodafone router and every day at 4pm onwards the speeds would drop to under 20mbps, sometimes even lower and sometimes you’d get dropouts where it was unusable. Overall it was a frustrating service, I was thankful for any wired service when I moved and was able to get it installed. Things are different for everyone with that service though, that’s the nature of it. It won’t be consistent in every place so it’s worth keeping that in mind and testing at multiple times over the course of a week or so.

When to use miles vs kilometers, stone vs kilograms, etc?

Posted by Potential-Mer1376@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 225 comments

JK_UKA@reddit

Miles are used for road signs so that is the predominant usage, KM is probably more for official things like road and rail planning etcZ Weight is probably more of a generational difference. Older people are more likely to use stones and pounds and produce is sold in metric units

Posted by Outrageous-Train6422@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 74 comments

What action do train companies actually take when someone doesn’t have a ticket?

Posted by OkEnd2704@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 27 comments

JK_UKA@reddit

If it’s a guard then they’ll probably get away with it; delays cost money and trying to sort it out might cost more than the fare. If there are revenue inspectors on the train or at stations (sometimes they’ll be at unstaffed stations trying to get people who know that they won’t need a ticket for the barrier) then they have more powers to make sure they get the name and address to send off a fine.

If I only get 30 MBPS with a 4G hotspot router, will a 5G one give any faster speeds?

Posted by Upper-Drop4827@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 14 comments

JK_UKA@reddit

I found that when I switched from a 4G router with EE to the Vodafone 5G one that the speeds were faster but there was a lot more interference and dropouts, I switched back to the more dependable 4G one in the end. You can look up where your most local masts are to see if there are some 5G ones active

How do I respond to British Gas after my decision in principle was pulled?

Posted by Old-Initiative2275@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 22 comments

JK_UKA@reddit

I had to contact the ombudsman over a faulty meter (not with British Gas) and they were great and I got compensation and the money I paid to get the meter inspected. But it does take time to resolve, probably 6 weeks to get to the point where it was investigated Make sure you have copies of emails and times you called and any transcripts from web chats if possible

Yeah I can’t be doing with the trays so shop at Ocado. Prices are about the same on average compared to the rest (or even less as Tesco minimum is £10 more than Ocado) and I also hardly ever have anything missing or a weird replacement compared to when I shopped at Tesco

Do vets charge for shaving matting out of a cat's fur?

My cat had the matting near the tail and when I went to the vet to have him weighed they just had the clippers there and were happy to trim it off. This was the pdsa though so maybe a private vet will bill for that

Moving practices might be better in the long run but a lot of them can be very similar: how are you going to get an appointment when you actually need to be seen by a doctor if you can even get one for a pharmacist. My new doctors arranged an appointment for me when I moved and the pharmacist phoned within a week. your situation is clearly untenable.
