Low speed e bikes can use bike lanes, high speed e mopeds use roads and can only be ridden by 16+ riders. Seems pretty standard to me. Didn't see anything about insurance or registration or plating reqs

I installed a better 11t-32t freewheel on the Costco bike and the tires stay at 60 PSI. I'm thinking maybe the wheel bearings are bad because when I took the rear wheel off to change the freewheel, the wheel bearing wouldn't really spin smoothly from being twisted by hand

I really don't understand. I have a crappy Costco bike at home that I've been dailying for a month or two. It's heavy for an analogue bike, but not that heavy. I went and rented a $1,600 e-bike, a Giant Roam E + with a huge battery, motor, controller, etc. I decided for shits and giggles to turn off the electric motor entirely and go for a ride around some outdoor trails in the cascade mountain range. I was expecting it to be exactly like what you said, to the point of being torturous to try and pedal that thing around without any electronic assistance What I did NOT expect was that it somehow felt smoother and easier to pedal that thing than my analogue bike back home. Sometimes I had to double check that the electric assist was off because it really felt like it was giving me a little boost (it was off). When I got back home and jumped back on my cruddy bike, it felt harder to ride and gain momentum then the heavy e bike with the engine off  Are my wheel bearings so absolutely shitty? What in the world is going on

I agree with you to an extent. I think it's our biological condition that makes us pre-disposed to justifying the insane amounts of pain we go through with the brief islands of bliss. I recognize that within myself. I can go through so much suffering and relativize it all away if I can feel the occasional treat, which could be as minor as just eating food or being able to sleep in a bed (been there) All living things have this to an extent, being alive = stressing and fighting against something to keep living. So it has to be baked into DNA to literally keep fighting and not just give up. Otherwise plants would stop photosynthesizing sunlight, trees would stop growing, zebras would stop running away from predators or stop walking hundreds of miles across the savanna, etc But I think that objectively, without that biological condition that ensures our survival as a species, people WOULD check out, especially if there was a simple way to just snap your fingers and do so. The other reality is that checking out involves inflicting huge amounts of scary, scary pain and trauma on yourself in a violent act. That will make most people think "errrrr ok I'd rather just keep living and going through what I already know". If you had a button you could press which would simply gently end consciousness without being destructive to your meat body, then reality would be way different
