Are there any decent quality AR’s I can get for $1000-lower, or would it make more sense to just build my own rifle at that point?

I've never seen a BCA that worked properly. I'm sure they exist, I just haven't seen them lol. I've put together 6 from PSA though and love them to death.

Whats a budget ar platform still worth buying

Adding another PSA hat to the pile. I've got several and I've put together one for my dad and one for my brother. Theirs averaged about $750, which included a red dot, foregrip, Magpul furniture, BFG Sling, extra mags, etc.

Just put down what's on your ID. Don't like what's on your ID? Go fill out paperwork at the DMV, or just put down what's on your ID anyway and get over it. As someone with gender dysphoria myself I don't make a big deal about it to literally anyone, but especially on gov't forms. It's just more hassle that I don't need. A gun store is the last place I'd take a stand on it, people who care too much about it are shooting themselves in the foot (pun intended).

While true, it's insane to me that they've gone from $150 shitstick to $500+ just since I've been in the game, while plenty of other milsurp rifles haven't had the same jump. It's not like they're remotely rare, or even all that great. Seems to me that the new wave of milsurp collectors grew up seeing them in films and games and is willing to pay whatever price to own a garbage rod. Finnish Mosins are sweet though. Anything else is a hard pass for me personally. Sold my Tula a few years ago and haven't regretted it.

Depends on the firearm. In most places, most long guns are fine to privately ship to an FFL in the receiving state but some aren't depending on location. Handguns must always go through an FFL. But if something goes wrong with the sale and the gun needs to be returned to the owner, the FFL will only send it back to a nearby FFL. Which won't if you're selling a gun no longer legal in your state. Unconstitutional bullshit like this just makes it a nightmare for law abiding citizens. Not one single criminal even remotely cares, and will carry on as normal.

We used [this furnace](https://a.co/d/01PwAbsn) which isn't terribly priced, especially since it comes with all the kit you need to melt and pour. I used a larger and deeper graphite casting mold than the one it comes with, which you'll need since you lose a lot of thickness grinding the I surfaces flat. Don't forget a long handled steel spoon for skimming the top! I accidentally used an aluminum one by accident once and it melted instantly lol.

Well my got a smelting furnace on Amazon, which I recommend since it makes everything much easier, but there are plenty of YouTube videos of home built forges/furnaces out there as well! It takes a significant amount of heat for quite some time. A cheap propane furnace will make the whole thing much easier. You could try getting just the hose attachment separately and making your own furnace out of fire bricks.

Belgian proof mark on the barrel, and that's definitely a Mauser action. I can't tell if it was a full rifle that was sporterized to high heaven or just built as a Frankengun from a reliever.

Nearly anything you take off or put on a gun can affect the zero, particularly on the barrel. It may not be far off, but take a few shots to confirm/adjust zero.

Thanks! My method is to make a rough prototype to prove the concept first, then make a prettier one on the second go around. I should do a family photo of my homemade guns to demonstrate lol. This one took so long to make that I was just too tired to worry about cosmetics at all. The next one will have more care put into the final appearance, since I have the process worked out!

Best pistol under $2k?

Posted by Gunzo_Chelo@reddit | Firearms | View on Reddit | 19 comments

Highlander_16@reddit

Really depends on what job you have for it. Self protection, recreation, target competition, dynamic pistol matches, etc. Some higher end guns are really suited to competition, but I wouldn't recommend them for carrying in the woods, you know? But generally I'd recommend not using the full budget on the gun. I'd advise $1200-1500 on the pistol, then the rest on accessories and ammo, regardless of your intended use for the firearm.

For real, it'll be neat to own one of his guns but I'm not going into debt to do so. Even though he had some sick pieces I'd love to have, my budget is a few hundred, not thousands lol.

brown bear gun

Highlander_16@reddit

Makes sense! Yeah I'd definitely recommend a 10mm with hard-cast lead bullets like[this](https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=219). Keep in mind they have a lot more recoil and are harder on the gun than range ammo. Definitely keep the bear spray in your kit too though!

Highlander_16@reddit

The overall length and barrel length restrictions pretty much mean a handgun is the only legit option. You would be hard pressed to justify defense against a bear at 100m anyway, and a tiny AR or the like wouldn't perform well at that distance anyway. Where do you live where brown bear encounters are a concern and you've got such restrictions? I'd suggest a semi-auto 10mm handgun for last ditch defense, but would still default to bear spray as a first choice. A wounded bear is more dangerous than one that's just got a big whiff of the good stuff. Also they often bluff charge, which could turn into a real attack when it otherwise wouldn't be if you shoot them rather than spray them.

AITA for denying these sales?

Posted by Big_Shoe_3067@reddit | Firearms | View on Reddit | 148 comments

Highlander_16@reddit

Man, I worked in two different gun stores where I could deny a sale if I didn't like how someone smelled. Slight exaggeration but the way I saw it, I was in no way obligated to sell a lethal weapon to someone I got a bad from. Don't like it? Go somewhere else. My bosses agreed. I did deny a few people but never without cause, though some were less on the nose than your examples. Each time I explained my reasoning and each time my bosses agreed and even thanked me. They knew I'm passionate about arming every law abiding citizen possible, so for me to deny a sale there had to be pretty significant reason. I couldn't imagine getting a write up for denying a sale.

There’s a “combat zero” or whatever you wanna call it for the AR. Supposed to be like 30 meters or something like that. Is zeroing an AR up close like that still relevant or is it outdated?

You can very easily load .38 SPL / .357 Mag out in the woods with a simple Lee Loader... yeah you could do other calibers too, but straight wall rimmed cartridges are the easiest. It's so fun loading and firing your own cartridges out in the woods!

Thoughts on home defense pistol for single woman getting back into shooting after a long hiatus

Highlander_16@reddit

Lots of folks have good suggestions here, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway. Or an essay lol. I'd trade in the Ruger against a Glock 48 or 43X, both great for personal protection inside the home as well as if you decide to carry concealed in the future. They're slim enough that they're easy to conceal, yet large enough that they handle quite similar to a full sized pistol. Think a Glock 19 on a diet, just a bit slimmer while nearly identical in other dimensions. I've got large hands and still find them more comfortable than the 19, but that's personal preference. I've got night sights and aftermarket 15rd mags (from Shield Arms) for my G48 and they work great, but others have reported malfunctions, so be aware of that. I did have to install a metal magazine release but that was like $15 and very easy to do at home. There are other 15rd mags on the market that are polymer and don't require a mag release change but I haven't used them and can't speak to their quality. Or just stick with factory 10rd mags. The likelihood that 15rds will save your life where 10 did not is extraordinarily slim, particularly in a home defense scenario, and spare mags are good to have anyway if there's a magazine malfunction of some kind. You can get either one with factory night sights, but they will cost a bit more. Still less than buying the sights separately and having them installed though. There are more budget minded options out there but for me, my life is the one thing I don't want to risk by cheaping out, and Glocks aren't exactly the most expensive anyway. Plus even if you get mediocre trade in value for the Ruger would help cut that cost down. On top of all that, buy ammo and train, train, train. Particularly for personal protection, going to the range once or twice a year is not sufficient. Handguns can be very valuable tools but require a lot of training to handle well even on a good day, and when you add the stress of a life-or-death situation it's even harder. Take a concealed carry course even if it isn't required by your state, and even if you don't plan to carry outside the home. You'll learn a lot about the laws regarding self defense which is invaluable.

Which .38 Special cartridge would be better for self defense?
