Do you think drinking alcohol should/will go the same route as smoking has?

Posted by woolyweasel@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 88 comments

Grim_Farts_Barnsley@reddit

Maybe but it won't go without a fight. You'll know it's started when big brewery multinationals start hiring PR companies and law firms to start lying about the negative effects of alcohol, just like the Phillip Morris group did when studies showed smoking causes cancer. Alcohol is ingrained more deeply into our culture than tobacco ever was though, so I doubt it'll ever go completely

Why does the north east of England not produce elite quality footballers like they used to?

>It's really stark. It's money. More population and catchment area tbh. London has 16 professional clubs because there's that many people around to support them. The only other area even close to that densely packed is Lancashire/Greater Manchester and even then they have the likes of Salford who only exist because ex-Man U players are bankrolling them and only have a crowd when the big Manchester clubs are playing away that weekend. Then there's also Blackburn who play in a half-empty stadium every week because Blackburn is sandwiched in the middle of Preston, Burnley and Bolton which all also have professional clubs so there's nowhere for their catchment area to expand into.

It's been a fair while since I've been to Donny in fairness but I remember it bein rough as a bear's arse. Barnsley is fine. I'm a Sheffield Utd season ticket holder but I've been to Oakwell a few times recently since it's ten minutes down't road from me, it's a good laugh honestly. Guessing from the distances you live somewhere like Mexborough or Brampton or sommat? They both have non-league teams but you'll be looking at the counties leagues. Proper local clubs, expect a hundred-odd fans if that, but in my experience with that kinda club everyone's dead nice and you can have a proper pint watching the game.

Grim_Farts_Barnsley@reddit

It really depends on where I'm working that day and how far it is from home. I do a lot of contracting for property developers and I usually end up on a random new build estate anywhere across south or west Yorkshire. But rule of thumb I'll be up at half six or 7, up and dressed, downstairs and stick the kettle on so I can have a cuppa ready for when her ladyship comes down. Take the dog for a wander round the block before work. He's a giant lump of mastiff and doesn't need a huge marathon every day so this is fine. I take him for a longer bimble up at the park/woods in't evening anyway. Then off to work.

Any targeted ad you see on tinternet is a scam 99.87% of the time. If you have low testosterone that's sommat you need to get checked by your doctor. A random product you found online won't do nowt but cost you money.

People, who were alive when the Hillsborough? What’s the reaction when it happened?

Posted by LazyFun825@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 21 comments

Grim_Farts_Barnsley@reddit

I were a teenager living in Sheffield when it happened. The initial reaction across the city was shock and horror that something like that had happened. Then South Yorkshire Police started blaming the Liverpool fans for causing the crush. Everyone who'd ever been to a football match policed by SYP knew what a bunch of useless twats they were so that were never going to fly. Took long enough but I'm glad the victims finally got some kind of justice.

\- The owner is a knob \- The toilets are always in their own pocket dimension that you need to go down a scary corridor to get to \- The food is basic and everything on the menu that isn't the grilled meat is reheated in a microwave \- The drink is cheaper than most pubs I wouldn't take someone on a date there if you want a second date, depending on location you might be able to sit and read a book. Most of them are alright during the day but the cheap drink brings out all the most bellendy bellends you can imagine as soon as the sun goes down. It's an OK food/drink option and the value for money is decent but I wouldn't go in expecting a gourmet experience.

Why do so many Brits hate their hometowns (and even the UK as a whole)?

Posted by SuitableSympathy2614@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1005 comments

Grim_Farts_Barnsley@reddit

Depends what you mean by hometown. I were born and raised in Sheffield, Sheffield is lovely. But me and the misses moved to Barnsley when we got married, mainly because we couldn't afford to buy a house in Sheffield at the time. That were over 30 years ago, Barnsley has had the same decline as most British towns since then. The town centre is grim now and the rough parts that existed before have spread and got even rougher. My kids have grown up and moved back to Sheffield, me and the wife want to do the same just as soon as we can afford it.

Proving food for elderly parents over Christmas is zero participation normal ?

Posted by Cute_Ad_9730@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 19 comments

Grim_Farts_Barnsley@reddit

Pretty normal. My in-laws are in their late 70s, still living independently but obviously long retired so they're on a fixed income and food isn't getting any cheaper so we help them out where we can. We had them round for Christmas day and Boxing day and sent them off with a big food package of leftovers. It's part of being a social species mate. Parents look after kids when they're too young and helpless to work, kids look after their elderly relatives when they're too old to work. No need to be tight about it.

How do I respond and counter my boomer family who say it was just as difficult to buy a house when they did, as it is today?

Posted by Tasty-Explanation503@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 703 comments

Grim_Farts_Barnsley@reddit

Not sure this is true. I'm a GenXer, my Dad was a boomer and my kids are late Millennials. My dad was able to buy a house in a nice bit of Sheffield on a railwayman's salary in the early 70s. My mum didn't work when we were little. Couple of decades later I had to move to a cheaper area and me and my wife still wouldn't have been able to get a mortgage without both us working even though we both individually earned more than my dad had been when he got his mortgage. When it was my kids' turn them and their spouses were both working and they still needed to come to the bank of mum & dad to help out with mortgage deposits just to make it remotely workable. Every generation born since the war it's got progressively worse.

Was it a letter or a parcel? RM's owners couldn't give a toss about the letters part of the business. It makes a loss. They wanted the parcel end of things because that's profitable but the government wouldn't let them only take part of RM's original functionality. So I'm guessing they've got significantly more people working in the parcels department and nowhere near enough in the letter sorting room or whatever.

Similar here but I moved from Sheff to Barnsley instead. I wouldn't have wanted to live in Rotherham even in the 90s. I refuse to take jobs in Donny any more after a couple of times the native smackheads tried to rob me at knifepoint.

Not in the 35+ bracket but I've been married to my wife for 31 years. The only thing she routinely does that annoys me is leaving the door to my workshop unlocked. I have a room with all my tools, a workbench and various bits and bobs in it. I keep it locked because I don't want the grandkids getting in and mucking about with anything they could hurt themselves with. But it's also the only indoor space we could find for the big chest freezer so she needs to be able to get in there. This'd be fine if she'd lock the door behind herself when she was done.
