For those of you who've ordered from US retailers that do not deliver to the UK - how'd you go about that?

If you're married, when did your parents meet your in-laws?

Posted by summers_tilly@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 179 comments

JC3896@reddit

Did a dinner with both sets of parents before we got engaged, was around the time we bought as house together as both sets of parents were around so we went out for a meal. Did another one after we got engaged about 6 months later. After that not again until the wedding as they live on opposite sides of the country. In laws are moving close soon though, so I imagine it'll happen once or twice a year moving forward.

Do you fill up the kettle after use?

Posted by raben-herz@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 339 comments

JC3896@reddit

To the top? No. That's gonna take too long to boil from cold later if I just want one cup. I tend to keep my kettle around 2 cups worth of water in it as I'm making hot drinks regularly and also often use it to top up water when cooking etc.

What is the worst stretch of road in the UK?

Posted by Additional-Image7938@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 322 comments

JC3896@reddit

It's by far the two stretches of road from the A417 and A436 that lead in to the air balloon roundabout. No debate for me. I'm approaching 30 and for most of my conscious memory local government has been talking about building a bypass to fix it (they started work on that finally last year set to complete in Feb 2027 and in the meantime has made traffic even worse).

I'm talking low level admin, data entry for trials and such. Those are the roles I was seeing paying the range OP provided.

JC3896@reddit

I know OP says they have a degree, but I'm wondering if the degree itself is unrelated to the job. Only jobs in pharmaceuticals paying that low a range that I can find seems to be admin roles.

Correct, but that still doesn't make it "crazy high". It's definitely higher salary but to me the bar for crazy high would start at £100k a year plus.

Be honest, how often for you and your partner argue?

A disagreement isn't an argument though? Literally not the same thing. Me and my wife are yet to have a full on argument. If we disagree on a topic we do indeed just discuss it like adults.

How does a low income person get on the property ladder nowadays?

JC3896@reddit

How is it out of touch? Pretty sure right now inheritance is easily one of the top three ways that people get a deposit together. I wouldn't have gotten on the ladder if my wife's grandmother hadn't died.

If you won £100 million, how would you distribute it amongst friends and family, if at all?

All mortgages would be paid off for family. Houses bought for siblings. I wouldn't directly tell friends but I would try set up a big group holiday every year and pay for it.

Have you ever seen anybody being detained at the airport for bringing in ridiculous stuff?

Posted by CozJeez85@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 226 comments

JC3896@reddit

No, but I did watch someone get detained once because the security agent said their clear plastic bag needed to be sealable as they'd over filled it and was just asking them to go back and get another clear bag and split the load. For whatever reason this truly enraged the passenger and they got into a giant shouting match over bloody shampoo. Eventually got detained and led away.

Speaking on teaching, I did it for a few months and hated it but my wife is a teacher, two of my closest friends are teachers, none of them find it "rewarding" as the standard of behavior in kids nowadays is truly atrocious. They do it because it's a secure and stable job, definitely not the "noble" profession it once was though.

When it comes to government admin stuff, you'll love England. Where I work has a site in Germany and one of the staff members there worked in the UK for a bit, whenever I go over she always tells me she misses being able to do things like renew a passport or get a new driver's license online and so quickly. One thing you will notice is the cost of food is higher here, you will have a fair bit less disposable income after doing things like food shop and paying energy bill. Overall though life in Germany and England really is not that dissimilar, cultural differences aside.

Many. I was part of a gaming group for around 11 years on and off, at it's peak there was about 200 active members (this was a regiment in the Napoleonic wars DLC for mount and blade warband). Some of those guys I was very close with. More recently a bunch of people from a discord server I am in came to my wedding.

I have. Police pulled in front of me on the motorway and stuck on the "do no pass" lights, then brought us all to a stop. Got out and told me and the other two front cars that they were inspecting a vehicle. Sat for a good 15 mins before they hitched it up to tow and had us follow slowly until they got to a layby.

Company I work for. Without getting too detailed they had some fairly major repair work that needed doing to the structure of a building, got quoted £35k for the work. CEO didn't like that cost so didn't sign off on it, then the Ukraine war broke out and the global price of steel shot up. The problem got worse so the structural work absolutely had to happen, re-quoted at £80k for the exact same work and had to sign off on it.

Absolutely not. The first house I grew up in had no driveway and it was the bane of my parents life, I can remember mum dragging me and both my brothers two streets over to get to the car.
