M249 questions

so can't find a solid answer for the moa at 100 yards for the m249. I'm seeing 4 moa which seems unlikely and also 12 moa both at 100 yards.
Also if anyone here has ever shot a automatic version how hard would it be to get a 3 round burst on the head at 100 yards?

M249 Technical Accuracy: - 4 MOA is the mechanical accuracy from a fixed mount/test fixture with match ammunition - 12 MOA is the practical field accuracy standard that includes human factors, bipod wobble, and combat conditions - The Army's acceptance standard is 4.5 MOA maximum from a machine rest
Real-World Performance: The 4 MOA figure comes from depot testing with the weapon clamped in a fixture. In actual use, you're looking at 6-8 MOA with a good shooter on bipod, closer to 10-12 MOA in field conditions. The long, thin barrel heats up quickly and accuracy degrades significantly after sustained fire.
3-Round Burst Control at 100 Yards: This is where physics gets brutal. The M249's cyclic rate is 750-1000 RPM, so your 3-round burst happens in roughly 0.18-0.24 seconds. Even with the bipod deployed and proper body position:

Depends on the situation and the maintenance history of the weapon. A 249 on a mount or with a very well set up position and a practiced shooter could probably get 3 head hits (only 1 or 2 would be A-zone hits though)
5.56 recoil isn’t that terrible, and the practiced shooter would be the biggest part of the equation.
Now a 240 or 50 would have to be a tripod or vehicle mount, the recoil is too substantial to be mitigated

Three in a head at 100 meters is something I wish I would have tried at the range. I'm sure I could do it, repeatably. Not a nice tight group, but in a six inch circle is not very difficult.
I really don't get why people keep parrotig the, "it's an area weapon," thing. It is not just a spray an pray weapon, and if you used it as such, then you and your NCOs fucked up. You for doing it and not learning the weapon, and your team leader or squad leader for not knowing better and teaching you the proper use.

29d account age, this is your only post?
I diagnose you with Federal Agent (terminal)
For real though, it's a machine gun, an area weapon. 'MOA' is not a concern, and 3 in the head at 100yds is possible but very unlikely.

Question is about pat tillman and Pete blaber recent comments on it.

I think that was a 240 or 50, rather than a 249

It’s an area weapon, not a precision rifle. Doesn’t help that the place to put a scope is the cover plate. Three round burst on the head is possible but unlikely IMHO.

Almost nothing at full auto is going to pull off that shot. And if you don’t count auto cannons, then it’s basically nothing.
But the full silhouette is doable from a bipod. And that’s with barely trained troops, it’s the beauty of 556.

Eh, I could consistently have 4 and 5 round bursts hit a idpa silhouette at 300-350 yards on a m240, with a tripod, buffered cradle and sandbags. So the platform is definitely capable of it with the right setup.

3 rounds in the head from a burst of 9-12 rounds, maybe sure . Who’s shooting 3 rounds from an mg tho?

Have you fired a machine gun before? Do you have experience with full auto? If not, you’re probably not going to be able to pull it off. I have years of experience with the 249 and 240 among other MGs, it’s not hard when you’ve been carrying them around forever, but for you just curious and maybe going to try it some day, probably not going to be so easy.

I competed in M60 machine gun competitions in Europe in the seventies and eighties. We would do very well by learning the trigger and using single shots. It's an area weapon but we're being judged by hits on silhouettes. Single shot allowed more precision

3 round burst? Damn near impossible to control the recoil.
Could you do 3 quick single fire rounds? Yup. Most people who “qualify” as expect on the 240/249 don’t actually do it in controlled bursts, they do quick succession single fire to actually hit the targets and score expert.
Machine guns are supposed to go BRRRRT and keep people’s heads down so infantry can maneuver into a more advantageous position.
