What can people do today to make the UK a better place for tomorrow?

If you have an outdoor space - any space at all, even a little patio or balcony - do something positive with it. Let a patch of your garden run wild and over a few years I promise, the seeds blown in from parks and woods will take over. Have I got nettles, dandelions, and brambles? Of course I do, but they're all amazing species. Dandelions are a great source of early nectar to support bee populations. Nettles are really important habitat and food sources for certain caterpillars. Brambles offer shelter for small birds as well as more food for many species. All three are delicious to humans also. In between the "weeds" you'll see so many varieties of beautiful grass, wildflowers, shrubs (if it's a big enough space). My garden was barren 5 years ago, then I shovelled out an area that had been full of decorative stones, maybe 5m square, and today that patch is absolutely heaving with life. Stick a trowel in the ground and you'll pull up chubby earthworms, beetles, centipedes. There are snails trundling along stems of St John's Wort, jumping spiders in the hawthorn, bees, flower flies, butterflies, ladybirds, ants. Suitable native or near-native vegetation is the fundamental support invertebrates need to generate sustainable populations which subsequently supports so many other British wildlife species. Stop covering the ground with concrete and plastics, just make a little bit of space for them.
