Some questions? While currently watching all seasons of “8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown”…

• Are curse words allowed on all channels of British television?
-The TV broadcast standards here in the U.S. make for boring entertainment for “mature”adults. The mention of cock -n-balls, shit, fuck, etc. sounds common on British TV and is funny AF.
• Is Danny Dyer just an act or does he speak/act like that irl?
• Is Joey Essex just an act or does he speak/act like that irl?
• Why is making fun of the Welsh people a thing?
• Not a question, but if you close your eyes and listen to Sean Lock(RIP) speak he sounded like a younger Michael Caine.
NOTE: Please do not violate rule #4 with your answers. My previous post about Rachel Riley was removed by the mods because for your stated feelings about her. Bullying and harassment will be reported.

Swearing (any words) is allowed after 9pm (“watershed”) on terrestrial TV. Mild swearing (eg bloody, bollocks) might appear at any time, maybe with an advisory. - Danny Dyer is real, Joey Essex more of an act.
Burlington-bloke@reddit
As a bloody Canadian from bloody Nova Scotia, I use bloody all the bloody time! We also allow swearing after 9pm on TV
cpt_hatstand@reddit
Bloody isn't considered a swear word in the UK (maybe a very very very mild one for the under 10s)
Burlington-bloke@reddit
Some older people in Nova Scotia in their 80s think it's a "bad" word, same with "bugger" Now I live in Toronto. When I speak, they think I'm some sort of leprechaun pirate trying to pass himself off as a human. Toronto thinks THEY have the only acceptable Canadian accent. The bloody buggers!
SilyLavage@reddit
Ofcom considers 'bollocks' to be a moderately offensive word, as a point of interest.
f23n09fnu0w@reddit
above arsehole but under penis, apparently
Scully__@reddit
Fascinating read, thanks!
phatmikey@reddit
I thought the High Court ruled that bollocks was not offensive years ago, in the case against Virgin Records about the Sex Pistols album.
Expert-Thing7728@reddit
The idea of conducting a poll on people's thoughts on the word 'clunge' fills me with unreasonable joy. Many thanks for sharing.
Born-Car-1410@reddit
Damn and blast, I missed that poll. I'm now looking forward to finding an opportunity in the next few days (however nebulous or undeserved) to call someone an absolute clunge.

You could get away with Balls.
JoSwinsonsSlingshot@reddit
Does it apply to radio? I’ve definitely heard daytime swearing on Radio 4 on several occasions. Then again I doubt many children are tuning in
TooLittleGravitas@reddit
Yes, there is no 'watershed' on Radio 4 (not sure about the other BBC Radio channels
Queen_of_London@reddit
"Not many children tuning in" is actually one of the factors that's taken into account for TV. That probably allows more leeway in almost all Radio 4 shows.
Opening_Succotash_95@reddit
I believe on radio it's more of a case-by-case basis. Radio 4 can get away with stuff Radio 1 wouldn't.
Chungaroo22@reddit
I don’t think cunt is allowed even after 9pm. Just watched an episode of 8 out of 10 cats and they bleeped it.
stealthstu69@reddit
Cunt is allowed after 9pm but, like with anything after 9pm, it’s editing discretion
New_Pop_8911@reddit
Yeah, it was on Claudia's talk show twice last night within about 3 seconds of each other.
AmbientSheep@reddit
Yeah, it's the one word that's still generally beyond the pale. I once read that it's deemed more acceptable after 11pm, for late night films and such, but not seen that written down recently.
PeachImpressive319@reddit
You’re only allowed 1 cunt per episode though. Which is why nobody ever says it when joey Essex is on tv!
ERTCF53@reddit
That just made my day.
PegasusInTheNightSky@reddit
I remember watching a video of an uncut Mock the Week epsiode, and there's a point where they realise they've used a swear word more than the amount they're allowed to, so they just let loose knowing that part would get cut from the episode.
gr1msh33p3r@reddit
The new Mock The Week on U is definitely unshackled when it comes to content since leaving the BBC.
mJelly87@reddit
I remember Peter Capaldi saying that they had to negotiate for The Thick of It. He said something like "We'd ask if we drop three fucks, can we have another cunt?"
PegasusInTheNightSky@reddit
So the ratio is 3 fucks to a cunt? Interesting.

In Australia, they loosen the rules at 7:00 PM. Maybe kids go to bed earlier here. More likely, we just let the slightly older ones start their education sooner

Apparently we have very sweary children in Australia.

I don't know facts or stats for your comment and i have never been to Australia, but i have heard the song about the kid who swears by Kevin Bloody Wilson so I wholeheartedly agree with you 😂.
ChocUK22@reddit
I love Kevin Bloody Wilson and saw him live too
Sxn747Strangers@reddit
Swearing is common but it depends on the program.
No one would be under the illusion of what would not be said on 8 out of 10 cats, especially hosted by jimmy Carr; expect something similar if Frankie Boyle is in it for example.
Series like Strike which doesn’t just have murderers but may also have a more edgy storyline, then you can expect the F-word and I think there was even the C-word.
On Red Dwarf I don’t recall anything more than ‘smeg’, which is not a swear word, but I think they wanted something that could replace swearing but still sound as though it were.
Whereas you won’t get much, if anything, on Vera or Midsommer Murders, despite all the deaths.
emmarollo7@reddit
After 9pm most is ok to say on any channel.
Danny Dyer does genuinely talk like that.
I’ve been told by someone who went to school with him Joey Essex is thick but not that thick so presumably playing it up.
I would say we take the piss out of everyone fairly evenly.
thereidenator@reddit
I’m sure Joey Essex got all A’s in his GCSEs so not thick at all and probably an act
narnababy@reddit
Tbf I know quite a few people who got As at GCSE who are quite thick as adults (myself included 😂)
InternationalRide5@reddit
According to wikipedia, 3 GCSEs – a U in Drama, a C in Art and a D for Wood Tech.

RevStickleback@reddit

Reasonable-Key9235@reddit
Swearing is common on tv. Danny Dyer does sound like that all the time. I've met him and hes a proper funny fucker. Sean Locke came from the same part of London as Michael Caine, that's how they speak. Joey Essex is a bit put on, but he does talk like that and is a thick cunt
Loose_Acanthaceae201@reddit
Friend, you will enjoy the official guidance from our communications regulator, Ofcom.
Quick answer is that our tv often has strong language, though we have stricter laws about slurs and other hate speech, which you'll see reflected in the "how offensive" categories. There is also more nudity and sex on our tv.
By convention, we reserve strong language and adult themes for times of day when children are not expected to be watching (after 9pm, known as the "watershed", but particularly after 10pm).
The English have been making fun of the Welsh as part of their subjugation since the thirteenth century. Nowadays it's part of less serious regional banter in which we will also assert that people from Norfolk have webbed feet and people from Yorkshire are miserly. It's not exactly the height of wit, but Danny Dyer and Joey Essex are also leaning into regional stereotypes.
Money_Track6434@reddit
It is in fact, not less serious, the people of Norfolk do have webbed toes. I've seen it myself.

Joey Essex is more of an exaggeration for comic effect, but Danny Dyer is really like that. Find the episode where Danny Dyer is talking about the ghost monk if you want to piss yourself. Or was that just regular 8 out of 10 cats?
Moorhenlessrooster@reddit
As a Brit with young children, the swearing thing is interesting. As they age I'm working out what words become acceptable. Blooming and flipping, bum and willy and fanny etc ok at any age. I'm waiting to see when bloody and arse seems ok.
The us approach to not saying darn etc sounds v quaint here.
grandmasterbester@reddit
My 17 year old gamer boy - started with frick but soon went to fuck after peer ribbing. This means the whole house hears the whole smorgasbord now. The younger ones are not allowed to repeat it and complain about him . I get told off too but I’m allowed to say arse now lol. I raised them Non swearing - I’ve never heard my parents swear. I swear like a trooper when I’m on my own - it’s a skill I’ve acquired quietly over the years.
Vast_Accountant_2807@reddit
Things have certainly changed. There’s a show from the seventies called till death do us part and the abusive patriarch was to call his wife a silly cow. There were objections from the BBC and the writers changed it “silly moo”. Apparently that’s less offensive 🤷♀️
PvtRoom@reddit
your first question about swearing: it's banned before 9pm when children may be watching, then you can get X rated stuff.

We even allow the odd "cunt" after the watershed. When I was a kid we finally got cable and satellite TV when I was like 10 in the late 90's, and I was so confused how they bleeped out words like "hell" or "ass" on teen shows lol. Americans are so prudish about swear words.
CharlieMcN33l@reddit (OP)
The hypocrisy of American entertainment and broadcast standards is frustrating/disappointing/etc. for educated mature adults. The MPAA is a Christian led organization that has forced their puritanical “moral code” on entertainment for close to a century.

Also, the amount of under educated Americans has outnumbered the college educated for years. Its evidence is shown by the re-election of the asshole from The Apprentice as our president.
ignatiusjreillyXM@reddit
Re point 4 the real reason is that the English have never remotely come close to facing up to their history of oppressing and subjugating the Welsh, and (unlike the Irish) the absence of any meaningful diaspora means it generally goes unnoticed that this people, the original inhabitants of Great Britain, the original Brits, were stripped of their power, language and dignity, renamed "foreigners" (the etymology of "Welsh", whereas Wales means "land of foreigners") in their own land, and lost all powers so that essentially they were an appendage of England (a principality, not a country, and one without a recognized capital city until 1955), that power having been gained by intense military force, as the long line of very impressive castles along the border might well indicate. And then much later on industrialisation despoiled substantial parts of the country (which served to benefit not the Welsh so much as immigrant workers from Scotland, Ireland and Northern England), and then deindustrialization added to the despoilment...
I am not Welsh and have no Welsh ancestry (whereas i do have those connections with England, Scotland and Northern Ireland), but quite honestly if one people have the right to hate the English and demand reparations of them (the slave-trading states of West Africa certainly have no such legitimate claim and really need to be told to stop taking the piss), it is our western neighbours. When I was at school in England in the 80s/90s, they were the one ethnic group it was fine to mock. And I don't even know if it's true about the sheep
New_Rain_3272@reddit
Curiously, the second most important/powerful nobility title is "Marquiss" which derives from the "Marcher Lords" who were the so called boarder protectors between England and Wales. They had almost free reign in their region to wage war and rule without oversight from the King including the right to build castles, which is why there are so many there.
whatswestofwesteros@reddit
Not sheep shagging but when my friend goes back to Wales to visit her family there is almost always a rogue sheep in their garden waiting to be collected by the farmer. Cracks me up.
RevStickleback@reddit
The USA is incredibly restrictive about what is allowed on regular tv, and is something of an outlier in that regard.
There's a dataing show in the UK, for example, where contestants pick their partners based largely on the appeal of the other contestant's slowly revealed naked bodies - all uncensored.
I do recall some US celebrity on a chat show a few years ago, and they let slip a mild swear word. She looked shocked, and said "oh, can I say ____ on British TV?" and the host just looked at her like she was insane.
Carlomahone@reddit
I saw a clip of Graham Norton's show where Tom Cruise looks shocked and asks if you can say 'bitch' on British television after Graham says it. It was quite an old clip!
odinelo@reddit
Years ago, Alan Carr was interviewing Jared Leto, who accidentally said "fuck" before realising and asking is he could swear.
Carr replied "You can. You can even say Cunt"
People complained to Ofcom about it but as it aired after 10 and there was a warning for strong language before the show, they (quite rightly) did nothing about it

But woe betide an outsider from another nation taking the piss out of any of the others. We stand shoulder to shoulder against them, as a brotherhood. Curse words - pretty much every channel but only after the watershed. Up until 9pm or so it's pretty family friendly, innuendo aside, but after that the rules relax.
Danny Dyer is like that irl, but he dials it up a bit for the cameras.
I am blissfully ignorant about Joey Essex.
We make fun of the Welsh because we like them. If a Brit makes fun of you, it's because you are their mate. If we go very formal and polite, it's generally because you can't be trusted.

Danny Dyer really does talk like that. I suspect he and Ray Winston and any celebrity Cockney are hamming it up a little, but only in the sense that it's an accent that white blokes born before 1980 from the East End of London are very proud of it. They don't dilute it when talking to people outside their speech community or using different registers.

I think the 9pm swearing watershed has been answered ☺️
Danny Dyer does indeed speak like that - it’s a regional accent which, as a northerner, I had to get used to when I first saw him on tv. I think he’d be a great bloke to go for a pint with! Try watching him on last one laughing!
Joey Essex HAS to be an act in terms of his intellect but I think his accent is real. I can’t stand him personally, I don’t get why being thick would be entertaining.
Agree with people saying if you’re a mate, you’ll have the piss taken out of you, especially where there’s rivalry (rugby, football etc.) We love the Welsh, they’re amazing people with a beautiful accent (I live on the border atm and I could listen to a Welsh accent all day!). There was a great ad a few years ago of fans from the other 5 of 6 nations all shouting England and it was who everyone wanted to lose!
Worried-Penalty8744@reddit
Danny Dyer absolutely hams it up a bit. He’s nowhere near as much of a cockney wideboy when you see him talking with his wife or his daughter (also called Dani). As it happens she became “famous” because she appeared on Love Island and has managed to bag an England footballer but she does seem like a sweet person.
After 9pm is when the grown ups can come out to play on TV. Though C4 did wait until like 10pm for Naked Attraction, and Eurotrash back in the day wasn’t on until I think after 1030pm.
metal_maxine@reddit
Eurotrash was a thing of beauty - it must have dated terribly, but teenage me thought it was stupid as fuck in the best possible way.
sometimes_point@reddit
we don't have a ratings system for TV like you do, with the symbols like TV-MA for mature or whatever. It's simply 9pm and later, you can swear and kids shouldn't be watching. In America you get people complaining that little Timmy watched a programme with swearing even though it says it's mature
I'm sure those two guys play it up a bit for the camera but also yes, they're really like that.
Wales is like .... Alabama. Or Maine. Acceptable targets for gentle teasing. English people shouldn't overdo it, of course, but also they'd defend Wales to the death if you tried to do it.

Yes. To all of them, to varying degrees.
To Americans in this sub - if it's shocking to you, it's probably something we do 5 times a day. Treat that as a general rule.
mellonians@reddit
The rules aren't really as clear cut as we'd like but generally you're allowed a lot more after the 9pm watershed.
The language also has to be in context too. The best example of this is the N word. There are certain circumstances where that would be acceptable, circumstances where it would be unacceptable and other times when it would even be offensive to censor it!
OFCOM Supply a Quick Reference Guide and a more detailed report.
Warning, that contains all the very worst of language.

The definition of "curse words" is extremely subjective.
In general, certain words are not permitted before "the watershed", which is 9 pm.
But it's very, very debatable.
OK. That's not a question.

Cursing is allowed, but only after "the watershed" at 9pm.
That is how he talks, but I suspect he plays up the stereotypical eastend geezer act a little bit
Again, there is probably some truth to it, but he is mostly playing up to a stereotype. I refuse to believe anyone is that dumb. He has made a career from it so he plays up to it as much as possible.
A huge part of British culture is making fun of each other and yourself. If someone comes from a different part of the country, you will make fun of them for that. That's all there really is to it. I do wonder if you notice it more because it's a place you are vaguely familiar with, in a way that you aren't with specific towns and cities, but not familiar enough that you hear those jokes on American TV (as happens with Scotland).
I've never thought of that before, but I can definitely see what you mean.
NOTE: Please do not violate rule #4 with your answers. My previous post about Rachel Riley was removed by the mods because for your stated feelings about her. Bullying and harassment will be reported.
kalendral_42@reddit
Yes to certain extent they are but which ones you can use depend on things like whether it’s before/after the watershed, what type of programme it is, & I think some individual shows have a limit of number of swear words allowed (at least they have in the past)
As far as I’m aware Dyer & Essex are basically like that, but could be slightly exaggerated for effect
The Welsh thing is due to several hundred years of history, particularly after the English 1st annexed Wales - they were the first unification/conquest in the unification of Britain. As a result there’s still some cultural back & forth - mostly banter & playing on stereotypes- but I don’t think it is helped that despite being the oldest part of the Union they might feel they haven’t been granted the same kind of equality within the Union. For instance, Scotland & N. Ireland get proper parliaments & the right to vote on potential separation, the Welsh just have an Assembly instead of a Parliament & have to fight just to get their own language recognised, & so far no real chance of them even getting to discuss leaving the Union. But being British we don’t like to make a big in-depth political discussion about it so instead we make jokes about sheep shagging & other stereotypical banter

Just so you know, calling someone a cunt on British TV is still considered a bit shocking unless it's in a 60-90's period drama, 'cos then it's vérité.

Swear words, yes ... but after 9pm (I think)
Danny Dyer DOES speak like that ... but I'm sure he slightly exaggerates his accent a little bit; he's certainly become "more cockney" with age.
Joey Essex ... yup, that's him alright! 100%
We take the piss out of everyone ... including the Welsh!

Yes, after 9pm.
Sounds lame.
He has a slightly exaggerated media persona and is genuinely bordering on being a national treasure. He comes across as a certain type of person, but is actually a decent bloke.
Not sure, but I think he is genuinely like that and then puts it on a bit strong for laughs. Seems like a tool and luckily isn't really relevant any more.
They are an easy target and is just part of British humour to make fun of our neighbours.
I can sort of see what you mean, but to a lot of Brits they are quite different.
I'd be interested to know what an American thinks of actual Countdown? You should check it out.

1) Yes but only after 9:00 PM(?)
2) Yes it’s an act, fuck Danny Dyer.
3) I’m honestly not sure.
4) Same reason you all make fun of New Jersey.
5) … huh, never noticed that.

What a fkin fantastic thread haha. When it's normal to you, it's funny to see when it's not normal to others.
Shannoonuns@reddit
You can broadcast swears after 9pm.
Danny dyer is real.
Joey Essex is real i think but I really hope he plays it up a little bit and isn't really that thick.
Making fun of people is funny.
Sean locke doesn't remind me of Michael Caine, sorry.
MrMonkeyman79@reddit
Yes but only for shows broadcast after 9pm
I get the impression its am exaggerated version of himself and what we see is like 80% him
Talking, yes, thats just how people sound in Essex. The way he acts has to be an act otherwise I doubt he'd be able to dress himself in the morning.
British nations don't need a reason to take the piss out of each other these days, and the Welsh make it so easy. Though a thousand years of wars and infighting has lead to some healthy cultural rivalries between regions.
Ill_Temporary_9509@reddit
Joey Essex is actually that dumb
It's usually done on the show when there's someone who's actually Welsh as a guest. We call this banter
Popular-History1015@reddit
We have a thing called the “Watershed” so anything after 9pm can air with swearing. Even then some shows have and do air but with swear words bleeped out.
